3529 invalid comments in 528 files, grandfathered in while the linter only saw the working-tree diff. Removal ran through the linter's own collectors, so detection and deletion cannot drift: a comment whose opener line is blank before it and whose closer line is blank after it loses all its lines, anything else loses only the comment region, and a line left holding a bare delimiter goes with it. Five files keep their comments behind a nocheck marker instead. Four are upstream configs whose inline docs are upstream's own (mautrix, systemd journald, nextcloud-oidc-login, MediaWiki). In littlejs the commented-out entries ARE the deactivation mechanism for an example tile, so deleting them would delete configuration. """Lint that pins ``PROJECT_ROOT`` to a single canonical source.
Three rules are enforced:
1. Every Python file in the repo (``*.py``) MUST NOT compute the
project root locally. The forbidden patterns are:
* a top-level assignment that climbs ``parents[N]`` from
``__file__`` into a ``*_ROOT``-style variable,
* a bare ``Path(__file__).…parents`` chain (no ``[N]`` index)
used to iterate upward in search of the root,
* any chain of ``..`` segments (string literals or ``os.pardir``
references) used to walk up to the root,
* a function such as ``repo_root()`` / ``project_root()`` (or
their underscore-prefixed ``_repo_root`` / ``_project_root``
siblings) that searches upward for ``pyproject.toml``.
The single legitimate definition site is the package's own
``__init__.py``. Consumers MUST import ``PROJECT_ROOT`` from there
(relatively as ``from . import PROJECT_ROOT`` or absolutely as
``from <pkg> import PROJECT_ROOT``) so a future move of the file
does not silently break a hard-coded ``parents[N]`` index.
2. ``PROJECT_ROOT`` itself MUST only be assigned inside an
``__init__.py``. A ``PROJECT_ROOT = …`` line anywhere else (test
modules, ``__main__.py`` shims, helper modules, …) fails the lint
even when the right-hand side does not climb ``parents[N]`` —
re-binding the constant locally defeats the single-source guarantee
rule 1 was added to enforce.
3. Every ``__init__.py`` that DOES define ``PROJECT_ROOT`` MUST point
at a directory containing ``pyproject.toml``. A wrong
``parents[N]`` index turns the constant into a silent footgun;
the lint catches it the moment the index drifts off the repo root.
Suppression
-----------
Bootstrap files that prepend the repo root to ``sys.path`` before any
package import resolves (the ``__main__`` shims under ``cli/``) MUST
mark the offending line with ``# nocheck: project-root-import`` and
explain why the local computation is unavoidable. The same applies to
standalone scripts under ``roles/<role>/files/`` that have no
package container to import from. See
[suppression.md](../../../docs/contributing/actions/testing/suppression.md).
