docker info reports DockerRootDir as the DAEMON sees it, and
host_storage_constrained fed that string straight into shutil.disk_usage,
which statvfs()es it in the CALLING process's mount namespace. The two
coincide only when the caller is the daemon's host. In the nested act
container of the workspace jobs they do not, so os.statvfs('/var/lib/docker')
raised FileNotFoundError, matrix.py died, and because 00_one.sh invokes it
bare under set -euo pipefail the whole swarm drill went down with it. All
five workspace jobs of run 30560683608 failed this way, byte-identically,
across five base images and five nested distros.
docker_root_free_bytes() now takes the vantage point as a required keyword:
it measures the daemon's data root when that path resolves here, and the
caller's stated local path when it does not. matrix.py passes "/", which is
the same vantage it already trusts for its ENOSPC abort 270 lines earlier;
overlayfs passes statfs through to the upper filesystem, so a container of a
daemon measures that daemon's data-root filesystem through its own rootfs.
Nothing is caught and nothing is guessed. An unreachable daemon still raises
RuntimeError out of docker_data_root(), which is the guard this module exists
for, and local_vantage carries no default because only the caller knows where
it is running.
The compose-side twin loses its || true and its hardcoded /var/lib/docker
substitution, so an unresolvable root no longer measures a guessed filesystem.
Its compose.exec locality was already correct and is unchanged.
Verified against the pre-fix module under the CI condition: with the data root
stubbed to a path absent from this namespace, the old code raises
FileNotFoundError and the new code measures the local vantage; with the daemon
stubbed unreachable, the new code still raises RuntimeError.

docker info reports the daemon's data root. Under act only the socket is
mounted, so that path is not in the runner's mount namespace and every
swarm run died at the STORAGE_CONSTRAINED lookup with FileNotFoundError.
The container's own writable layer lives under that data root, so its
root filesystem carries the same free space.

The min_storage gate measures every declared pin on each run, and every measurement was an anonymous manifest request to Docker Hub, which meters those per IP. A full run exhausted the pull budget, so the following local deploy could no longer pull at all and the gate itself stopped measuring: 96 of 165 images answered indeterminately and only warned.
Read the GHCR mirror first and fall back to the upstream registry only for images it does not carry. The copy is byte-identical, so the measured size is unchanged. Persist measured sizes under the temporary directory; store positive results only, because a cached indeterminate answer would be remembered as fact and the gate would stop measuring for good.
Lift the mirror path formula out of the provider into utils so the writer and the reader share one definition, resolving the namespace from GITHUB_REPOSITORY, then remote.pushDefault, then origin. pushDefault has to win: origin may point at an upstream that hosts no mirror. Parse .git/config by hand because configparser rejects the duplicate keys git writes and the test container ships no git binary.
Measured over all 165 declared pins: no requests to Docker Hub, 277 to the mirror, 9 to registries it does not carry, and 164 of 165 images measured.
Leave manifest_exists on the upstream registry. It answers whether the declared pin is still pullable from where the deploy pulls it, which a mirrored copy cannot attest; it takes the cache only.

Three conflicts, none resolved by picking a side wholesale:
- Makefile: took the incoming ACT_INPUTS, which routes through SWARM_DISTROS
instead of inlining the same expression a second time.
- test-e2e-playwright/02_run_one.yml: took the incoming rc handling. An absent
rc now counts as failure; the previous default(0) let an aborted Playwright
run pass silently, contradicting the debug message right above it.
- web-app-peertube spec: combined both. Kept gotoOnion and resolveTimeout,
which this branch's lint enforces, and adopted the incoming retry-inside-poll
for the OIDC button plus its networkidle wait.
An over-declared min_storage makes a host look too small: it feeds the storage guard, the runner packer and the sufficient-storage filter, so a deploy that would have fit prunes a cache it did not need to lose. Nothing checked the declared number against reality.
The new external test measures what a pull of the service's own image:version actually transfers - config blob plus every layer blob, resolved for linux/amd64 - and fails when min_storage exceeds it by more than 1GB. A service whose data volume genuinely dominates keeps its value by carrying '# nocheck: min-storage-headroom' together with a 'Reason:', the same two-marker shape meta/volumes.yml already uses for nfs: false.
Sizes come from the repo's own registry client rather than 'docker buildx imagetools': make test-external runs inside the compose container, which has no docker socket. manifest_transfer_size reuses the existing bearer-challenge flow, keeps the tri-state contract of manifest_exists (an indeterminate registry warns instead of failing), and resolves a multi-platform index to its amd64 manifest - the case a raw jq over '.layers' would miss entirely. Distinct image refs are measured concurrently through resolve_max_fetch_workers().
A min_storage that parses out of the YAML but cannot be located in the file text fails the test, so a declaration can never silently lose its marker resolution.

The flag was decided by a fixed free-space threshold (100 GiB by default), which fired on roomy hosts and stayed silent on a 145 GiB CI runner that a single deploy round could fill. It now compares free space on Docker's data root against what the deploy declares it needs: the summed min_storage of the selected applications and their transitive dependencies.
The need is variant-aware. utils/storage/constrained.py overlays each app's meta/variants.yml entry before walking the service registry, so a round that trims services down is measured at its own size instead of the base configuration's.
Both entry paths pass their per-round variant map: cli/administration/deploy/development/init.py decides inside the round loop (compose and host share this via ci/one.sh -> dedicated.sh), and utils/tests/swarm/matrix.py feeds the decision into the swarm host_vars payload. --threshold-gib is gone; --force-storage-constrained still overrides.

The workspace workflow asked the distro SPOT two questions through embedded python one-liners: the matrix image list, and the distro behind a matrix entry. Give both a name -- distro_of_dev_runtime_image() as the counterpart to dev_runtime_image(), and a cli.meta.ci.dev_runtime module shaped like its image_ref neighbour. The empty-SPOT guard that protected the matrix from silently skipping every job moves along with it. No caller yet; the workflow switches over in the next commit.

The merge across every meta/users.yml compared a field as a whole. For tokens that field is a mapping whose keys are per-app entries, so two roles registering a token for the same user hit the conflict check even though the entries never overlapped: the first role to declare it won and the second aborted the deploy. sys-token-store is the sanctioned way to persist a runtime secret per app on a user, which made it usable by exactly one role.
Dict-valued fields now merge key by key. A real collision, the same sub-key with two different values, still raises, and the message names field.sub_key so a token store holding a dozen apps says which one collided.
Tests cover both paths: two roles registering distinct token keys for one user, and the same key with conflicting values.

The serial distro loop (shuffle, time budget, fast-fail skip, exit on the first failing distro) lived inline in scripts/tests/deploy/ci/all.sh and was therefore reachable only from the compose and host deploys. Swarm and guide have to iterate distros with the same semantics, so the loop moves into scripts/tests/deploy/distros.sh and takes the per-distro command as "$@".
ci/all.sh keeps the app-level preamble and execs the loop with the new ci/one.sh, which resolves the CI image and dispatches to the per-app override or dedicated.sh.
Image resolution leaves the loop as well: scripts/meta/resolve/image/ci.sh renders the reference through cli.meta.ci.image_ref instead of respelling ghcr.io/... locally, which meta/distros.yml declares as the single source.
The two CI time knobs are declared in default.env instead of being repeated as literals, so no caller has to invent a budget.
Three paths are dropped as dead: the empty budget that disabled the limit, the failed counter that could only ever print 0, and the branch for an unset deadline.
Both new scripts are pinned by contract tests. Those tests clear BASH_ENV because the test container exports it as the env loader, which would otherwise re-inject every stripped key and make the assertions pass for the wrong reason.

The env generator runs on the bare bootstrap python, before any
dependency is installed. utils/distros.py reached PyYAML through
utils.cache.yaml, so `python -m cli.meta.env` died with
ModuleNotFoundError on every dev-runtime image that ships python3
without PyYAML.
utils/yaml_bootstrap.load_block reads the block-YAML subset the SPOT
files use with stdlib only. It raises BootstrapYamlError on anything it
cannot parse identically to yaml.safe_load, so meta/distros.yml fails
loud instead of drifting.
The per-line regex lint meant to guard this is gone: one hop of
indirection defeated it and it stayed green while the invariant was
broken. It is replaced by a test that runs the real generator with
every non-stdlib import blocked.

Parallel checkouts collided on the compose subnet, host ports and container
names, so a quality run in a worktree died at compose-up. Slot each checkout
via custom.env and layer two overrides on top: the shared cache network in
place of a second cache stack, and the shared .git directory without which
git aborts inside the container.
Both overlays gate on the resource they need, not on the slot number, so a
stray INFINITO_INSTANCE cannot make compose demand a value nobody set.

categories.yml moves from roles/ to the repository-root meta/, joining packages.yml. utils/roles/categories.py owns its location plus the tree-walking helpers that were stranded in entity/name.py, so no caller spells the path or duplicates the lookup.
meta/distros.yml becomes the SPOT for every distribution: os_family, Galaxy platform name, dev-environment base image, and the pkgmgr/pkgmgr-virgin/environment reference templates. It replaces seven scattered copies (DISTRO_FAMILY, VALID_DISTROS, _DISTROS, _CANONICAL_PLATFORMS, two shell arrays, a Makefile literal). INFINITO_DISTROS is no longer a static default but generated by utils/env/handlers/infinito/distros.py; the shell consumers read it through the env layer.
Drops dead CLI surface found along the way: --categories-file and --roles-dir on the provision CLI plus three unused parameters of generate_dynamic_inventory, and the positional roles_file of the invokable categories command.
tests/lint/repository/test_distros_spot.py pins the copies that cannot call the SPOT (workflow literals, docs table) and forbids composing a pkgmgr reference outside it.

moby/buildkit was hardcoded in four places across two workflows and catthehacker/ubuntu in two act scripts, none of them reachable by the image mirror: utils/docker/image/discovery.py only scans roles/**/meta/services.yml. So the one image the CI build cannot proceed without was pulled straight from Docker Hub, unmirrored, which is what broke the fedora build in run 30160077828.
Declare both as mirror-only services on svc-runner, following the test-e2e-playwright precedent, so the existing mirror pipeline picks them up unchanged. New scripts/meta/resolve/image/service_ref.sh reads image+version back out of the declaration and is the single source for consumers outside Ansible; its mode argument is mandatory (upstream never touches the network, mirror prefers the GHCR tag and falls back to upstream). The fallback is why the mirror job can keep running in parallel with the build instead of gating it.
ACT_PLATFORM_IMAGE moves to an env handler so act consumers read the declared value via BASH_ENV, and workflow.sh now demands it instead of defaulting to a literal. Operator overrides still win through eb.setdefault.
Verified: service_ref.sh in all four paths (upstream, mirror hit, missing mode, invalid mode); the mirror path matches GHCRProvider.image_base() character for character and resolves against the live registry anonymously; ACT_PLATFORM_IMAGE resolves through the real BASH_ENV mechanism; make quality green on all four targets.

A role states which package it needs; the registry owns every distribution
mapping and every acquisition path. Declarations live in the repository-root
meta/packages.yml when more than one consumer installs them, and in a role's
own meta/packages.yml otherwise.
schema.py owns the declaration shape, registry.py finds and indexes the
declarations, plan.py turns a resolved spec into ordered module calls, and the
package_install action plugin only executes them. Keeping the plan pure makes
every acquisition path unit-testable without an Ansible connection:
distribution repositories, the AUR with its unprivileged build user, COPR, PPA,
an EPEL bootstrap package, the pacman multilib section and source builds.
The data is guarded by lints: a package id and a concrete distribution package
name each belong to exactly one declaration, a role installs only its own or
shared ids, every id resolves for all five default distributions with an
empty mapping justified by a nocheck, declarations read in ascending order,
every plan builds and names only whitelisted modules, and an external test
queries the real package indexes of all five distributions.
This commit adds the mechanism and the shared collection; no consumer uses it
yet.

Dedicating a single worker to the sandbox left the drain step with nowhere to
put the agent: draining the only labelled node failed with `no suitable node
(scheduling ...)`. Two labelled workers are also what the requirement asks for,
so the earlier single-worker choice traded one defect for another.
The cost is deliberate: the inverse placement constraint pushes every
non-sandbox service off both workers, so the stack host carries the rest of the
platform. That is the topology the requirement describes, and whether the stack
host holds up under it is what the next swarm run measures.

The inventory groups and the remote-2-local provider list are the same fact about which node holds a backup repository. extend_inventory now consumes backup_repos.repo_placements instead of restating the closure checks, so the two cannot drift apart again.

The drill configured svc-bkp-remote-2-local with a fixed manager plus NFS provider list for every app, while the manager only runs a backup repository when the app's include closure pulls svc-bkp-volume-2-local or svc-bkp-secrets-2-local in. For an app whose container_backup consumer is statically off, such as svc-dns-unbound, user-backup never ran on the manager, so the pull was rejected with 'Permission denied (publickey, password)' and the fail-if-any wrapper took the whole unit down at drill step 4/9. Four roles reach that step today: svc-dns-unbound, svc-db-redis, svc-registry-cache and svc-registry-docker.
backup_repos.py expresses the placement once and matrix derives the provider list from it per round. derive_includes accepts the round's variant map because INFINITO_APP_VARIANTS only reaches the subprocess callers. The extras file keeps the device paths the drill reads back and loses the provider list nothing read from it, and the drill banners stop claiming backup legs that were never installed.

A sandbox node runs gVisor as its daemon-wide default runtime and every
container scheduled there inherits it, so keycloak failed to start on one.
Swarm has no taints, which leaves the inverse placement constraint as the only
lever: sandbox consumers are pinned to the labelled nodes, everything else is
kept off them. Both halves were measured on a live cluster first, because a
docker constraint has no presence test and rejects an empty comparison value:
`!= true` does match a node without the label, and three replicas under it
avoided two labelled workers entirely.
That makes the set of labelled nodes load-bearing for the whole platform, and
it was decided by accident. Without an `svc-virt-kata` inventory group the
service loader runs the role on every host, so every worker becomes a sandbox
node and the rest of the platform is evacuated onto the stack host. The role
now refuses to run in swarm mode until the operator names those nodes.
With the group present the opposite gap opened: the provisioner puts every role
group on the single `--host` it is given, so the role lands on the manager
alone, the label task skips itself there, and no node ends up labelled. The old
assert only proved that a worker exists, which says nothing about where the
role ran, so the deploy passed the check and then hung until the convergence
wait gave up. The assert now reads the labels back from the stack host.
`docker node ls --filter label=` matches engine labels, not swarm node labels;
the filter has to be `node.label`.
The constraint itself is emitted only where a sandbox tier exists, so a deploy
without an agent role is untouched by any of this, and the lab dedicates a
single worker: labelling both would leave the manager as the only home for
every other service.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
`docker stack deploy` drops the per-service `runtime:` key, so a swarm worker
can only carry the sandbox as its daemon-wide `default-runtime`. That was never
set: the role reached the manager only, no node was labelled, and one of three
agent replicas executed model-generated code under plain runc.
Setting it from the base render is not possible either. The container role
writes `daemon.json` before the runtime binary exists, and dockerd refuses to
start when a runtime path does not resolve ("stat /usr/local/bin/runsc: no such
file or directory"). The role's own attempt to re-render afterwards was a silent
no-op, because `include_role: sys-svc-container` hits the
`run_once_sys_svc_container` guard.
Move the probes plus the render into `daemon_config.yml` and let the role
re-enter it via `tasks_from` after installing runsc. Only runtimes whose binary
the probe found are registered, and `default-runtime` is written only for a
present shim on a non-stack host, so the stack host keeps the shared kernel for
the platform's own services.
The placement constraint compares against a fixed literal because Docker
constraints have no presence test: label the node `kata-capable=true` rather
than with the runtime name, otherwise a Kata node fails a `== runsc`
comparison. Without a worker outside the stack host no node is eligible at all,
so refuse the deploy instead of leaving the service pending forever.
`select_runtime.yml` is gone: hermes and openclaw included it by absolute path
out of a foreign role, and one probe in the container role now serves every
consumer.
Verified live on a three node cluster: worker `DefaultRuntime=runsc`, both
workers labelled, manager unlabelled, service constrained, and the running
replica reports `runtime=runsc`.

A person credited with a link in one place and a bare name in another
reads as two different people and drops the reader's path to them.
sys-svc-engine showed it in two adjacent lines: the same name once bare,
once linked.
The new credits-attribution lint requires a name linked in any Credits
section to carry that link everywhere, and rejects one name pointing at
two URLs. It found 13 offenders, including a second contributor whose
attribution had drifted in test-e2e-cli.
The generator produced the defect on every run: its context carried
application_author but never application_author_url, so the template
always took the unlinked branch. Existing READMEs kept their correct
Credits because the generator only fills missing sections, which is why
239 roles were right and 12 wrong.
The name to URL map is derived rather than declared: galaxy_info.company
names the project owner, not the role author (web-app-mattermost is
authored by Alejandro Roman Ibanez but lists Kevin Veen-Birkenbach as
company), so only the Credits lines themselves carry the mapping.
Generator and lint share that derivation and cannot drift apart, and a
new contributor needs one linked credit rather than a code change.

A role with a Model Context Protocol surface declares one mcp: entry in
meta/services.yml. The vocabulary module owns every allowed value, a hard
lint validates each declaration, and roles_with_service gains an opt-in
direction= kwarg so a client role resolves its servers at deploy time.
The lookup stays backwards compatible: without direction= the entries
keep their original four keys, so the existing dashboard, prometheus and
matomo callers are untouched. With it, each entry additionally carries
transport, auth, auth_subject and an endpoint dict whose port is
resolved from the referenced service's ports.local or ports.internal.
The lint rejects Jinja on MCP-specific fields (only enabled/shared may
carry it) because the static resolver cannot evaluate a templated block,
and it verifies that endpoint.service_key names a service in the same
file whose ports.* actually contain endpoint.port_key.

The cold-render warmup budget was 120s; after the rescan memoization the cold render dropped ~5x, making 120s far too loose to catch a caching regression. Halve it to 60s (validated under make quality's xdist load, where the render lands ~25s). Wire application_gid's functools.cache into applications._reset() so every perf-test setUp measures a genuinely cold render -- without it a warm GID cache from a prior test would let a warm-up pass 60s that a true cold render on a slower runner would miss, and the cache-ratio assertions could go order-dependent.

Five helpers rescanned the whole roles/ tree on every call while their result is a pure function of the (static) tree, so callers that invoke them per-role/per-app/per-service turned the scan into O(N^2) filesystem ops. compute_application_gid was the measured hotspot: 254 rescans in one applications render (~25s of a 41s cold render). Memoize each tree-derived result with functools.cache keyed by the resolved roles_dir (the repo's existing idiom), returning tuples so the shared cache cannot be mutated; dependency_resolver uses an instance cache instead since functools.cache on a method would pin instances via self. Cold applications/domains render drops 41s -> ~8.5s (5.6x); behaviour is unchanged (GID/registry/placement/path values identical).
