The nfs backup rsyncs the whole export, and the shared backup root lives inside it (every node's DIR_BACKUPS is the mounted state dir), so each generation embedded a copy of all previous backups and grew quadratically; the giant listings also flushed real errors out of captured journals. The unit now passes the backup root relative to the export as an anchored rsync exclude, and recover.py protects the live root from --delete while never replaying embedded stale copies from old generations (DirectoryRecovery gains rsync_extra_args for that).
