scripts/meta/resolve/diff/affected_roles.sh emits __ALL__ as soon as
one changed path outside roles/<role>/ is not a .md or .rst file. A
role fix that also adds its unit test under tests/unit/python/roles/
therefore deployed the whole matrix: PR #982 changed
roles/web-app-zammad/ plus
tests/unit/python/roles/web-app-zammad/files/test_search_allocation_precheck.py,
and its "Detect affected roles" job logged "Resolver output: __ALL__".
Paths under tests/ now join the .md/.rst skip-list. No role deploy
reads the top-level tests/ tree, and those suites run in their own
jobs whatever the whitelist says. A diff of only skipped paths keeps
falling back to __ALL__, as before. The same resolver feeds
effective_whitelist.sh, so the narrowing applies to every diff-driven
run.

The loader copies INFINITO_DISTRO into a loader-local variable before it
compares the value with the one in .env. With INFINITO_DISTRO read directly in
that condition, `shellcheck -x scripts/meta/resolve/apps.sh` reported SC2153
for INFINITO_DISTROS, which apps.sh takes from the sourced .env; with the copy
it reports nothing, as on main.
The loader test checks that .env is unchanged with filecmp against the file it
was copied from, instead of reading it twice with Path.read_bytes, which
test_no_uncached_file_reads rejects.

The release backfill dispatches the highest version tag whose images are
missing. Every tag from v15.0.0 down to v9.0.2 has its images now, so since
2026-10-05 it picks v9.0.1 every day, and each of the nine runs failed in
"Build missing CI images / Image" at
`entry.sh: line 19: infinito: command not found`. The v9.0.1 tree cannot
build its own image; c680be12ea fixed that build in v9.0.2, and a tag cannot
take the fix.
highest_release_tag.sh now stops at v9.0.2: no tag below it is picked, so the
backfill reports nothing missing instead of retrying v9.0.1. v9.0.0 has the
same Dockerfile, Makefile and scripts/docker as v9.0.1.

A compose deploy job labelled centos or arch built its stack image from
pkgmgr-debian and ran it as infinito_nexus_debian (#794). distros.sh
exports INFINITO_DISTRO per iteration and sources load.sh again, but the
loader returned early because INFINITO_ENV_LOADED and the .env mtime were
unchanged. A full reload would not have helped either: the debian values
were already exported, so the restore step kept them as caller intent.
load.sh now records the distro it loaded for. Another INFINITO_DISTRO
defeats the early return and drops INFINITO_CONTAINER,
INFINITO_PARENT_IMAGE and INFINITO_IMAGE, the three keys the env handlers
derive from the distro. When the requested distro also differs from the
one .env was generated for, the loader sources a set that
`python -m cli.meta.env --output` generates for it in a private temp
directory and leaves .env untouched, so a local multi-distro run does not
switch the checkout's distro. A caller value set for the loaded distro
still wins.
Verified: tests/unit/python/scripts/meta/env/test_load.py and the new
distros.sh case pass. Against main's loader both fail with the symptom of
the issue: INFINITO_DISTRO=centos next to infinito_nexus_debian and
pkgmgr-debian:stable, and distros.sh handing debian, arch and centos the
same debian parent. shellcheck is clean.
Consequence: CI jobs labelled arch, ubuntu, fedora or centos now build
and deploy that distro, so a failure that shows up there was masked
before.
feature/store-i18n carries 3f973eb137, which resolves the parent image
for scripts/image/push.sh on its own, and 05e4dbafcb, which inserts the
INFINITO_INSTANCE slot check into the block this commit restructures. The
merge keeps the slot check ahead of the distro check.

The wait job picks the newest privileged run on the head commit of the
PR. Two fork PRs that share a head repository, branch and commit but
target different bases each start such a run, and the commit alone cannot
tell them apart. A failed run of the other PR would then end the wait of
this one while its images are still being built.
The run name of the workflow carries the PR number, so the match now
requires it next to the head commit. A run without that name matches
nothing, and the wait does what it does whenever no run is found: it
keeps polling for the images until they exist or the wait times out.
Raised by the CodeRabbit review of this PR.
Refs #784

The wait for fork CI images never found the privileged workflow run it
watches. It selected a run only when the run's pull_requests array held
the PR number, and for a run whose head repository is a fork the API
returns that array empty. The job only runs for fork PRs, so the lookup
matched in no case it exists for.
The early exit for a failed privileged run was therefore unreachable.
When that run failed, the job kept polling until its timeout of 1980
attempts and held a runner for about five and a half hours.
The lookup now asks the API for the runs of the PR head commit and
selects by head_sha. That also replaces a paginated listing of every run
of the workflow with one small request per attempt. Without a known head
commit the match by PR number stays.
Refs #784

The job that waits for the CI images of a fork PR ended on the first
failed GitHub API call. The lookup of the privileged workflow run is
assigned with run_json="$(find_matching_run)" under set -e, so a failing
gh ended the script, although the loop is built for 1980 attempts. PR #782
went red that way: GitHub answered one request with HTTP 504 in attempt
31, while the privileged run was still queued.
A failed lookup now counts as "no information in this attempt" and the
loop goes on waiting for the images, which are its success criterion.
Thirty failed lookups in a row end the job with a message that names the
cause, so a broken token does not hold a runner until the timeout.
The test runs the script against a gh that fails every lookup. The
previous script fails both cases at the first lookup.

The sync job force-pushed the source repository's main onto this one so that
`origin/main` would mean "upstream main" for the three consumers that diff
against it. Carrying .github/workflows/** in that push is what GitHub refuses
for an App token, and `workflows` is not a GITHUB_TOKEN permission scope, so the
job needed an app installation that may write workflow files. Run 37169357364
showed the fork has no such secret at all.
Nothing reads the pushed branch. push_ci_policy.sh, affected_roles.sh and
new_roles.sh each fetch `origin main` into their own runner's clone before
reading it, and no caller queries the branch through the API. Pointing those
fetches at the configured source repository gives the same baseline read-only:
no push, no credential, no app permission to widen.
baseline_remote.sh resolves where that baseline comes from and keeps the
normalization and the disabled-value list in one place: `origin` for the source
repository itself, for a disabled sync and for a local clone without
GITHUB_REPOSITORY, and the upstream fetch URL otherwise. The fetches now carry
an explicit `main:refs/remotes/origin/main` refspec, which a URL needs and a
remote name tolerates.
The release guard keeps fetching `origin`: it asks whether a tag commit sits on
this repository's own main, which is a different question from the diff
baseline.
Removed: the sync-main job, its `needs` edge, main_from_repository.sh and the
directory that held it.
test_diff_affected_roles.py copies only the script under test into its fixture,
so it needed the new helper too. It also inherited the full environment, and a
GITHUB_REPOSITORY present in CI would have sent the fixture's baseline fetch to
the real upstream instead of its own bare remote: three of its five cases fail
that way, and the run takes 24s instead of 0.3s because it goes to the network.
The variable is now dropped alongside BASH_ENV.
Verified by running the helper in all four contexts and affected_roles.sh from
an empty refs/remotes/origin/main in a scratch clone as the fork, as the source
repository and locally; each populated the ref and completed.

An image bump in a provider redeployed every variant of every consumer,
including the variants that switch that provider off and therefore never
deploy the bumped image at all. The diff-derived whitelist now narrows each
affected role to the variants whose own round closure still reaches a seed,
emitted as `role#0,2` selection tokens. That closure is walked on the same
variant-merged services maps the matrix planner builds its rounds from, so the
narrowing follows a parent's variant choice across every generation of the
chain. It covers every auto-derived whitelist: the weekly update PRs,
Dependabot, and any other diff-driven run.
The narrowing never shrinks the matrix on partial information. A seed role
keeps every variant, because its own files changed. A role reached only
through a run_after edge keeps every variant too, because the round closure
does not follow that edge and a role whose hits are empty is therefore
unnarrowed rather than dropped.
A pinned token naming a role the discovery query does not return now warns
instead of aborting the run. The diff-derived whitelist legitimately names
roles the lifecycle envelope filters out, and once it pins variants such a
token would abort every chunk; role names are still checked against roles/
before the run starts, so a typo is caught one layer earlier.
The round's variant merge moves out of the deploy inventory package into
utils/roles/applications/variants.py. The CI selection has to build the same
maps, and importing the deploy package for them pulls in a module that reads
INFINITO_SRC_DIR at import time, which the runner host does not set.

For a fork PR the build step is skipped -- the images come from the
privileged run -- so the job went green in 29 seconds while that run was
still pushing. Everything gated on it inherited the lie: the DNS test
pulled arch 3m30s too early on one run and 53s too early on the next,
both times 'manifest unknown', and the four deploy chunks were spared
only by starting later.
The job now polls until every distro image for its tag is in the
registry. It runs unconditionally: where the job built the images itself
the first poll passes, and a push that silently failed is caught too.
The poll drives scripts/meta/resolve/missing/ci_images.sh, which already
owned that check for the release workflow, so the ref shape is not
written a fourth time. A resolver that cannot run aborts with 2 rather
than reading as 'not yet pushed' and hiding behind the full budget.

The package-cache frontend terminates TLS for package traffic and signs
with its own CA: probed from inside the test container, pypi.org arrives
as subject CN=pypi.org issued by CN=Infinito Package-Cache Frontend CA.
package-frontend-ca.sh installs that CA into the OS store, which is why
apt, pip, curl and urllib work — but requests reads certifi, which has
never heard of it, so test-external failed its reachability precondition
with CERTIFICATE_VERIFY_FAILED. Upgrading certifi does not help; the
issuer is not a public root.
load.sh is where the runner puts the venv on PATH, so it is also where the
interpreter carrying the pip certifi is chosen; pointing REQUESTS_CA_BUNDLE
and SSL_CERT_FILE at the store the stack deliberately fills keeps one trust
decision instead of two. A caller-set value still wins.
The bundle location was about to become a fourth copy: dev-nix and the
network diagnose CLI each carried their own candidate list, and the two had
already drifted apart in their fourth entry. All of them now read
group_vars CA_BUNDLE_CANDIDATES — Ansible directly, the shell through a
generated env key, python through read_group_paths.

A run-wide draw proved one distribution and said nothing about the other four, while reporting green. Both are matrix-row axes now, assigned by the same deterministic rotation mode and tor already use, so one sweep exercises every distribution and every filesystem.
The two read the row's position like an odometer, the distro as the low digit. Turning both on the position directly covers only n of the n x m pairs whenever the pools are the same length, and no sweep unlocks it.
Both are part of a row's identity: glyphs in the job label, columns in the plan table, shards in the artifact name. Both are selectable through %distro and /filesystem, and a retrigger replays the distro off a failed title. It leaves the filesystem out, because a title states the kind the matrix assigned and a deploy may have fallen back from it.
A row's filesystem is a preference unless a human names it, on the run or in a token. Reading the matrix's own narrowing as a demand would fail rows for every transient condition the applying step is built to tolerate.

3529 invalid comments in 528 files, grandfathered in while the linter
only saw the working-tree diff. Removal ran through the linter's own
collectors, so detection and deletion cannot drift: a comment whose
opener line is blank before it and whose closer line is blank after it
loses all its lines, anything else loses only the comment region, and a
line left holding a bare delimiter goes with it.
Five files keep their comments behind a nocheck marker instead. Four are
upstream configs whose inline docs are upstream's own (mautrix, systemd
journald, nextcloud-oidc-login, MediaWiki). In littlejs the
commented-out entries ARE the deactivation mechanism for an example
tile, so deleting them would delete configuration.

The regular rows began wherever (sweep * capacity) % count pointed. On run 210
that was offset 68: chunk 0 opened at candidate 69, the coverage-first head of
the list went undeployed, and no two runs could be compared because the window
moved with the run number. A run that looked wrong turned out to be merely
rotated, and finding that out meant recomputing the arithmetic by hand.
The rotation is gone. Chunk 0 reads the ranking from the top unless an offset
says otherwise, and the offset is an input now, threaded from the manual form
through the orchestrator and the deploy call down to the matrix builder. The
plan renderer takes the same flag, so the table shows the window the run will
take.
The offset is a row count or a selection token. A token is the honest form:
the ranking shifts whenever a variant appears, so 'offset 84' means something
different tomorrow while 'web-app-nextcloud#5' still means the same row. Axes
the token leaves open match anything, so a bare role name starts at its first
row and a pasted job label starts at exactly the job it names. A token that
matches no regular row aborts rather than silently starting at the head an
operator meant to skip.
The run title carries it as ⏩ followed by the value, and only when one was
asked for, so a rotated-looking run says so in its own name and the retrigger
reads it back from there when a job log has expired.
resume_from_chunk leaves the manual form with it. Skipping whole chunks was
the coarse way to say 'carry on further down'; the offset says it exactly and
keeps the rest of the chain intact. The orchestrator input stays for the other
entry points.
What this gives up is automatic tail coverage. Rows beyond the budget are
reached by moving the offset, widening the budget or narrowing the selection,
not by waiting for consecutive sweeps to walk the list.

call-test-deploy-{compose,host,swarm,single-node}.yml differed only in
which mode they pinned and which artifact prefix they wrote; compose and
host already ran the identical drill. They become one call-test-deploy.yml
whose matrix rows carry the mode, so the swarm-specific steps are guarded
on it and everything else is shared.
The orchestrator loses its eight deploy jobs and the sequencing job for
three serial chunk blocks. GitHub Actions cannot generate a variable
number of jobs, so the blocks are written out and INFINITO_CI_MAX_CHUNKS
tells the budget how many exist; blocks whose slice is empty skip
themselves. chunk_gate stops the chain at the first red chunk,
resume_from_chunk re-enters after a fix instead of re-running the green
chunks, and modes collapses to a single mode choice.
apps.sh now emits matrix entries for one chunk rather than a token list
for one mode, and no longer sorts them: the discovery order is what the
chunker slices on. split_runner_apps.sh reads its runner quota from
INFINITO_CI_CONCURRENCY instead of carrying a second copy of the 20.

Twelve conflicts, resolved by intent rather than by side.
Six shared one shape: the incoming side adds the new rescue_index.sh call but
drops this branch's `# nocheck: shell-or-true` markers. The markers carry a
lint contract here, so the incoming structure was taken and the markers put
back — dedicated.sh, guide/one.sh, guide/host_deploy.sh, swarm/routine/00_one.sh
and trigger_units.sh, where the incoming version additionally writes the full
journal to a file instead of only echoing a tail.
web-app-matrix keeps HEAD's _synapse_extra_args accumulator (the superset: CA
mount plus the onion case) but adopts the incoming improvement inside it — the
inlined regex_replace gives way to lookup('subnet_gateway').
handlers/__init__.py drops rescue_diagnostics_dir from the old import group
(the incoming side moved it under .infinito.rescue, keeping both would import
it twice) and keeps tor_socks_port, a HEAD-only handler ORDERED_HANDLERS still
needs.
svc-bkp-volume-2-local takes the incoming side throughout: both branches landed
the same feature, but swarm-nfs evolved it — the knob moved from the global
STORAGE_BACKUP_SNAPSHOT_MODE to services.volume-2-local.snapshot_mode, plus the
subvolume helper, 04_snapshot_subject.yml, meta/packages.yml and baudolo 3.2.2.
Three files that left behind were removed: files/baudolo_snapshot.py and the two
worktree tests at their pre-refactor paths, all byte-identical to their moved
counterparts.
Six follow-on failures the merge produced, fixed at the root:
- STORAGE_BACKUP_SNAPSHOT_MODE lost its last reader with the config-lookup
design and is gone from group_vars.
- utils/github/variant_bundle_limits.py sat next to variant_bundles.py, which
the prefix lint forbids; the pair now lives in utils/github/variant/ as
bundles.py and bundle_limits.py, with the -m entry point, the ruff
per-file-ignore, the design-doc link and the mirroring test path updated.
- The incoming WordPress addon spec navigated with a raw page.goto and carried
three bare timeout literals; both route through gotoOnion and resolveTimeout
now, which is what makes navigation survive onion transport.
- Six unmarked `|| true` got a concrete reason each: docker.socket is absent on
distros that ship docker without it, the loop device is already detached when
the probe failed before attaching, and modprobe zfs may fail because the
/dev/zfs check decides.
make quality green across all four targets. The cold-domains budget test that
had to be waived here passes on its own now — 19d56f07e raises it to 100s.

The serial distro loop (shuffle, time budget, fast-fail skip, exit on the first failing distro) lived inline in scripts/tests/deploy/ci/all.sh and was therefore reachable only from the compose and host deploys. Swarm and guide have to iterate distros with the same semantics, so the loop moves into scripts/tests/deploy/distros.sh and takes the per-distro command as "$@".
ci/all.sh keeps the app-level preamble and execs the loop with the new ci/one.sh, which resolves the CI image and dispatches to the per-app override or dedicated.sh.
Image resolution leaves the loop as well: scripts/meta/resolve/image/ci.sh renders the reference through cli.meta.ci.image_ref instead of respelling ghcr.io/... locally, which meta/distros.yml declares as the single source.
The two CI time knobs are declared in default.env instead of being repeated as literals, so no caller has to invent a budget.
Three paths are dropped as dead: the empty budget that disabled the limit, the failed counter that could only ever print 0, and the branch for an unset deadline.
Both new scripts are pinned by contract tests. Those tests clear BASH_ENV because the test container exports it as the env loader, which would otherwise re-inject every stripped key and make the assertions pass for the wrong reason.

moby/buildkit was hardcoded in four places across two workflows and catthehacker/ubuntu in two act scripts, none of them reachable by the image mirror: utils/docker/image/discovery.py only scans roles/**/meta/services.yml. So the one image the CI build cannot proceed without was pulled straight from Docker Hub, unmirrored, which is what broke the fedora build in run 30160077828.
Declare both as mirror-only services on svc-runner, following the test-e2e-playwright precedent, so the existing mirror pipeline picks them up unchanged. New scripts/meta/resolve/image/service_ref.sh reads image+version back out of the declaration and is the single source for consumers outside Ansible; its mode argument is mandatory (upstream never touches the network, mirror prefers the GHCR tag and falls back to upstream). The fallback is why the mirror job can keep running in parallel with the build instead of gating it.
ACT_PLATFORM_IMAGE moves to an env handler so act consumers read the declared value via BASH_ENV, and workflow.sh now demands it instead of defaulting to a literal. Operator overrides still win through eb.setdefault.
Verified: service_ref.sh in all four paths (upstream, mirror hit, missing mode, invalid mode); the mirror path matches GHCRProvider.image_base() character for character and resolves against the live registry anonymously; ACT_PLATFORM_IMAGE resolves through the real BASH_ENV mechanism; make quality green on all four targets.

load.sh short-circuits on INFINITO_ENV_LOADED, so a shell that already
sourced the env kept a stale copy after 'make dotenv' regenerated .env
(make runs in a subshell and cannot reset the parent's guard), and a
freshly added key was missing until a new shell. Gate the short-circuit
on the .env mtime: re-source when it changed, still a fast no-op when it
did not. A stat failure falls back to the previous idempotent behaviour.

A push resolves the application roles that exist under roles/ locally but
not at origin/main and passes them as the orchestrator priority line, so
brand-new roles deploy and gate ahead of the regular matrix. The resolver
is stdlib-only (git ls-tree plus an application_id line scan) so it runs
on a bare runner without installing the resolver stack, and yields an
empty set when the baseline ref cannot be resolved.

The discovery SPOT (cli.meta.ci.query) now runs one query shape per mode:
compose and host stay whole-role with variants packed into bundles, swarm
ranks and budget-cuts on per-variant rows and emits role#variant tokens
through apps.sh into variant_bundles, so the cut can pick a subset of a
role's variants and the --matrix view is the selection priority.
Replace the --unique flag with visible dna/clone columns (heaviest role
per dna cluster stays ahead of the cut), add the integrated column and
sort, count host bundles like compose, and give the deploy plan an id
counter, per-variant weights and display-width-aware alignment matching
the matrix renderer. Add i8ma*/i8pa* inspection aliases per mode.

cli.meta.ci.query is the single source of truth for the app-discovery
query (filter, coverage-first sort, lifecycle envelope, compose
--unique, INFINITO_MAX_JOBS cap with 'auto'); apps.sh shrinks to one
call through it. cli.meta.ci.plan renders one section per deploy mode
in the query's own order (priority line starred, capped regular line,
then the candidates behind the cut), one row per variant, glossary
symbols in the header, with --cli for fixed-width terminal tables.
New glossary symbols: skip, priority, distros, unavailable.

cli.meta.ci.slots statically and conservatively counts every job the
CI run spawns outside the deploy matrices (reusable workflows opened
recursively, static matrices multiplied out, dynamic ones estimated,
worst entry-*.yml overhead included) and splits the remaining
256-job run budget between compose/swarm/host by the _SHARES weights,
with a per-mode floor and _SLOT_OVERRIDES pins. INFINITO_MAX_JOBS
defaults to 'auto', resolved per mode in apps.sh; the host workflow
drops its hardcoded cap. --matrix renders the budget as a table.

test-deploy-single-node.yml bundles the compose and host deploy tests
behind one reusable workflow; the orchestrator gains a priority input
that deploys focus roles first per mode and runs the remaining roles
only after every priority job succeeded, excluded via the new
INFINITO_BLACKLIST discovery filter in apps.sh. entry-manual exposes
the priority field and treats priority-only dispatches as roles-only.
Workflow dependency diagram added under .github/workflows/README.md.

meta/services.yml modes states where a role RUNS; a new meta/tests.yml
skip list deactivates TESTING a mode without touching that capability.
The table gains test_compose/test_swarm/test_host columns (base column
minus skip), --filter/--sort and the JSON/YAML payloads know the new
fields, and CI discovery (apps.sh) now filters on test_<mode> == true.
svc-storage-nfs-client is the first consumer and skips all three modes.
Also replaces the nine VS16-based header/lifecycle emojis (like the
old host/jobs/weight symbols) with East-Asian-Wide ones: terminals
render VS16 sequences 2 cells wide while the width model said 1,
shifting every header right of them off its column. A guard test pins
all table symbols to wide, VS16-free codepoints.

Host lane for invokable non-stack roles (drivers, backup, wireguard, swapfile, ...). modes.host.enabled declared on 56 such roles; new lint test_role_host_mode enforces it. The complexity matrix gains a host column (not stack and modes.host.enabled), --deploy-mode host, and host bundles (one per variant); apps.sh accepts INFINITO_DEPLOY_MODE=host and filters host == true. New test-deploy-host.yml workflow (INFINITO_MAX_JOBS=10) deploys discovered host roles via the mode-agnostic ci/all.sh path, wired into ci-orchestrator (modes default 'swarm compose host').
Also: complexity -s/--symbol compact view (emoji-only headers, true/false as check/cross, lifecycle stage symbols, grouped legend with per-entry explanations, display-width aligned); stack column moved after host. scripts/meta/env/load.sh made zsh-compatible by delegating to bash and importing INFINITO_/PYTHON/VENV/PATH back.

Move files that share a delimiter-bounded name prefix within a folder (threshold 2) into a subfolder named after the prefix, dropping the prefix from the filename. Covers plugins/filter (docker, generate, has, merge, get/all), env handler subpackages, utils/roles/entity, utils/tests/swarm/write, role SQL/scripts/templates, keycloak/mailu task-includes, shared tasks/utils/load, and CI scripts. Update every import, query_file/script/include_tasks/src/lookup target, compose bind mount, and python -m path to the new locations.
Extend the prefix-grouped-files lint to threshold 2 with dir-level .nocheck and file-head nocheck opt-outs, and skip groups whose shortest member's stem equals the shared prefix. Keep flat only where a loader forbids nesting: WordPress mu-plugins and the docs/requirements namespace. Ansible filter discovery is recursive, so nested filters stay Jinja-resolvable.

Lifecycle envelope for test-deploy discovery is now driven by
INFINITO_LIFECYCLES (default: alpha beta rc stable) instead of a
hardcoded constant. apps.sh forwards it to the complexity CLI via a
new --lifecycles flag (comma- or whitespace-separated); the model
falls back to the built-in default when unset.
Manual CI (entry-manual) gains two override fields: 'lifecycles' to
override the envelope per run, and 'modes' (default 'swarm compose')
to pick which deploy jobs run. ci-orchestrator gates test-deploy-compose
and test-deploy-swarm on the selected modes and threads lifecycles into
both. The new key is registered in the passthrough handler so it lands
in the generated .env.

The complexity report orders roles coverage-first and caps them with --max-jobs; that order must drive selection. Once selected, re-sort the surviving roles alphabetically so the swarm and compose deploy matrices list jobs in a stable ascending order. The storage filter and variant_bundles both preserve input order, so the final matrix stays sorted.

Drive the test-deploy matrix discovery through the complexity report instead of the type CLI: apps.sh selects the mode's tested roles via the 'compose'/'swarm' column (which already bakes in invokable + tested-lifecycle + per-mode skip), orders them coverage-first, and hard-caps the cumulative per-mode runner budget.
- complexity gains --deploy-mode {compose, swarm} (makes 'bundles'/'jobs' the runner count for that mode: compose packs variants into size/storage bundles, swarm runs one per deployable variant) and --max-jobs N (keep only the leading rows whose cumulative jobs stay below N).
- apps.sh emits whole role names; variant_bundles/output_apps.sh expand them into the matrix unchanged. Manual INFINITO_WHITELIST becomes a 'name %% {…}' filter clause applied before the cut, so a manual run only counts the apps it actually invokes.
- INFINITO_DEPLOY_MODE is now required; INFINITO_MAX_JOBS, INFINITO_DISCOVERY_SORT and INFINITO_REQUIRED_STORAGE move to default.env (the SPOT) + the passthrough handler, so no shell-side defaults remain.

The merged subset feature failed test-lint: a .py under scripts/, a local parents[N] PROJECT_ROOT, a direct yaml.safe_load, an uncached read, and narration comments.
- move scripts/meta/resolve/pr/subset_roles.py -> cli.meta.ci.subset_roles (scripts/ is .sh-only); dispatcher invokes it via python -m
- parse via utils.cache.yaml.load_yaml_str; import utils.PROJECT_ROOT
- test invokes the module via -m against real roles; nocheck the tempfile read
- strip narration comments; docs document HOW not WHY

The maintainer-only manual CI dispatch (workflow_dispatch) cannot be triggered by fork contributors. The 🧩 Subset label closes that gap: when present on a PR, the detect-affected-roles job resolves the deploy whitelist from an explicit roles: YAML block in the PR body instead of the diff, giving fork PRs the same narrowed matrix a maintainer would dispatch manually. Without the label, behavior is unchanged (the dispatcher falls through to the diff resolver, output byte-identical).
- subset_roles.py: parse and strictly validate the PR-body roles block (invalid YAML / empty / unknown id / path-traversal all hard-fail)
- pr_affected_roles.sh: single dispatcher selecting subset vs diff resolver
- entry-pull-request-change.yml: wire the label and PR body into the job
- PR templates, pipeline/workflows docs and READMEs, integration tests

Add a `skip: [compose, swarm]` field on a role's meta/services.yml primary entity
so an app can opt out of the test-deploy matrix per deploy mode, replacing the
hardcoded exclude regex in apps.sh (the "TODO: Remove exclude condition"). The
filter threads through both discovery paths: the CI workflows pass
INFINITO_DEPLOY_MODE -> apps.sh -> `cli meta roles applications type
--skip-mode`, and roundtrip.sh honours the same get_role_skip SPOT per app/mode.
Apply skip: [compose, swarm] to svc-storage-nfs-server and svc-storage-nfs-client
(NFS storage is swarm-only and set up via the cluster inventory, not the matrix)
and web-opt-rdr-www (the previously regex-excluded app).
Covered by get_role_skip and skip_mode-filter unit tests.
