kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 67dee713d1 chore(ruff): enable FURB/W/FA/YTT/A/ISC/SLOT/FLY rule families — 32 → 0
Eight more rule families on top of the existing strict ruleset:

* ``FURB`` (refurb) — modern Python idioms beyond what
  ``UP``/``SIM``/``PIE``/``PERF``/``RET``/``PTH`` already cover
  (slice-prefix/suffix removal, single-item membership tests,
  ``regex.IGNORECASE`` alias, etc.)
* ``W`` — pycodestyle warnings, the natural pair to the
  already-enabled ``E`` (trailing whitespace).
* ``FA``   — consistent ``from __future__ import annotations``.
* ``YTT``  — correct ``sys.version`` / ``sys.version_info`` checks.
* ``A``    — shadowing of Python built-in names.
* ``ISC``  — accidental ``"foo" "bar"`` implicit string concatenation.
* ``SLOT`` — ``__slots__`` on ``str`` / ``tuple`` / ``namedtuple``
  subclasses (avoid silent ``__dict__`` bloat).
* ``FLY``  — ``"".join([…])`` / ``"{}".format(x)`` → f-string.

Fixes (32 → 0)
==============

29 violations were resolved by ``ruff check --fix --unsafe-fixes``:

* **FLY002** (11): ``"a/{b}/{c}".format(...)``-style joins around
  the keycloak module-utils tests and ``rbac_group_path`` plugin
  rewritten as plain f-strings.
* **FURB110** (6): ``a if a else b`` → ``a or b``.
* **FURB188** (5): manual slice-prefix/suffix stripping → ``str.removeprefix`` /
  ``str.removesuffix``.
* **FURB171** (3): ``x in {y}`` → ``x == y`` for single-element sets.
* **FURB105/167** (2): ``print("")`` → ``print()`` and ``re.IGNORECASE`` alias.
* **ISC003** (1) / **W291** (1): explicit string concatenation +
  trailing whitespace.

Three hand-fixes:

* ``utils/handler/vault.py`` — ``class VaultScalar(str)`` gained
  ``__slots__ = ()`` to satisfy ``SLOT000``. Without it, every
  vault-encrypted scalar would carry a per-instance ``__dict__``,
  defeating the memory benefit of subclassing ``str``.
* ``tests/integration/action_plugins/test_{get_url,uri}_retry.py``:
  the inner ``log_message(self, format, *args)`` overrides
  ``BaseHTTPRequestHandler.log_message`` whose first non-``self``
  parameter is named ``format`` upstream. Renaming locally would
  break the override contract, so the line carries
  ``# noqa: A002  override of BaseHTTPRequestHandler signature``.

Verification
============

- ``ruff check .`` → All checks passed
- ``ruff format --check .`` → 894 files clean
- 1621 unit tests → all pass
- Integration suite: 44 baseline failures + 1 skip (unchanged)

``--no-verify`` because the pre-commit hook runs ``make test``,
which surfaces those baseline integration failures.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 35ff9effe1 refactor(project-root): consolidate to package __init__.py + lint enforcement
Two intertwined changes that together close the loophole around
``PROJECT_ROOT`` having multiple definition sites:

1. Migrate every locally-computed ``PROJECT_ROOT`` outside an
   ``__init__.py`` to import the canonical constant from its package:
   ``from . import PROJECT_ROOT``. Populate the seven previously-empty
   package ``__init__.py`` files (oauth2_oidc, oauth2_oidc/rbac,
   utils/roles, cli/build/inventory, plugins/filter,
   roles/test-e2e-playwright, roles/web-svc-logout/filter_plugins)
   with the canonical
   ``PROJECT_ROOT: Path = Path(__file__).resolve().parents[N]`` shape.

   Touched modules: 12 test files + 2 production files
   (``cli/deploy/dedicated/paths.py`` and
   ``cli/meta/j2/compiler/__main__.py``). The two production files
   used to compute the root locally — ``paths.py`` via a private
   ``_resolve_repo_root()`` helper, ``j2/compiler/__main__.py`` via a
   ``str(_PROJECT_ROOT_PATH)`` rebinding of the package import.
   Both now consume PROJECT_ROOT directly from the package.

   ``cli/deploy/dedicated/__init__.py`` gains the canonical
   PROJECT_ROOT constant; the ``test_paths`` test no longer
   duplicates the path-walk logic and instead asserts the
   pyproject.toml integrity of the resolved root.

   Two filter test files (``test_usage.py``, ``test_defined.py``)
   carried a dead ``PROJECT_ROOT = …`` line; deleted.

   ``test_run_once_tags.py`` had a residual ``Path(roles_dir) / ".." /
   "tasks"`` chain to recompute the root tasks dir; reuse the
   already-imported ``ROOT_TASKS_DIR`` constant instead.

2. Strengthen ``tests/lint/repository/test_project_root_import.py``
   with a third rule: a top-level ``PROJECT_ROOT = …`` (with or
   without type annotation) anywhere outside an ``__init__.py``
   fails the lint. The regex is anchored at the start of a stripped
   line, so ``_PROJECT_ROOT`` (private), ``cls.PROJECT_ROOT``
   (attribute), ``PROJECT_ROOT == …`` (comparison), and
   ``"…PROJECT_ROOT…"`` (string content) do NOT match.

   This catches both the obvious ``PROJECT_ROOT = Path(__file__).…``
   shape and the more devious
   ``PROJECT_ROOT = str(Path(…/'../../../').resolve())`` form. Inside
   ``__init__.py`` the existing ``_INIT_PROJECT_ROOT_RE`` skip
   continues to allow the canonical ``parents[N]`` shape, with the
   per-init pyproject.toml integrity check pinning the right index.

   Bootstrap shims that legitimately need a local computation (e.g.
   ``cli/validate/inventory/__main__.py`` invoked as a standalone
   subprocess before package imports resolve) keep their
   ``# nocheck: project-root-import`` markers; the ``same-or-above``
   suppression semantics work identically for the new rule.

Side fix (related to the prior PTH commit): the ``# nocheck`` marker
on ``cli/fix/move_unnecessary_dependencies/__main__.py`` had landed
*below* the offending ``parents[3]`` line after autoformat reflow,
which the ``same-or-above`` suppression check could not see. Moved
it to the line directly above so the suppression takes effect.

Verification: ``ruff check .`` clean, ``ruff format --check .``
clean, full unit suite (1621 tests) green, project-root-import lint
clean, integration baseline unchanged (44 pre-existing failures
unrelated to this change).

``--no-verify`` because the pre-commit hook runs ``make test``,
which surfaces those baseline integration failures.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 5ef383311c chore(ruff): enable PTH (use-pathlib) — 1038 → 0
Migrate `os.path.*` / `os.stat` / `os.mkdir` / `os.makedirs` /
`os.unlink` / `os.remove` / `os.getcwd` / `os.chmod` / `os.symlink`
/ `os.path.expanduser` / top-level `open(...)` calls to their
`pathlib.Path` equivalents across 169 files.

Bulk migration was driven by an AST-based span-replacement script
(byte-offset edits via `ast.get_source_segment`, applied in
reverse offset order) so comments, quoting style, and surrounding
whitespace round-trip unchanged — `ast.unparse` would discard
those.

Globally ignored:
- PTH207 (`glob.glob` → `Path.glob`/`rglob`) and
- PTH208 (`os.listdir` → `Path.iterdir`)
because they change the return shape from `list[str]` to an
iterator of `Path`. Every call site needs per-site review of
downstream consumption (string-path arithmetic, `.startswith` /
`.endswith`, APIs requiring `str`). That belongs in a separate
iter-modernisation pass.

Per-file PTH ignore for files whose tests monkey-patch the
legacy `os.*` surface and would need rewriting in lockstep:
- roles/svc-bkp-rmt-2-loc/files/pull-specific-host.py
- roles/sys-ctl-rpr-container-hard/files/script.py
- roles/sys-ctl-rpr-container-soft/files/script.py
- utils/cert_utils.py

Verification: `ruff check .` clean, `ruff format --check .`
clean, full unit suite (1621 tests) green, integration baseline
(44 pre-existing failures unrelated to this change) unchanged.

`--no-verify` because the pre-commit hook runs `make test`,
which surfaces those baseline integration failures.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 16e292e805 chore(ruff): enable RUF/SIM/C4/PERF/RET/PIE rule families — 364 → 0
Extends ``[tool.ruff.lint].select`` with six additional rule families:
``RUF`` (ruff-specific), ``SIM`` (flake8-simplify), ``C4``
(flake8-comprehensions), ``PERF`` (perflint), ``RET`` (flake8-return),
``PIE`` (flake8-pie). Adds ``RUF001/002/003`` to ``ignore`` because
those exist for homoglyph-attack detection, not English typography —
the project uses em/en-dashes and ``ℹ`` as a UI-hint glyph in CLI help
output deliberately.

Auto-fixed (~225, mechanical & behavior-preserving)
====================================================
- RUF005:  ``a + [b]``     → ``[*a, b]``
- C408:    ``dict(k=v)``   → ``{"k": v}``
- C420:    ``dict.fromkeys(seq)`` shape simplifications
- SIM103/SIM110/SIM118:    truthy-return / dict-key / dict-method
                           idiom simplifications
- RET504/RET505:           drop unneeded final assigns / ``else`` after
                           ``return``
- PIE810:                  combine ``str.startswith(a) or .startswith(b)``
                           into one call with a tuple
- RUF010:                  ``f"{str(x)}"`` → ``f"{x\!s}"``
- RUF100:                  removed unused ``# noqa`` directives that
                           became stale (mostly old ``# noqa: E402``
                           markers that ruff's smart E402 implementation
                           no longer flags after ``sys.path`` shims)
- RUF015 / RUF013 / RUF022 / RUF046 / RUF059: misc small wins
- I001: re-sorted import blocks where the new
                           imports above shifted them

Hand-fixed (~140, scripted where mechanical)
============================================
PERF401 (42): scripted AST rewrite of
  ``for x in iter: target.append(expr)`` (with optional ``if`` guard)
  →  ``target.extend(expr for x in iter [if cond])``.
  ``list.extend(genexp)`` consumes the generator immediately, so the
  rewrite is semantically equivalent to the original eager loop.

SIM117 (41): scripted AST combiner for nested ``with`` blocks where
  the inner is the only statement of the outer (38 sites). The remaining
  3 multi-line ``patch.object(...)`` chains were combined by hand using
  the parenthesised ``with (\\n A,\\n B,\\n):`` form.

SIM102 (14): scripted AST combiner for nested ``if`` (10 sites). The
  remaining 4 carry an inline ``# noqa: SIM102`` with rationale —
  combining would either change semantics (the outer body has siblings
  beyond the inner ``if``, e.g. ``cli/encrypt/inventory/__main__.py``
  where ``encrypted_value = …`` runs regardless of ``ask_confirmation``)
  or hurt readability (long literal whitelists).

RUF012 (9): annotated mutable class attributes with ``ClassVar[…]``
  and added ``from typing import ClassVar``.

SIM105 (6): ``try/except: pass`` → ``with contextlib.suppress(…):``
  with the necessary ``import contextlib`` added. Verified on
  ``utils/templating.py`` (3 occurrences in a ``finally`` block) —
  cleanup behaviour is identical.

SIM115 (4): wrapped ``tempfile.NamedTemporaryFile(..., delete=False)``
  call patterns in a ``with`` block; ``delete=False`` keeps the file
  on disk after the block, so callers' ``return f.name`` still works.

PERF402, PERF403, B007, SIM108, SIM103: 5 misc fixes (loop→list-copy,
  loop→dict-comprehension, unused-loop-var rename, ternary, return
  expression).

Verification
============
- ``ruff check .`` → All checks passed
- ``ruff format --check .`` → 894 files already formatted
- 1621 unit tests → all pass
- Integration suite: 44 baseline failures, 1 skipped (unchanged)
- Sample-audited PERF401 rewrites in ``resolver.py``, ``inventory.py``,
  ``cache/files.py``, ``ressources/__main__.py``; SIM117 in
  ``test_main.py``; SIM105 in ``utils/templating.py``; SIM102 noqa
  rationales in ``cli/encrypt/inventory/__main__.py``.

182 files changed, +993 / −960. With this and the prior strict-rule
commit the branch satisfies 11 ruff rule families end-to-end.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 26ef3ff504 chore(ruff): enable strict ruleset (E/F/I/B/UP, py311) — 2819 → 0
Adds ``[tool.ruff.lint]`` with ``select = ["E", "F", "I", "B", "UP"]``
and ``target-version = "py311"``. ``E501`` is ignored because
``ruff format`` already reflows what it can; the remaining long lines
are unsplittable string literals / URLs.

Auto-fixed (2753 issues, behavior-preserving):
- UP006/UP035: ``List[X]`` → ``list[X]``, ``Dict[X]`` → ``dict[X]``,
  ``from typing import …`` redirected where superseded by builtins.
- UP045: ``Optional[X]`` → ``X | None``.
- UP010/UP009/UP015: dropped Python-2-era pragmas (``from __future__
  import absolute_import, division, print_function``,
  ``# -*- coding: utf-8 -*-``), redundant ``open(..., "r")`` mode.
- UP004: dropped implicit ``class X(object):``.
- UP022/UP008/UP032: stdlib idiom modernization (``capture_output``,
  super-call simplification, etc.).
- B905: ``zip(...)`` → ``zip(..., strict=False)`` (preserves prior
  behavior; switching to ``strict=True`` is a separate semantic
  choice not made here).
- I001: import-block ordering.

Hand-fixed (66 issues):
- B904 × 54: appended ``from <bound>`` (when the enclosing ``except``
  binds a name) or ``from None`` (when it doesn't) so chained
  exceptions stay distinguishable from errors-during-exception-
  handling. Applied via a small AST-aware script that walked back to
  the enclosing ``except`` clause and matched the binding.
- B017 × 4: narrowed broad ``assertRaises(Exception)`` to the actual
  ``AnsibleError`` / ``AnsibleFilterError`` raised by the code under
  test.
- B023 × 2: bound captured loop variables via default args
  (``def _record(name, *, _path_real=path_real, ...)``) so each
  closure gets its own snapshot.
- B007 × 2: unused loop control variables renamed to ``_`` /
  rewritten to ``.values()``.
- UP007 × 2: ``Union[X, Y]`` → ``X | Y`` (plus dropping the now-unused
  ``from typing import Union``).
- B018 × 1: Odoo addon manifests are bare dict expressions at module
  level by design — suppressed with an inline ``# noqa: B018`` and
  rationale comment.
- UP031 × 1: printf-style format → f-string.

The 65 ``# noqa: …`` markers introduced by the auto-fixer all carry
real ruff codes (``B018``, ``E402``, ``F401``, etc.), so
``test_noqa_only_ruff_codes`` stays green.

Verification
============
- ``ruff check .`` → All checks passed
- ``ruff format --check .`` → 894 files already formatted
- ``tests.lint.repository.{test_project_root_import,
  test_no_direct_yaml_calls, test_noqa_only_ruff_codes}`` and
  ``tests.unit.utils.annotations.test_suppress`` → 20 tests OK
- 1621 unit tests → all pass
- Integration suite: 44 failures (pre-existing baseline, none from
  this change), 1 skipped.

Going forward, the new rules block regressions on E (style), F
(pyflakes), I (import order), B (likely-bug patterns), and UP
(modernization to py311) for any new code.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 9f62f9bb0e refactor(repo): clear all project-root-import lint violations + helper inlining
Eliminates the last 102 violations of test_project_root_import by
making PROJECT_ROOT in each package's __init__.py the single source
and inlining every wrapper helper.

Migrations
==========
- ~70 files: ``Path(__file__).resolve().parents[N]`` → ``from <pkg>
  import PROJECT_ROOT`` (single-expression shape, scripted).
- ~12 files: two-statement helpers (``T = Path(__file__).resolve();
  R = T.parents[N]``) and multi-line ``os.path.abspath(os.path.join(...
  os.pardir...))`` chains rewritten by a follow-up scripted pass.
- ~20 files migrated by hand for shapes the scripts couldn't safely
  rewrite (helper functions like ``_repo_root_from_test_file``,
  embedded ``os.pardir`` chains, etc.).

Helpers removed (inlined to PROJECT_ROOT)
=========================================
- All ``def repo_root_from_here() / _project_root_from_here()`` and
  same-shape variants in cli/ (``cli/deploy/development/{down,common,
  build,deploy}.py``, ``cli/meta/categories/invokable/command.py``,
  ``cli/meta/applications/resolution/{combined/repo_paths,
  dependencies/__main__,run_after/__main__}.py``).
- All zero-arg ``def <name>() -> Path: return PROJECT_ROOT`` helpers
  (utils/invokable.py, utils/roles/resource_validation.py, cli/meta/
  runtime/__init__.py, cli/meta/callorder/__main__.py, plus a dozen
  test files).
- 4 ``PROJECT_ROOT = PROJECT_ROOT`` self-assignments removed from
  test files where the class attribute became dead after migration.

Test-mock updates
=================
``patch.object(repo_paths, 'repo_root_from_here', return_value=ROOT)``
→ ``patch.object(repo_paths, 'PROJECT_ROOT', ROOT)`` (27 patches across
8 unit-test files); same shape for ``patch('utils.invokable._repo_root',
return_value=…)``.

Suppressions documented
=======================
5 files marked ``# nocheck: project-root-import`` for the catalog's
documented exemptions:
- 2 lints walking from a discovered glob match (<role>/templates/...)
  up to its role dir, NOT the repo root.
- ``cli/validate/inventory/__main__.py`` invoked as standalone
  subprocess (relative imports unavailable).
- ``plugins/filter/value_generator.py`` loaded by Ansible outside the
  project package (relative imports broken).
- ``roles/test-e2e-playwright/filter_plugins/discover_playwright_roles.py``.

Bugs surfaced and fixed in the same commit
==========================================
The migration uncovered two latent role-content violations that were
silently masked by buggy ``_repo_root()`` helpers in two integration
tests (the helpers walked upward looking for marker dirs and returned
``tests/integration/`` instead of the repo root, so the tests scanned
nothing under ``roles/`` for years):
- roles/web-app-minio: extracted 6-task OIDC block into 02_oidc.yml +
  ``include_tasks`` (the documented "Good" pattern from
  test_block_size; parsing cost is paid only when OIDC is enabled).
- roles/web-app-bluesky/tasks/01_core.yml: collapsed 3 sequential
  ``when: BLUESKY_WEB_ENABLED | bool`` tasks into one ``block:`` with
  the guard at block level (4 → 2 occurrences, under threshold).

Two semantic-bug fixes carried alongside
========================================
- cli/core/app.py: ``cli_dir`` was previously ``parents[1]`` (= cli/),
  not the repo root; rewritten to ``PROJECT_ROOT / "cli"`` to match
  the variable's intent.
- cli/make/__main__.py: pre-existing bug — ``repo_root`` was actually
  the ``cli/`` directory (so ``cli/Makefile`` was the search target,
  which never existed). Now correctly uses PROJECT_ROOT.
- scripts/lint/sort_claude_settings.sh: invokes utils/claude/
  settings_sort.py as a module (``python -m``) so its
  ``from . import PROJECT_ROOT`` resolves.

Verification
============
- ``ruff check .`` → clean
- ``tests.lint.repository.test_project_root_import`` → OK (102 → 0)
- 1621 unit tests → all pass
- Integration suite: 44 failures (baseline, pre-existing, none from
  this commit), 1 skipped

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 dbc1e925f7 fix(lint): rephrase comment to silence ruff invalid-noqa warning
The literal `# noqa` substring inside the descriptive comment, even
wrapped in backticks, was caught by ruff's noqa parser. Rephrased to
"via `nocheck`-keyword suppression markers" so ruff no longer matches.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 4d0ebc2b91 refactor(suppress): migrate # noqa: <rule> to # nocheck: <rule> repo-wide
Reason: ruff parses every `# noqa: <code>` marker as a flake8 directive
and warns on every non-flake8 rule key. Every catalog rule in
`docs/contributing/actions/testing/suppression.md` is project-specific
(kebab-case), so `# noqa:` markers fired the warning on every parse.
`# nocheck:` is the project synonym ruff ignores.

Scope:
- 41 `roles/*/meta/services.yml` + 1 task + 1 .cfg.j2 template: pure
  noqa→nocheck swap for catalog rules. Mixed flake8 markers
  (`# noqa: E402, X`) preserved verbatim.
- 5 production .py + 2 production scripts: same swap.
- All catalog-rule lints' docstrings updated; redundant "or # nocheck:"
  parentheticals collapsed to a single nocheck form.
- `utils/annotations/suppress.py`: docstring rewritten to spell out
  the new convention. Parser still accepts both keywords as synonyms.
- `docs/contributing/actions/testing/suppression.md`: convention
  rewritten to mandate `nocheck:`; missing `domain-spot` and
  `literal-protocol-lookup` rows added; "enforced by" pointer added.

New guard:
- `tests/lint/repository/test_noqa_only_ruff_codes.py`: meta-lint
  failing any `# noqa: <code>` whose codes don't match `[A-Z]+\d+`
  (real ruff/flake8 shape). Allowlists the impl, its unit test, the
  catalog page, the direct-yaml lint, and itself.
- `tests/lint/repository/test_no_direct_yaml_calls.py`: hardened to
  reject the `noqa:` form via inlined regex (no longer routed through
  `utils.annotations.suppress`).

Tangential cleanups carried in this same commit:
- `utils/cache/yaml.py`, `utils/handler/yaml.py`: 6 `direct-yaml`
  markers swapped.
- `utils/cache/base.py`: `from . import PROJECT_ROOT, ROLES_DIR` moved
  up to the import block (E402).
- `cli/create/role/__init__.py`: reordered so PROJECT_ROOT is defined
  before `__main__` is imported (also fixed a latent circular import).
- PROJECT_ROOT migration tail: 2 new `__init__.py` modules + 10 test
  files swapped from `def repo_root()` to `from . import PROJECT_ROOT`.
- ~20 ruff auto-fix removals of unused `from pathlib import Path`.

Verification:
- `ruff check .` clean.
- 23 suppression-related tests pass.
- The new lint detects all three regression shapes (project rule alone,
  mixed with real ruff code, lowercase-only).

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 3ed13ee5af refactor(repo): rename REPO_ROOT to PROJECT_ROOT everywhere
Drop the second name for the same constant. Every consumer now uses
`PROJECT_ROOT` exclusively, matching the canonical
`utils.cache.__init__.PROJECT_ROOT` source.

The rename is a word-boundary substitution applied across every
Python file in the repo, validated by `ast.parse` after each edit.
Three files additionally drop a redundant
`PROJECT_ROOT = PROJECT_ROOT` class attribute (it pointed the class-
level name at the module-level name) and inline the
`self.PROJECT_ROOT` reads to plain `PROJECT_ROOT`.

The pass also closes a latent wave-1 inconsistency: a handful of
files received the `from . import PROJECT_ROOT` shim earlier but
their consumer expressions still spelled `REPO_ROOT / "scripts" / …`,
so the shim was unused. The rename ties shim and consumer together.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 4d44ad5ad2 refactor(repo): pin PROJECT_ROOT to package __init__.py — wave 1
Migrate the simple `PROJECT_ROOT = Path(__file__).resolve().parents[N]`
shape across the repo to the new "import from `__init__.py`" rule
introduced by the `project-root-import` lint:

- `utils/cache/__init__.py` is the canonical source. `PROJECT_ROOT`
  and `ROLES_DIR` move out of `utils/cache/base.py`; `base.py`
  re-exports them for callers that still import from there.
  Internal cache modules (`files.py`, `gitignore.py`) switch to
  `from . import PROJECT_ROOT`.
- 24 packages receive a `PROJECT_ROOT` declaration in their own
  `__init__.py`, each with the parents[N] depth that resolves to
  the repo root.
- ~36 consumer files swap their local
  `PROJECT_ROOT = Path(__file__).resolve().parents[N]` for
  `from . import PROJECT_ROOT`. `ROLES_DIR` and similar derived
  paths stay local (`PROJECT_ROOT / "roles"`).

Status: this commit closes the simple-shape violations. The
multi-line `os.path.abspath(os.path.join(here, os.pardir, …))`
shape, `def repo_root()` while-loops, and `roles/<role>/filter_plugins`
files without a package container remain. The lint stays scharf and
will track each subsequent wave.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 8d8576e538 refactor(tests): reorganise meta tests + add multi-doc yaml cache
Two intertwined changes that share the same touched files:

1. Move every meta-related integration test under
   `tests/integration/roles/meta/` into one of three sibling
   sub-clusters and shorten the redundant filename prefixes:

   - `services/` — `test_services_dynamic_flags.py` →
     `test_dynamic_flags.py`, `test_services_no_self_reference.py` →
     `test_no_self_reference.py`. The `run_after` cluster moves
     under it (it is a `meta/services.yml` concern, not a
     stand-alone dependency one): `test_services_explicit.py` keeps
     its name, the rest drop the redundant prefix.
   - `variants/` — `test_variants_coverage.py` → `test_coverage.py`,
     plus the two new lints `test_auth_coverage.py` (LDAP / OIDC /
     OAuth2 matrix completeness) and `test_services_match.py`
     (every variant override key MUST exist in `services.yml`).
   - `dependencies/` — relocates the legacy
     `tests/integration/roles/dependencies/` cluster so all
     `meta/`-shaped tests live under one parent.

   Path-index constants (`Path(__file__).resolve().parents[N]`,
   `os.pardir` chains) updated for the deeper nesting.

2. Route every yaml read in the migrated tests through
   `utils.cache.yaml`. The single-doc helper `load_yaml_any` covers
   most of them; the new `load_yaml_all` mirrors `load_yaml_any` for
   the multi-doc case (`yaml.safe_load_all`) and is keyed off the
   same `(path, mtime, size)` signature, with parallel `_drop_path`
   / `_reset` housekeeping. `tests/lint/ansible/variables/
   test_vars_usage_in_yaml.py` is the first user.

READMEs cleaned up to match the new directory structure (path
crosslinks, level-up counts) and four new READMEs added for the
new sub-clusters under the `docs/` README guidelines (RFC 2119,
emojis after headlines, no em dashes, no SPOT self-labels).

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 473ecb98a7 test(lint): add unused-var suppression marker for role/group var lint
Wire the existing `noqa` / `nocheck` grammar into the role/group var
usage lint via `utils.annotations.suppress.is_suppressed_at`. A
marker in `same-or-above` position on a top-level var declaration
exempts the var from the unused-var pass — useful for vars consumed
by Python plugin code, external tools reading the rendered Ansible
inventory, or `set_fact` chains driven by computed names that the
static scan cannot follow.

The check happens at collection time (`_collect_top_level_keys`):
markered vars never enter the lint set, so the existing
"aggregated-failures" reporting stays untouched.

Document the new rule in the suppression catalog with a usage
example and an explicit "do NOT use to silence legitimate dead vars"
warning so the marker stays the escape hatch it is meant to be.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 7bc78fa0e2 test(lint): add role/group var usage lint, group variable lints under variables/
Move the existing `test_vars_usage_in_yaml.py` (task-level `vars:`
block scanner) and the new `test_role_and_group_vars_used.py`
(role/group var top-level scanner) into a dedicated
`tests/lint/ansible/variables/` subpackage. The two checks address
orthogonal scopes — task-local `vars:` blocks vs. role-local
`vars/main.yml` / `defaults/main.yml` and `group_vars/**/*.yml` — so
co-locating them documents the variable-lifecycle coverage in one
spot and leaves room for follow-up scanners (host_vars, set_fact,
register, …) without cluttering the parent directory.

The new lint:

- Extracts top-level mapping keys from every
  `roles/<role>/{vars,defaults}/main.yml` and
  `group_vars/**/*.{yml,yaml}` via the cached `load_yaml_any`,
  filtered to identifiers (`[A-Za-z_][A-Za-z0-9_]*`).
- Single project-tree walk over `.yml` / `.yaml` / `.j2` builds two
  identifier sets: tokens inside Jinja `{{ … }}` / `{% … %}` blocks,
  and identifiers in Ansible expression-bearing keys (`when:`,
  `loop:`, `with_*:`). Tokens immediately followed by `(` are
  excluded so function/macro calls do not count as variable uses.
- Routes every read through the project caches: `iter_project_files`
  (`lru_cache(maxsize=1)`), `read_text` (`lru_cache(maxsize=8192)`),
  and `load_yaml_any` (signature-keyed cache). No `yaml.safe_load*`
  bypass.
- Whitelists `ansible_python_interpreter` and `ansible_shell_executable`
  (Ansible connection-behavior keys consumed by the runner itself).
- Aggregates every undecidable variable into one
  `<file>:<line>: '<name>' is never referenced` line and fails once
  with the full list, so the reviewer sees the whole drift surface
  in a single run.

Surfaces seven existing dead declarations on first run (across
`sys-stk-front-proxy`, `test-e2e-playwright`, `web-app-discourse`,
`web-app-opentalk`, `group_vars/all/`); pruning them is left for
follow-up commits so this one stays purely the lint introduction.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 60c2de4e20 test(lint): assert every playwright.env.j2 key is consumed
New per-role lint that enforces two consistency rules between
`roles/<role>/templates/playwright.env.j2` and
`roles/<role>/files/playwright.spec.js`:

- A role that ships an env file MUST also ship a sibling spec file —
  otherwise the rendered variables go nowhere.
- Every `KEY=` declared in the env file MUST be consumed via
  `process.env.KEY` (or the bracket form) in some `.js` under the
  role's `files/` tree or under
  `roles/test-e2e-playwright/files/` (where shared helpers like
  `service-gating.js` live).

Both failure modes are aggregated into a single `self.fail` listing
all violations, so reviewers get the full drift picture in one shot.

Whitelist for keys that are legitimately not matched by a literal
`process.env.<KEY>` regex:

- `*_SERVICE_ENABLED` — `service-gating.js` reads them dynamically
  via `Object.keys(process.env)` plus a suffix strip.
- `NODE_TLS_REJECT_UNAUTHORIZED` — read by the Node runtime itself,
  not by user code.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 095d1aa152 refactor(lint): forbid uncached Path.read_text/read_bytes in tests/lint
New repository lint catches `Path.read_text(...)` and `Path.read_bytes(...)`
calls inside `tests/lint/` test code, which bypass the LRU-cached
`utils.cache.files.read_text` and re-read the same project files for
every test that scans them. Routing through the cache shares one decoded
read per file across the whole pytest session.

Per-line opt-out: `# noqa: cache-read` for genuinely out-of-cache reads
(tempdirs, synthetic fixtures, files outside the project tree).
Documented in docs/contributing/actions/testing/suppression.md alongside
the existing `project-walk` marker.

All 16 pre-existing violations in 9 lint tests retrofitted onto the
cached helper — no opt-out markers used; every site was a legitimate
project-tree read. UnicodeDecodeError added to existing OSError except
clauses where applicable (the cache helper is UTF-8 strict, replacing
the lenient `errors="replace"` of the raw call).

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 1aa1b084d5 refactor(svc-db-postgres): extract grant-schema SQL + lint inline multiline SQL
The schema-privileges block in svc-db-postgres/tasks/02_init.yml mixed
GRANT/ALTER DEFAULT PRIVILEGES SQL with Jinja interpolation in a 4-line
inline `query: |` scalar. Move the statements into
`roles/svc-db-postgres/templates/sql/grant_schema_privileges.sql.j2` and
load via `lookup('template', ...)` so the SQL stays reviewable as plain
SQL (Jinja stays only for identifier interpolation, since Postgres
prepared-statement bindings cannot substitute identifiers).

Also adds tests/lint/ansible/test_no_inline_multiline_sql.py that fails
when more than 3 SQL-leader lines (INSERT/UPDATE/SELECT/GRANT/ALTER/…)
appear in a single inline YAML scalar under roles/, tasks/, or
playbooks/. The error message points at the extraction-via-lookup
pattern so future blocks land in files/<name>.sql or
templates/sql/<name>.sql.j2 by default.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 e729b54a3b test(lint): web-app-* logout, dashboard, oidc, oauth2 integration guards
Two new lint tests under tests/lint/ansible/roles/web-app/integration/
mirroring the existing email-integration pattern:

* test_logout_dashboard.py — every web-app-* role MUST declare
  services.logout AND services.dashboard activated (truthy via
  literal `true` or the dynamic `"{{ '<role>' in group_names }}"`
  form). Per-service opt-out via `# noqa: logout` /
  `# noqa: dashboard` directly above the key, paired with both
  flags `false`. Provider role web-app-dashboard self-exempt.
* test_sso.py — every web-app-* role MUST front its login flow
  with services.oidc OR services.oauth2 activated. If oidc is
  intentionally opted out (`# noqa: oidc` above the key + both
  flags false), then oauth2 must take over. Roles with no login
  flow at all opt out of BOTH (e.g. static-content sites). Provider
  roles web-app-keycloak / web-app-oauth2-proxy self-exempt.

Co-located reorganisation: the existing email lint moves with them
into the new web-app/integration/ subfolder, dropping the redundant
`web_app_` prefix and `_integration` suffix per the new naming
scheme. test_email.py renamed via git mv so blame is preserved.

Suppression catalog (docs/contributing/actions/testing/suppression.md)
gains four new rule keys (`logout`, `dashboard`, `oidc`, `oauth2`),
all with the "line above" placement semantic identical to `email`.

services.yml changes to satisfy the new guards:

* logout opt-out (`# noqa: logout` above + both flags false) added
  to: web-app-keycloak (the IdP itself), and the minimal/no-login
  apps web-app-bridgy-fed, -chess, -hugo, -littlejs, -mig, -mini-qr,
  -navigator, -postmarks, -roulette-wheel, -socialhome, -sphinx.
* dashboard opt-out added to: web-app-bigbluebutton, -espocrm,
  -matomo, -oauth2-proxy, -phpmyadmin (with explicit shared: false
  added where missing), and full block created for -fusiondirectory.
* SSO opt-out (oidc + oauth2 both `# noqa`'d, both flags false)
  added to roles without a login flow (the same 11 minimal apps)
  and to roles where Keycloak SSO isn't wired up: -confluence, -jira,
  -magento, -matomo, -shopware. matomo's existing TODO comment about
  enabling oauth2 is preserved.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 e5de4e085a refactor(meta): wire services.<key>.{enabled,shared} dynamically via group_names
Replace literal `enabled: true / shared: true` flags across every
roles/*/meta/services.yml with a Jinja `"{{ '<role>' in group_names }}"`
form so the per-role services map becomes the single source of truth
for shared-service co-deployment, on a per-host basis. Inventory build
already runs through the templar before reaching the static `is True`
check, so runtime behaviour is unchanged; the new form only opens up
static-analysis and CLI tooling to the group-aware semantics.

Mechanism + lint:

- New integration test tests/integration/roles/meta/test_services_
  dynamic_flags.py enforces the dynamic shape per top-level service
  entry. Registered service keys must reference the registry-resolved
  provider role; covered keys (e.g. oauth2 -> web-app-keycloak via
  the new `covers:` block) reference the covering role.
- Two suppression placements documented in docs/contributing/actions/
  testing/suppression.md: per-flag inline `# nocheck: dynamic-flag`
  for databases (`enabled: true` stays literal, `shared` resolves
  dynamically) and block-level above the key for entries whose both
  flags legitimately stay literal (`css`, `javascript`, role-local
  `redis`, `recaptcha`, `hcaptcha`, role-local containers with
  `shared: false`).

Registry + helpers:

- utils/service_registry.py: new `is_explicit_truth(value)` helper
  accepts `True` literal OR a Jinja string carrying `in group_names`.
  Adopted by `resolve_service_dependency_roles_from_config`,
  `ServicesResolver._is_enabled_shared`, `test_web_app_email_
  integration`, `test_prometheus`, `test_universal_logout`, and the
  run_after-explicit guard so static analysis keeps resolving deps.
- New `covers:` field on a primary service entity declares
  transitive equivalents (web-app-keycloak.covers: [oauth2]).
  Exposed via `build_role_to_covered_keys` and
  `build_covered_key_to_role`, replacing the previously hard-coded
  `_TRANSITIVE_SERVICE_EQUIVALENTS` / `_SPECIAL_REFERENCE_ROLE` maps
  in the run_after and dynamic-flag tests.

Bulk migration:

- All 80 roles/*/meta/services.yml files migrated to the dynamic
  form. DB consumer keys (mariadb, postgres, ldap) keep
  `enabled: true  # nocheck: dynamic-flag` literal with a dynamic
  `shared`. Block-nocheck applied to css/javascript/recaptcha/
  hcaptcha and role-local containers (e.g. mailu's admin/imap/smtp/
  antispam/antivirus/oletools/webdav/fetchmail/webmail/resolver/
  front, nextcloud's talk).
- web-app-prometheus's primary entity now declares
  `provides: prometheus` + dynamic flags so the registry recognises
  it as a service provider. Consequence: tasks/01_core.yml split out
  with `- include_tasks: utils/once/flag.yml` as the first task and
  tasks/main.yml reduced to the standard run_once-guarded loader.
- Seven minimal no-login apps (web-app-hugo, -bridgy-fed, -chess,
  -littlejs, -navigator, -mini-qr, -mig) gained an explicit
  `logout: { enabled: false, shared: false }` opt-out (with
  `# nocheck: dynamic-flag` block-marker) to satisfy the universal-
  logout schema check.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 bec81768fd fix(lint): moodle resource limits + replace rglob with iter_project_files
Two failures from make test on feature/web-app-fediwall:

- test_compose_resource_limits flagged web-app-moodle nginx and cron
  services missing cpus / mem_reservation / mem_limit / pids_limit /
  min_storage. Added conservative defaults (1GB / 0.2 cpu / 128m / 256m /

- test_no_raw_project_walk flagged

  base.rglob("*"). Route through utils.cache.files.iter_project_files

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 60036a9249 test(lint): forbid raw project-tree walks in tests; route through utils.cache.files
Add tests/lint/repository/test_no_raw_project_walk.py: AST-walks every
.py file under tests/ and flags call expressions matching the forbidden
shapes — `<x>.rglob(...)`, `os.walk(...)`, `glob.glob(...)` — including
their aliased imports. The lint blocks any NEW raw walk from sneaking
in; pre-existing offenders are migrated below.

Background
==========
Pytest runs every test in one process. A raw walk over the repo tree
re-iterates the same paths and re-stats the same inodes for every test
that needs them, so the cost scales linearly with the number of lint /
integration tests doing project scans. Routing every walk through
`utils.cache.files.iter_project_files(...)` (or
`iter_project_files_with_content(...)`, `iter_non_ignored_files(...)`,
`read_text(...)`) shares one filesystem walk + one read per file
across the whole pytest session. See docs/agents/action/testing.md.

Migration
=========
Refactored to the cached helpers (broad project-tree walks):

  Lint
    tests/lint/ansible/test_no_literal_no_log.py
    tests/lint/ansible/test_no_sh_lc_pipefail.py
    tests/lint/ansible/test_run_once_tags.py

    tests/lint/filesystem/test_python_shebangs.py
    tests/lint/repository/test_folder_item_limit.py
    tests/lint/repository/test_markdown_links.py
    tests/lint/repository/test_role_meta_layout.py
    tests/lint/repository/test_todo_transparency.py

  Integration / external / unit
    tests/integration/compose/test_no_raw_docker.py
    tests/integration/config/test_non_empty.py
    tests/integration/roles/includes/test_existence.py
    tests/integration/vars/test_facts_not_overridden.py
    tests/integration/workflows/test_dependabot_coverage.py
    tests/external/repository/test_urls_reachable.py
    tests/unit/cli/deploy/development/test_inventory_vars_file_spot.py

Tagged `# noqa: project-walk` (legacy; future commits migrate them
incrementally — the lint pinpoints each offender and the fail message
points at the cached helpers and explains when noqa is appropriate):

  ~30 further test files (small per-role globs, scripts/utils subtree
  scans, dynamic Jinja-driven globs that need richer refactors).

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 dc334aa7ac refactor(lint,roles): tighten compose-resource-limits lint and fix corpus
Reworks tests/lint/ansible/roles/test_compose_resource_limits.py from
warn-only-on-every-role to a strict failure scoped to actual
compose-service declarations:

  1. Only roles that ship a `templates/compose.yml.j2` are scanned.
     Non-Docker roles (`desk-*`, `dev-*`, `drv-*`, `pkgmgr*`,
     `sys-*`, …) entered the warning channel for unrelated
     `meta/services.yml` entries even though their entries never map
     to real containers; that whole class of warnings disappears.
  2. Inside the scanned roles, only the **self-declared** services
     are linted: entries that carry substantive Docker config
     (`image`/`build`/`ports`/`volumes`/`command`/`environment`/...)
     OR a primary entity backed by a `files/Dockerfile` /
     `templates/Dockerfile.j2`. Aliases (entries with
     `canonical: <primary>`) and pure consumer markers
     (`enabled+shared` only — pulling a service in from another role)
     are skipped because the resource limits live on the **provider's**
     declaration, not on the marker.
  3. Failures are hard `self.fail` again so regressions block CI.

Concretely: `web-app-mailu/meta/services.yml.{mailu,email}` MUST set
all five resource keys; another role that imports email via
`services.email.enabled+shared: true` is a marker and is exempt.

Adds the missing keys (`min_storage`, `cpus`, `mem_reservation`,
`mem_limit`, `pids_limit`) to every self-declared service across 36
roles — 232 entries total — using a name-based heuristic that buckets
services into light / standard / heavy budgets. Numbers are
conservative middle-ground budgets; operators can tune individual
services later. Also repositions four `# noqa: shared` markers
(bookwyrm/worker, mailu/redis, shopware/redis, shopware/opensearch)
that the round-trip ruamel.yaml dump shifted into the wrong service
block.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 c84e5ee4a9 refactor(web-svc-legal,web-svc-html): consume html via service registry
Drops the meta/main.yml meta-dependency from web-svc-legal on
web-svc-html and replaces it with the variant-aware service-registry
mechanism: web-svc-html marks its primary entity `shared: true;
enabled: false` so the registry resolves the `html` key, and
web-svc-legal declares `services.html.enabled: true; shared: true` in
its own meta/services.yml so the deploy planner pulls web-svc-html in
on demand instead of unconditionally on every web-svc-legal deploy.

To pass the service-role schema check this also splits
web-svc-html/tasks/main.yml into a thin wrapper that loads
tasks/01_core.yml under a `run_once_web_svc_html`-guard.

Adds tests/lint/ansible/roles/test_web_role_no_web_dependency.py: a
broad guard that fails if any `web-*` role declares another `web-*`
role in `meta/main.yml.dependencies`. The fix message points the
contributor at the service-registry pattern (`shared: true` + the
`run_once` schema follow-ups, plus the consumer-side
`services.<X>.enabled: true; shared: true`). The web-svc-legal /
web-svc-html cleanup above is exactly the migration this lint walks
new contributors through.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 623035618c refactor(cache): route every yaml call in tests/ through utils.cache.yaml
Stops every direct `yaml.safe_load`/`safe_load_all`/`safe_dump`/`dump`
call across the test corpus from re-parsing files the production cache
already holds. Each migrated test loads role meta, group_vars, inventory
fixtures, etc. through the shared cache, so a single `make test` run
parses every YAML file at most once across all suites.

Cache module changes (utils/cache/yaml.py):
  - Unify single- and multi-doc cache: one `_CACHE: Dict[sig, list]`
    holding the `safe_load_all` payload. Single-doc helpers
    (load_yaml / load_yaml_any) unwrap docs[0] and raise on >1
    document, preserving the old strict semantics. A file consumed
    both as single-doc and multi-doc is now parsed exactly once.
  - Add load_yaml_all (path-cached) and load_yaml_all_str (string,
    no cache) so multi-doc consumers no longer need a direct
    `yaml.safe_load_all` plus a separate file read.
  - dump_yaml now accepts any safe-dumpable structure (dict, list,
    scalar) so test fixtures writing list-of-tasks YAML can use it.

Lint guard (tests/lint/repository/test_no_direct_yaml_calls.py):
  - Extend the scanned tree to include `tests/` so future test code
    is forced through the cache, with the existing
    `# noqa: direct-yaml` per-call opt-out for genuine raw-yaml
    fixture needs.

Test corpus:
  - 89 test files migrated to load_yaml / load_yaml_any /
    load_yaml_str / load_yaml_all / load_yaml_all_str / dump_yaml /
    dump_yaml_str. No `# noqa` shortcuts.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 9adb4ec635 test(lint): forbid lookup('config', ...) | default(X) dead-code pattern
The project's `config` lookup (plugins/lookup/config.py) is strict by
default: a 2-term call `lookup('config', app, path)` raises AnsibleError
on a missing key. The Jinja `| default(...)` filter only applies to
Jinja `Undefined` values, which the lookup never produces — it either
returns a value or raises. Every `lookup('config', a, b) | default(X)`
in the tree is therefore dead code; the operator-visible behaviour is
"crash on missing key" no matter what `X` is.

Add a line-local lint that paren-walks each `lookup('config', ...)`
call to count its top-level args. When the call has exactly 2 commas
(i.e. no plugin-level default) and is followed by `| default(...)`
later on the same line, the test fails with the recommended fix:
pass the fallback as the 3rd lookup argument so the strict-mode
short-circuit is disabled and the default actually applies.

Fix the two existing occurrences:
  - roles/web-app-moodle/vars/main.yml:85 (services.ldap.enabled)
  - roles/web-app-matrix/templates/compose.yml.j2:86
    (credentials.chatgpt_bridge_access_token)

kevinveenbirkenbach 837d0c5335 test(suppression): unify # noqa / # nocheck marker grammar
Introduce a single grammar for per-line, per-block, and per-file

  - tests/lint/ansible/test_run_once_tags.py +
    tests/integration/roles/run_once/test_schema.py (rules: run-once,
    run-once-suffix)

Marker migration
  12 role tasks/main.yml files: `# run_once_<key>: deactivated`
  -> `# nocheck: run-once`. roles/web-app-suitecrm/meta/services.yml
  drops a malformed inline `noqa: intentional legacy pin` from a TODO
  comment so the new parser does not pick it up as a stray rule.

Caching wins
  Test files that previously loaded YAML / read files via raw
  yaml.safe_load + Path.read_text now route through utils.cache.yaml
  (load_yaml_any / load_yaml_str) and utils.cache.files.read_text:
    - test_service_shared_consistency.py
    - test_web_app_email_integration.py
    - tests/integration/roles/run_once/test_schema.py
    - utils/docker/version_updater.py
  This both speeds up repeated reads and stays consistent with the
  direct-yaml lint policy.

Documentation
  New SPOT page at docs/contributing/actions/testing/suppression.md
  with grammar, position semantics, the catalog of rules, examples,
  and an "adding a new rule" checklist. lint.md and external.md drop
  their per-rule tables and link to the new page. All touched docs
  conform to docs/contributing/documentation.md (no em-dash thought
  breaks, no SPOT self-labels, RFC-2119 keywords used consistently).

Settings sort tooling
  scripts/lint/sort_claude_settings.sh wraps utils/claude/settings_sort.py
  and is wired into scripts/lint/autoformat.sh. The tooling fixes the
  ASCII-ascending requirement enforced by
  tests/lint/repository/test_claude_settings_sorted.py; the test's
  failure message now points operators at the script. .claude/settings.json
  is committed in sorted form.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 b9353118d1 fix(meta): close req-008 sweep gaps — lost suppressions, silent test breakage, 1 prod bug
The req-008/009/010 refactor's mechanical migration left several gaps
the test suite could not catch because the test suite itself was
silently broken in spots. Audit-and-fix pass closes those.

1. Production bug: backup discovery filter
==========================================
roles/sys-ctl-bkp-docker-2-loc/filter_plugins/find_dock_val_by_bkp_entr.py
still read `app.compose.services` from the materialised application
payload. After req-008 the file root IS the services map (no
`compose.services` envelope), so the filter walked an empty dict and
silently returned `[]` for every backup discovery call. Rerouted to
the new `app.services` path. Test fixtures updated to match.

2. External test broken by source_file mismatch
===============================================
tests/external/docker/test_image_versions.py:61 filtered for
`ref.source_file == "config/main.yml"`, but
utils/docker/image/discovery emits `meta/services.yml` since req-008.
The filter rejected every candidate → `entries == []` →
`self.assertTrue(entries)` failed. Switched the filter to the new path.

3. Five lint/integration tests silently iterating empty dicts
=============================================================
The following tests still read `cfg.get("compose").get("services")`
(the legacy compose-wrapper path). After req-008 every meta/services.yml
file root IS the services map, so these tests have been iterating
empty dicts and quietly passing without checking anything:

* tests/lint/ansible/test_service_shared_consistency.py:72
* tests/integration/backups/test_enabled.py:33
* tests/integration/backups/test_no_stop_required.py:35
* tests/integration/docker/test_services_image_version_valid.py:28
* tests/integration/oauth2_oidc/test_mutual_exclusive.py:26

All five rerouted to the file-root convention. test_service_shared_consistency
immediately surfaced 24 missing `# noqa: shared` markers (see below).

4. Lost suppression markers (51 total)
======================================
The migration script (tasks/utils/migrate_meta_layout.py) used
ruamel.yaml round-trip which preserved most comments but lost
trailing-comment markers on inline list items (a known ruamel edge
case). Restored verbatim from main:

* 13 `# nocheck: url` markers on meta/server.yml CSP-whitelist entries
  (web-app-bluesky, web-app-flowise, web-app-matomo, web-svc-onlyoffice).
  These cover CDN root URLs that legitimately return 404 for the bare
  domain (Google Fonts, Matomo CDN, BlueSky API endpoint).
* 1 `# nocheck: docker-version` on web-app-moodle/meta/services.yml
  (LTS pin for OIDC compatibility).
* 20 `# noqa: shared` markers on meta/services.yml — only the markers
  that are still NEEDED. Initial restoration mirrored all 24 markers
  from main, but 4 of them turned out redundant against the current
  shape: bigbluebutton/postgres, bookwyrm/postgres, discourse/postgres,
  magento/mariadb already declare `shared:` (true or false), so the
  lint rule does not fire and the marker is dead weight. Skipped them.
* 13 `# noqa: email` markers on meta/services.yml — every covered
  `email:` block has `{enabled: false, shared: false}`, exactly the
  pattern the email-integration lint expects to suppress.

5. Test-fixture cleanups for backwards-compat clarity
=====================================================
Several unit tests still wrapped synthetic application payloads in
`{"compose": {"services": {...}}}`. Harmless because the production
code paths under test were already migrated, but misleading for future
contributors. Reshaped to match the post-req-008 file-root
convention:

* tests/unit/plugins/filter/test_node_autosize.py
* tests/unit/plugins/filter/test_docker_service_enabled.py
* tests/unit/utils/manager/test_inventory_manager.py (5 occurrences)
* tests/unit/cli/deploy/development/test_inventory.py
* tests/unit/roles/sys-ctl-bkp-docker-2-loc/filter_plugins/test_find_dock_val_by_bkp_entr.py

Validation
==========
* Unit:        1572 passed.
* Lint:        56 passed.
* Integration: 161 passed (1 skipped).

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 b3de2a4d7c refactor(meta): land req-011 meta/info.yml + utils/cache cleanup
req-011 — descriptive role-level metadata
  * Move logo / homepage / video / display out of
    meta/main.yml.galaxy_info into a new project-owned
    roles/<role>/meta/info.yml (file-root convention, no `info:` wrapper).
  * 78 role meta/main.yml files migrated via ruamel round-trip
    (key-order / quoting / inline-comments preserved). Roles with none
    of the four fields are left untouched (no empty info.yml created).
  * web-app-dashboard/lookup_plugins/docker_cards.py reads logo +
    display from meta/info.yml; description / galaxy_tags continue to
    come from galaxy_info (Galaxy-spec fields).
  * docker_cards.py now routes ALL its file reads through the
    process-wide caches: load_yaml_any for vars/main.yml,
    meta/main.yml, meta/info.yml; read_text from utils.cache.files for
    README.md. The orphan `import yaml` is gone.

New utils/cache/files (renamed from tests/utils/fs)
  * The process-wide filesystem cache (read_text, iter_project_files,
    iter_project_files_with_content, _all_project_files) is not
    test-specific; it now lives under utils/cache/files.py next to the
    other process-wide caches. 34 consumer imports rewritten across
    tests/ and docs/. The empty tests/utils/ package is removed.
  * New unit suite tests/unit/utils/cache/test_files.py — 12 cases
    covering read_text, iter_project_files (skip-dirs, extensions,
    exclude_tests, exclude_dirs, walk-cache invariants), the combined
    iterator, non-UTF-8 silent skip, and _reset.

utils/cache redundancy cleanup
  * applications.py + users.py + cli/create/inventory/services_disabler.py
    drop their direct yaml.safe_load calls and their private
    _load_yaml_mapping/_load_yaml_variant_list copies; everything routes
    through utils.cache.yaml.load_yaml / load_yaml_any. The dead
    utils.cache.base._load_yaml_mapping is removed.
  * users.py:_load_store_users (tokens.yml read) likewise migrated.
  * _load_yaml_variant_list moves out of base.py to applications.py
    (its only consumer) and is renamed _load_variants_overrides — also
    routes through the cached loader now.
  * utils.cache.yaml._reset_cache_for_tests is renamed _reset (kept as
    alias) for parity with the per-domain reset helpers.
  * utils.cache.files grows a _reset() that clears its two LRU caches.
  * utils.cache.__init__._reset_cache_for_tests now orchestrates ALL
    six caches (applications, users, domains, base, yaml, files) so
    tests get clean state across cache layers — needed because
    applications/users now share the yaml cache and would otherwise
    serve stale parses across reset boundaries.
  * utils.cache.files imports PROJECT_ROOT from base instead of
    redefining it.
  * tests/unit/utils/cache/test_data.py + test_base.py: obsolete
    TestLoadYamlMapping / TestLoadYamlVariantList classes deleted
    (covered by test_yaml.py + test_variants.py).
  * README.md updated for the new module list (files, yaml) and the
    six-module orchestrator.

Galaxy schema lint
  * tests/lint/repository/test_role_meta_main_galaxy_schema.py: split
    galaxy_info field requirements into hard-required {author,
    description, license} and soft-recommended {min_ansible_version,
    platforms}. Soft-recommended -> emit a GitHub Actions ::warning::
    annotation via utils.annotations.message.warning (titled
    "meta/main.yml galaxy_info" with file= pointing at the offender),
    no test failure. Rationale: min_ansible_version + platforms are
    only enforced by Galaxy when *publishing*, which Infinito.Nexus
    does not do.
  * Galaxy lint goes green (was 226 offenders before req-011 +
    license_url/repository/documentation strip; was 62 before this
    relaxation; now 0 hard offenders, 62 soft warnings).
  * roles/svc-opt-keyboard-color/meta/main.yml: backfill `license`
    (only role missing the hard-required field).

New lint
  * tests/lint/repository/test_role_meta_info.py — enforces meta/info.yml
    file-root convention, the four-field allowlist (logo, homepage,
    video, display), and shape (logo.class string, homepage/video
    non-empty strings, display bool). Also fails if any
    meta/main.yml.galaxy_info still carries one of the four migrated
    fields.

Docs
  * docs/contributing/design/services/layout.md: new section
    "Descriptive Role-Level Metadata — meta/info.yml" with allowed-
    fields table, optionality rule, materialised path, and consumer
    note. File-Layout table grows the meta/info.yml row;
    meta/main.yml row gets the explicit "no logo/homepage/video/display"
    note. req-011 added to header and Related Pages.
  * utils/cache/README.md: files.py + yaml.py rows added; six-module
    reset orchestrator documented.

Validation
  * Unit:        1573 passed.
  * Lint:        55 passed.
  * Integration: 161 passed (1 skipped) via pre-commit hook.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 ed04dad5d5 refactor(meta): land req-008/009/010 role-meta layout/networks/ports/run_after migration
Single atomic landing for three back-to-back role-meta refactor requirements
(see docs/requirements/008-role-meta-layout.md, 009-per-role-networks-and-ports.md,
010-role-meta-runafter-lifecycle-migration.md).

req-008 — role meta layout
  * Move every role's metadata under meta/<topic>.yml with file-root
    convention (no wrapping key matching the basename):
      - schema/main.yml + config/main.yml.credentials → meta/schema.yml
      - users/main.yml                                → meta/users.yml
      - config/main.yml.server                        → meta/server.yml
      - config/main.yml.rbac                          → meta/rbac.yml
      - config/main.yml.compose.services + every other top-level key
        of config/main.yml inlined under <entity>.<key>
                                                      → meta/services.yml
      - config/main.yml.compose.volumes               → meta/volumes.yml
  * Drop the legacy schema/, users/, config/ directories from every role.
  * meta/schema.yml: support nested credential keys, optional `default:`
    field (Jinja literal, not rendered/validated/regenerated), implicit
    `algorithm: plain`.
  * Materialised paths drop the `compose.` prefix:
      compose.services.<e>.<…> → services.<e>.<…>
      compose.volumes.<k>      → volumes.<k>
      <former-top-level>.<…>   → services.<entity_name>.<former-top-level>.<…>
  * Update every Python consumer (utils/cache, utils/manager, utils/applications,
    plugins/lookup, plugins/filter, cli/*) plus every Jinja template, vars/*.yml
    and task file to the new paths.
  * No legacy fallback. Repository-wide grep for `compose.services.` /
    `compose.volumes.` / `schema/main.yml` / `users/main.yml` / `config/main.yml`
    is empty outside docs/requirements/ and tasks/utils/migrate_meta_layout.py.
  * Add tests/lint/repository/test_role_meta_layout.py guarding against the
    old paths returning, and an explicit lint guard that meta/variants.yml
    files do not carry a `compose:` wrapper.

req-009 — per-role networks/ports
  * Move group_vars/all/08_networks.yml.defaults_networks.local.<role>.{subnet,
    dns_resolver} into roles/<role>/meta/server.yml.networks.local.{subnet,
    dns_resolver}.
  * Delete group_vars/all/09_ports.yml entirely; ports now live on the
    service entity that exposes them at
    roles/<role>/meta/services.yml.<entity>.ports.{inter,local,public}.
  * Rename + int-cast every former top-level `services.<entity>.port`
    field to `services.<entity>.ports.inter` (single int).
  * Always-category-keyed maps for ports.local / ports.public; relay
    spans use {start, end} integers.
  * Add PORT_BANDS map to group_vars/all/08_networks.yml — single source
    of truth for the per-<scope>.<category> band ranges, consumed by both
    the new CLI helpers and the lint test.
  * New CLI helpers (cli meta ports suggest, cli meta networks suggest)
    walk the live role tree gap-first then increment-fallback, with
    deterministic output and non-zero exit on capacity overflow.
  * cli create role consumes both helpers when scaffolding a new role.
  * Lint extensions: bare-int port shape rejection, host-bound port
    collision check (single ints + relay span integers, inter excluded),
    band-membership check with documented allow-list for the legacy
    web-app-bigbluebutton.bigbluebutton.local.http: 48087 entry.

req-010 — run_after / lifecycle migration
  * Move galaxy_info.run_after and galaxy_info.lifecycle out of
    meta/main.yml into meta/services.yml.<primary_entity>.{run_after,
    lifecycle}; <primary_entity> is the value returned by
    get_entity_name(role_name).
  * For multi-entity roles whose primary entity has no compose service
    (web-app-bluesky → bluesky, web-app-matrix → matrix, desk/dev/drv/
    gen roles), create a dedicated metadata-only top-level entry under
    <primary_entity>.
  * Introduce utils/roles/meta_lookup.py with get_role_run_after /
    get_role_lifecycle that resolve <primary_entity> once and read from
    meta/services.yml; degrade gracefully when meta/services.yml is
    absent OR the field is absent; raise MetaServicesShapeError when the
    file exists but is malformed.
  * Update every consumer (utils/service_registry, utils/invokable,
    cli/meta/applications/resolution/run_after/__main__, cli/meta/roles/
    lifecycle_filter/__main__, cli/meta/applications/resolution/combined,
    cli/build/{tree,graph,role_include}, cli/deploy/development/{common,
    init,deps,deploy}, plugins/filter/canonical_domains_map, etc.) to
    use the helper.
  * Lint guards: no run_after/lifecycle in meta/main.yml; lifecycle
    values restricted to {planned,pre-alpha,alpha,beta,stable,deprecated};
    run_after/lifecycle never on a non-primary entity; empty run_after
    lists rejected.

Also folded into this change set
  * services_disabler now writes `services.<svc>.{enabled,shared}` into
    host_vars instead of the old `compose.services.<svc>.{...}` path; the
    discover/find pair walks meta/services.yml and only treats entries
    carrying enabled/shared/provides as provider declarations (so
    metadata-only entries from req-010 do not create spurious provider
    rows).
  * service_registry skips `run_after` deps whose target was filtered
    out via SERVICES_DISABLED instead of failing the whole load.
  * cli/mirror/resolver and cli/create/inventory/mirror_overrides emit/
    consume the new applications.<role>.services.<svc>.image shape
    (mirror.md updated to match).
  * utils/domains/list.build_applications_from_roles now reads
    meta/server.yml directly (it had been silently returning {} since
    config/main.yml stopped existing).
  * utils/roles/resource_validation.filter_roles_by_min_storage reads
    meta/services.yml.<entity>.min_storage instead of the legacy
    compose.services path.
  * web-app-bluesky pre-clones the social-app build context BEFORE
    sys-svc-compose so the build context is on disk by the time
    sys-stk-front-proxy/tasks/main.yml flushes the docker build handler.
  * 4 meta/variants.yml files (svc-ai-ollama, web-app-phpmyadmin,
    web-app-wordpress, web-app-keycloak) lose their `compose: services:`
    wrapper so deep-merge over meta/services.yml lands on the new
    file-root shape.

Validation
  * Unit tests:        1571 passed.
  * Lint tests:        50 passed.
  * Integration tests: 161 passed (1 skipped).
  * Full-cycle fresh-purged-apps deploy succeeded for the 8-app validation
    set: web-app-{nextcloud,wordpress,yourls,bigbluebutton,bluesky,gitea,

kevinveenbirkenbach 3fdbe8d9e2 fix(web-app-joomla): use bash for CLI install argv (dash lacks pipefail)
The retry-loop install task introduced in f7d32109e used
`argv: [sh, -lc, …]` with `set -o pipefail` in the body. On Debian/Ubuntu
CI runners `/bin/sh` is dash, which aborts with
`sh: 1: set: Illegal option -o pipefail`, so all 5 retries die on the
very first line and the Joomla deploy fails.

Switch argv[0] to `bash` so the task works on every distro and document
the constraint inline. Regression is tracked in infinito-nexus/core#194;
the retry-loop itself was the fix for #186.

Add tests/lint/ansible/test_no_sh_pipefail_in_ansible_tasks.py guarding
the three ways this class of bug can come back:

  * `command` with `argv: […, sh, -lc, body_with_pipefail]`
  * `args.executable` set to any non-bash shell
  * removal of the global `ansible_shell_executable: /bin/bash` default
    from group_vars/all/00_general.yml

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 e6eb5115bf test(utils/fs): extend cache coverage + invert filters/test_usage scan
Second-wave rollout of tests/utils/fs:

- 6 tests switched to the shared content cache via read_text() (replacing
  raw open()/Path.read_text()): roles/includes/test_existence,
  roles/dependencies/test_unnecessary, vars/test_facts_not_overridden,
  services/test_sys_requires_id, lint/ansible/roles/
  test_service_core_first_task_run_once, lint/ansible/roles/
  test_compose_resource_limits.

- 4 unit-lookup tests moved their fixture root from <repo>/.tmp_test_* to
  tempfile.TemporaryDirectory() so transient files land in /tmp (matching
  the AGENTS.md rule). Manual recursive-delete teardowns removed —
  TemporaryDirectory.cleanup() covers that path safely.

- filters/test_usage.py: algorithmic inversion. Old loop was
  O(N_filters × M_files × 4_regex); new scan walks files once, applies two
  master-alternation regexes (bare `| name` and `{% filter name %}`) plus
  one combined regex over all Python callables, and records hits per filter
  via the capture group. The two dropped Jinja patterns were strict
  subsets of the bare pattern, so the hit set is identical — only the
  complexity changes (3.6s → 0.2s, ~18x).

- docs/agents/action/testing.md: new "Filesystem Scans — Use the Shared
  Cache" section codifies the rule so future agent-written tests route
  through tests.utils.fs.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 9c8cc1ddcb test(utils/fs): cache project file walks + contents across test run
Adds tests/utils/fs.py with process-level @lru_cache for both the
project-wide os.walk and per-file read_text(), then migrates 26 tests
(24 modified + 2 new) that previously re-walked/re-read the tree
independently to share one cached pass.

Headline win: tests/integration/jinja/test_variable_usage.py drops from
~26s to ~1.3s (≈19x), jinja cluster as a whole ~14x. Other migrated
tests benefit from the shared content cache when the same file is read
by multiple scans in one pytest run.

Non-caching logic changes (kept intentionally):
- test_variable_usage.py: added `if varname not in content: continue`
  fast-path before the line loop (pure short-circuit, identical result).
- test_test_file_naming.py: exempt tests/utils/ from the test_*.py
  prefix rule so the new shared helpers don't trip the lint.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 f0475e393f test(lint): forbid literal no_log: true in Ansible YAML
Adds a lint test that scans roles/, tasks/, playbooks/ for
`no_log: true` (and the YAML-truthy variants `yes`/`on`, all cases).
Hard-coded `no_log: true` blocks operators from surfacing masked
values when diagnosing a failing task — the fix is to route every
no_log through `MASK_CREDENTIALS_IN_LOGS`, which defaults to true
but can be flipped for a single play with
`-e MASK_CREDENTIALS_IN_LOGS=false`.

Failure message points at the exact file:line and shows the
required replacement form:

    no_log: "{{ MASK_CREDENTIALS_IN_LOGS | bool }}"

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 1014bc51d3 test(email): lint warning for web-apps without email integration
Add tests/lint/ansible/roles/test_web_app_email_integration.py which:

- Emits a GHA warning annotation (via utils.annotations.message) for
  each web-app-* role that does not call lookup('email', application_id)
  and does not carry an explicit opt-out block.
- Hard-fails when a role DOES call the email lookup but its
  compose.services.email is missing enabled: true or shared: true.
- Silencer format: `# noqa: email` on the line directly above an
  `email:` block under compose.services with enabled: false + shared: false.

Opt out 13 roles that have no user-facing mail surface:
bridgy-fed, chess, dashboard, littlejs, mig, mini-qr, navigator,

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 a8d8cb9d8d test(lint/roles): warn on missing compose-service resource limits
Adds a warn-only lint that scans each role's primary compose service and
emits one GitHub Actions `::warning` annotation per missing key in
(min_storage, cpus, mem_reservation, mem_limit, pids_limit). The test
fails once no annotations remain, signalling that the rule should be
flipped from warn-only to strict mode.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.7 02da33b0a5 refactor(tests): reorganize into topical sub-clusters and consolidate linting
Under tests/integration/roles/ introduce four sub-clusters (meta/,
dependencies/, applications/, run_once/) plus nested dependencies/run_after/
and applications/id/. Fold tests/integration/application_id/ into
roles/applications/id/ and tests/integration/run_once/ into roles/run_once/.
Pull four application-related tests out of tests/integration/ into
roles/applications/, and test_run_after_references.py into the run_after/
sub-cluster.

Consolidate tests/integration/linting/ into tests/lint/{ansible,filesystem,
repository}/, so repository-wide lint checks now run under make test-lint
rather than make test-integration.

Each new cluster ships a README.md and __init__.py; cross-referencing
READMEs (categories, ports, services, roles, applications) are updated to
point at the new paths. Path depths inside moved tests and one hardcoded
ignore path in test_domain.py are adjusted accordingly. No behavior change;
all 32 lint tests and every moved cluster pass locally.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Sonnet 4.6 1bcb7cfbb0 Merge branch 'main' into feature/service-refactoring
Resolve conflicts:
- docs/agents/action/iteration.md: keep both new bullets (SERVICES_DISABLED
  proposal + make test requirement)
- docs/contributing/design/services.md: deleted (renamed to
  docs/contributing/code/services.md in this branch)
- group_vars/all/20_services.yml: keep deletion from this branch (req-001)
- tests/lint/ansible/roles/test_service_core_first_task_run_once.py:
  use build_service_registry_from_roles_dir (req-001) with repo_root()
  from main for robust path resolution

Fix broken relative links caused by rename and deletion of files:
- docs/contributing/design/architecture.md: services.md → ../code/services.md
- docs/contributing/design/exceptions.md: load_frontend_service.yml →
  load_service.yml
- docs/requirements/001-service-registry-refactoring.md: fix paths for
  unit.md, integration.md, principles.md, documentation.md, AGENTS.md
