Since 778c18fb23 the carrier key holds the tokens file's mtime and size.
sys-token-store changed that stat on every inclusion (00_core.yml
touched the file) and on every persisted token, and nothing re-parked a
carrier afterwards. Every later task's fresh worker then rendered the
applications SPOT cold, 30 to 80 s each. On main fea6f31d9f (run
38812964308) seven heavy jobs logged 194 to 287 such tasks and ran out
of the 20400 s budget; the same jobs before 778c18fb23 logged 65 to 83,
all of them real waits.
- 00_core.yml touches the store with modification_time and access_time
preserved, so it only creates a missing file. In swarm the controller
sees the store over NFS with attribute caching, and the touch alone
made the second pass go cold without any write.
- write.yml re-parks the carrier when the persist or the controller
mirror changed the store. Both run once, so every host that ran the
include gets the same verdict.
- tasks/utils/setup/role.yml re-parks after every role on every host,
so hosts that did not run the writing role recover too. Where the
key still matches this serves the carried payload; measured 0.1 s per
role in a local compose deploy.
- The tokens file enters the key as the SHA-256 of its content,
memoised per inode, mtime and size, so a touch no longer changes the
key. A stat that still matches serves the memo (1.67 us against
1.41 us for the old stat signature), and a stale stat keeps key and
YAML cache on the same old content instead of pairing new content
with an old key.
- applications_carrier opens the tokens file before it computes the
key, so on the NFS-mounted controller the parked key reflects the
revalidated attributes rather than a cached stat that changes a
minute later.

The constructor parked no applications carrier between the merge block
and the token store, so every lookup in the svc-swarm-node, svc-storage,
svc-registry and svc-virt bootstrap rendered the SPOT cold, 25 to 30 s
each on a loaded host.
A carrier there was unsafe: in swarm, svc-storage-nfs-server mounts the
NFS export over the controller's DIR_VAR_LIB, so the tokens file the
render reads can appear in the middle of that section, and the cache key
did not notice. merged_applications_cache_key now includes the tokens
file's path, mtime and size, as the users cache key already did, so a
carrier rejects itself once the tokens change. A carrier parked after
the add_host tasks then serves the bootstrap roles. It is parked only in
swarm mode: in compose the section runs in about a second, so a carrier
there would add a render without saving one.
In a swarm drill of web-app-prometheus up to the known NFS probe-write
failure, "Resolve the NFS server backend flavor" went from 29.6 s to
0.07 s, "Probe-mount the NFS export" from 26.4 s to 0.4 s, "Mount
cluster-shared infinito state on controller" from 23.7 s to 0.5 s and
"Ensure Docker-In-Docker DNS works" from 30.0 s to 3.6 s; the run to
that point took 768 s instead of 1735 s.

_all_project_files carried @lru_cache(maxsize=1) and read PROJECT_ROOT from the
module global inside its body, so the root was not part of the cache key. The
first call decided the answer for the rest of the process: point PROJECT_ROOT at
a fixture afterwards and the walk still reports the real repository, or, in the
other order, a sweep after the fixture is torn down enumerates a directory that
no longer exists.
Both failure modes are silent. iter_project_files, iter_project_files_with_content
and iter_non_ignored_files all sit on this one walk, 202 files in the tree use
them, and a lint whose corpus collapses to zero paths reports zero offenders and
passes. Nothing raises.
The root is now a parameter and therefore the key, with room for four of them.
_reset() still clears it through cache_clear(), and the only other caller is
iter_project_files, which passes str(PROJECT_ROOT) explicitly.
Live impact today is none, and that is worth stating: exactly one test patches
PROJECT_ROOT in this module, and it calls _reset() in both setUp and
addCleanup, so the defect was fully masked. Every other patch site in the repo
targets PROJECT_ROOT in a different module. This is about the next test that
forgets, not about a failure anyone has seen.
A regression test covers it rather than a comment. Negative control: with the
key removed the new test fails on the second root with
Items in the first set but not the second: '/tmp/.../first.txt'
and passes once the key is back; the file is byte-identical to its pre-probe
state afterwards.
The lint docstring that quoted the old cache shape is deleted rather than
updated, because a cross-module implementation reference goes stale the moment
that module changes, which is exactly what happened here.
Same class as c4556fe72d, which keyed the applications SPOT by the groups its
payload reads. That one was a live defect in utils/cache/base.py; this is the
latent twin one module over.
Residual: maxsize=4 is a choice, not a measurement. More than four roots alive
at once evicts the oldest, which re-walks rather than answers wrongly.

A service flag may be written as `{{ '<role>' in group_names }}`; 114
meta/services.yml files do exactly that, and it is the only host-dependent
variable any of them uses. The rendered payload therefore differs per host
while the cache key did not: it was built from applications, users,
DOMAIN_PRIMARY and SYSTEM_EMAIL_DOMAIN alone, and in the failing job all
five host_vars files were byte-identical.
113113e553 moved the render out of every task on the premise that Ansible
forks a fresh worker per task, so the in-process cache is always cold. That
holds for workers and not for the strategy's main process, which renders a
task's name once for the first host of a batch. Anything cached there is
inherited by every worker forked afterwards, and applications.py consults
that process cache before the host's own carrier fact, so an inherited
entry outranks the correct answer.
Pretix#2 of run 35152776835 shows both sides in one task: `skipping:
[web-app-pretix-swarm-mgr-01]` against `included: dedicated.yml for
wrk-01, wrk-02`, eleven seconds before mgr-01 resolved its database to
`pretix_database`. The swarm was running the central `postgres_postgres`,
so the wait never converged and the job died after 600 attempts. Variants 0
and 1 pin the flag to a literal and both pass; only variant 2 inherits the
Jinja.
The groups join the key as a sorted comma-joined string rather than a
tuple, because carrier.py stringifies only one side of its key comparison.
A non-scalar component would make the carrier silently stop matching and
every lookup re-render.
domains derives from the applications view and inherits the same
dependency, so this closes a second instance that had not surfaced yet.
users reads group_names nowhere. No extra rendering results: group_names is
constant inside a worker, and the one process that sees several hosts is
the one the split is for.

services.tor.enabled is Jinja in 99 of the 105 roles that declare it. A lookup('tls') or lookup('domains') inside a meta/*.yml value runs while the applications render is in flight, the re-entry guard hands it the unrendered tree, and _as_bool read the flag's own source text as False. The onion injection then did nothing for any app and the clearnet domain was returned.
fa3797540a already described this and quarantined it: the render state joined the domains cache key so the poisoned map answers no later read. The value stayed wrong, which is enough until a call site bakes it into applications. roles/web-svc-asset/meta/services.yml:15 is the only one in the repo that does, and in run 34922994823 it froze https://file.infinito.test/assets into the payload while every vhost of that round was published under the node onion. web-app-dashboard then waited 60 times on a host openresty answers with ssl_reject_handshake, and the deploy died on TLSV1_UNRECOGNIZED_NAME.
_resolved_flag renders enabled, exclusive and primary and raises when template text survives, the shape plugins/lookup/proxy_pass.py already uses. plugins/lookup/config.py and plugins/lookup/email.py render before coercing for the same reason; this module was the one that did not.
Measured across the whole map: 44 of 12819 leaves change, none added, none removed, 17 roles. 42 are clearnet to onion. The two others are repairs as well: keycloak's csp frame-ancestors moves from https to http, which is what an onion node serves, and the nextcloud sociallogin provider name stops being a hostname and becomes the bounded name that test_sociallogin_provider_name.py documents.
The new tests drive the same function with Jinja instead of the literal booleans the existing ones pass, which is why those never saw this. Three of the four fail without the fix.

26 roles resolve a domain in their metadata, so lookup('tls') and lookup('domains') run inside the applications render. Under the re-entry guard those calls receive the unrendered tree, whose service flags are still Jinja strings, and _as_bool reads "{{ 'svc-net-tor' in group_names }}" as false. The resulting map skipped onion injection for every app that does not enable tor literally, and it was cached, so it answered every later read in that process.
Before the applications carrier each worker rendered and poisoned its own cache the same way, which is why the shared Keycloak client registered 5 onion origins then and 65 now. The render state joins the cache key, so the render's own call sites still share one map while a later read builds the finished one.

Ansible forks a fresh worker process for every task, so the in-process
cache behind lookup('applications') was cold in every task. Each task that
touched the merged applications tree (config, domains, nginx, tls, cdn and
their callers) paid a full render: about 16 s on main and 21 to 23 s on this
branch, where ten more application roles carry MCP and AI Jinja. Measured on
the workspace jobs of run 33574056480 against the main run: 331 such tasks
(93 min, 39 % of the job) versus 391 (141 min, 43 %); the same unit is 9 to
43 % of every compose and swarm deploy job on disk. The parent process
rendered once per play, late, while templating a task name, and only the
tasks after that point ran warm.
The constructor now renders once through the new applications_carrier
action and parks the payload with its cache key in the host fact
_INFINITO_APPLICATIONS_RENDERED. Every later worker inherits the fact at
fork time and get_merged_applications serves it while the key (roles dir,
applications, users, DOMAIN_PRIMARY, SYSTEM_EMAIL_DOMAIN) still matches; a
mismatch falls back to the old render. The action masks its own result: the
payload is the whole tree with every credential, and CI runs with
MASK_CREDENTIALS_IN_LOGS false.
The task sits after the networks, design and service_provider merges, after
the add_host placements and after the token store. An independent review
showed that an earlier position bakes stale values into the play: the
web-app-wordpress title rendered to 'Blog by ' because service_provider did
not exist yet. User records inside the payload are the token store's state
at render time; readers of tokens captured later keep using lookup('users')
or lookup('config', app, 'users.…'), which read the users cache fresh.
Expected savings per job: about 130 min on a fork workspace run, 16 min on
an average compose deploy and 28 min on an average swarm deploy. The
constructor's own lookups before the carrier stay cold.

RFC 6761 reserves .test for testing and .example for documentation, and the
project's own domain was doing both jobs under the documentation name. It is
what default.env hands every local deploy and what the test fixtures assert
against, so it is a testing name.
Rename it wherever it stands for the running machine: the environment
defaults, the development inventory, the workspace and trust scripts, the test
suites, and the four documents that describe real behaviour - the DNS mapping
to loopback, the browser CA trust, WSL2 resolution. Those documents would have
started lying the moment default.env changed.
The sandbox allowlist moves with them, since egress is matched per pattern and
nothing resolves the old name any more, and the sandbox document that mirrors
that list follows it.
Two places keep .example on purpose: the link-style sample in the
documentation guide, which is documentation about documentation, and every
generic fixture name elsewhere in the suite - a.example, foo.example and their
kin. Those are a larger sweep of their own and are not touched here.

enabled and shared were hand-maintained in 24 roles and wrong in both
directions. Both now resolve from the mcp_consumer edges already declared
in meta/services.yml: a server takes the consumers it admits, a client
takes the servers that admit it, and the pair renders as "'peer' in
group_names or ...", or False when no peer is admitted at all. setdefault
keeps meta/mcp.yml and meta/variants.yml as the override channel, so
pinning either key still wins.
The resolved block replaces the mapping instead of being written into it.
_build_role_base_config parks the YAML cache's own object under mcp, so an
in-place setdefault injected the derived keys into every later raw read and
made test_mcp_schema pass alone but fail in a directory run.
The derivation keys on peer presence, never on a peer's own value: a
re-entrant read under _RENDER_GUARD returns the unrendered dict.
Four lints now ask the resolver instead of reading meta/mcp.yml, which they
could not do while the key was hand-written. That is what exposed the eleven
missing hostile-path specs the previous commit closed.
Carries one change that belongs to the WordPress probe but shares a file
with this one: the tool allowlist moves to the hyphenated names the adapter
actually serves.

This reverts 49f2dd516.
Its justification was wrong. I claimed the marker reached a running
Nextcloud as the stored Collabora WOPI URL. It did not: the deploy log
shows the executed command was
config:app:set richdocuments wopi_url --value 'https://collabora.infinito.example/'
02_manager_ops/06_plugin/03_configure.yml reads the addon file straight
from disk with include_vars, in role scope, precisely so those variables
resolve - its own header comment says so. The '<< error >>' strings
appear in the merged-applications payload that feeds the loop items, and
nothing configures the application from there. I read a payload dump and
took it for the value that was set.
The guard is also too broad for what it does catch: it fails the whole
render because one unrelated subtree could not resolve, so every deploy
with nextcloud in the application set would abort on a condition that
was previously a warning and changed no configuration.
The underlying observation stands - a captured template failure should
not be memoised - but it belongs at the boundary where a caller asks for
the affected value, not on the whole payload, and it needs a real case
before it is worth the blast radius.
Ansible's marker behaviour replaces an undefined name with the literal
'<< error N - NAME is undefined >>' instead of raising, and it is
inherited ambiently from whatever task is rendering, so code calling
templar.template(fail_on_undefined=True) gets that string back rather
than an exception.
_render_with_templar then returns it, get_merged_applications memoises
it unconditionally under a key that fingerprints only applications,
users and two domains, and hands the same object back without a
deepcopy. The first caller in the process therefore freezes the value
for every later one: a lookup from another role renders a role's addon
config without that role's vars, and the role itself is served the
poisoned result afterwards even though its own read happens in the right
scope.
It reached a running Nextcloud as the stored Collabora WOPI URL. A
configuration key set to an error message is worse than a missing one,
because the application stores it and reports itself configured.
The check sits at the end of the one function every merge render passes
through, so applications, users and domains are covered, and it runs
before any caller can memoise. The path is carried down while
descending, so the message names the offending key rather than the
payload. The pattern requires the ordinal and the dash so prose about
errors does not trip it.
2678090934 made the same choice for the lookup layer; this is the cache
layer.
This raises where the code used to continue. That is the point - a value
nobody can act on should stop a deploy rather than configure an
application - but the blast radius is only measured by the next deploy.
834 commits from the Tor onion-service branch against 299 of ours, from merge
base 7b646bdece: 127 conflicted files, 3506 files changed.
The two sides are largely orthogonal. Theirs adds svc-net-tor and a `tor` service
across the role tree, plus two sweeping refactors: shipped scripts sorted by
language (files/ruby/, files/python/, files/shell/, scripts/lint/*.sh) and the
unit suite moved under tests/unit/python/. Ours is requirement 036, the native AI
gateway, plus the MCP role work. Most conflicts were both sides appending to the
same service map, resolved as unions.
Resolutions that were not unions:
Credentials moved namespace. Theirs renamed meta/schema.yml to meta/secrets.yml
and re-addressed credentials as secrets.credentials.<name>. Git carried our
litellm_api_key blocks through the rename, but every consumer we added still read
'credentials.<name>', which no longer resolves. All 45 call sites are migrated.
plugins/filter/container_volumes.py is deleted by theirs and relocated to
plugins/lookup/container_volumes.py, where it carries the same tmpfs defect our
f85996b43 had just fixed: a hard-coded {"size": ...} that silently drops a per
mount `mode`. The fix is re-applied in the relocated file, as that commit's merge
note anticipated.
compose.yml keeps only INFINITO_PLAYWRIGHT_REPORTS_BASE_DIR. Theirs also forwards
INFINITO_PLAYWRIGHT_STAGE_BASE_DIR; that line is deliberately dropped, per the
analysis recorded in 45804e9ad -- STAGE has a drift-proof role-vars fallback,
while forwarding it promotes a setdefault-pinnable .env value above that SPOT.
tasks/stages/01_constructor.yml takes their include, ./tasks/utils/setup/group.yml,
because their refactor removed tasks/groups/*-roles.yml, leaving our include
target nonexistent. Our task name is kept, since svc-virt is in the loop.
Makefile swarm-zombie is a union: their validate plus teardown, then our
lab_subnet cleanup, which their side dropped while leaving lab_subnet.sh as the
only orphaned reference in the file.
01_bootstrap.sh keeps our deterministic --ip pinning, which distinguishes an
already-attached node from a real failure, over their `|| true`.
Their language-sorted layout orphaned references our side still held: zammad's
two scripts/apply/*.rb, jenkins' java-with-ca-trust.sh, and the notify topics
their handlers renamed to hyphenated form. All corrected.
roles/sys-svc-compose/files/shell/swarm/stack_ready.sh gains our latched-update
block: paused, rollback_paused, rollback_started and rollback_completed exit 2
rather than polling a state that cannot resolve without another deploy.
config_from_run is unioned to (title, logged, jobs); the production caller in
trigger/__main__.py now passes jobs, without which our suite suppression would
have been inert.
READMEs are regenerated rather than hand-merged: 15 LiteLLM rows and 91 Tor rows
now derive from the merged metadata, which is itself evidence the meta merge is
coherent.
Verified: 5161 unit tests pass. The single failure, test_query.py TestSortSpec,
also fails on fork/feature/svc-net-tor at b51d2f9919, measured in a baseline
worktree -- so this merge introduces no new unit-test failure. Two modules are
excluded from that run because `baudolo`, a dependency their branch introduces,
is not installed on this host.
Not verified: no deploy has run against the merged tree, and make quality has not
been run end to end here.

The composer vendor tree lands in the repo root during the workspace suite, and the cached project walk descends it, so third-party files turn repo lints red. 8ff6b490b patched two consumers; the filename convention lint was the third.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Every script a role ships now lives under `files/<language>/`, and the unit
suite is split the same way: `tests/unit/python/` beside new sibling trees for
the other languages. `tests/lint/filesystem/test_role_files_layout.py` keeps it
that way; directories whose shape is dictated from outside carry a `.nocheck`
naming the constraint (Docker build contexts, WordPress mu-plugins, the Joomla
extension, Odoo addons, Playwright suites, the `files/test/test.sh` harness
that `test-e2e-cli` resolves generically).
This cannot be applied in halves. Moving a file and repointing what names it
are the same change: 14 references resolve only at deploy time, so the tree is
green either before or after, never between.
Those 14 were found by static resolution over every reference class, not by the
test suite -- a full `make quality-high` was green while all of them were
broken:
* 7 `src:` values built from a role variable holding a bare filename
(svc-bkp-remote-2-local, decidim, espocrm, friendica, joomla, pixelfed x2).
The variable doubles as the destination name inside the container, so the
language segment belongs at the call site, not in the variable.
* `sys-service/tasks/04_base.yml` resolved every consumer's systemd script
through `first_found(..., errors='strict')` over `files/script.{sh,py}`.
18 roles ship exactly that and have no template fallback: the play would
have died on each.
* `sys-front-inj-javascript` fell back to `<role>/files/javascript.js`; the
interface now reads `files/javascript/javascript.js`.
* `sys-front-inj-logout/templates/head_sub.j2` built the cache-busting mtime
path through `path_absolute(... 'files', ...)`.
* 4 `ansible.builtin.script:` invocations naming a bare command
(pull.py, prune.sh, set_postgres_superuser_password.sh, ganesha-serve.sh).
* `dev-python/files/shell/install.sh` pointed at a sibling role's script.
Depth-dependent paths inside the moved trees were bumped accordingly: 59
`parents[N]` computations, 12 relative climbs, and the per-role recover CLI,
whose path `cli/administration/recover/recoverers.py` still assembled from the
pre-move location.
