With env.development and env/ci.env both gone, env/default.env was the
last inhabitant of the directory. Hoisting it to the repo root removes
the empty-shell indirection: the SPOT is now [default.env](default.env),
sitting next to .env (its generated companion) and other repo-root
configuration artefacts like compose.yml, Dockerfile, and Makefile.
Path updates land in:
- generator: cli/meta/env/__main__.py (REPO_ROOT / "default.env")
- workflow: .github/workflows/test-install-make.yml (awk reads from
default.env, error message updated in lockstep)
- lint tests: test_used_keys_declared.py and test_infinito_prefix.py
switched from globbing env/*.env to targeting default.env directly;
test_default_env_keys_handled.py points at the new path
- drift test: test_inventory_vars_file_spot.py whitelist + STATIC_ENV
- smoke test: tests/integration/meta/env/test_dotenv_generator.py
STATIC_ENV + every docstring/error message
Doc-string and prose references in utils/env/*, scripts/*,
cli/administration/deploy/development/{common,coredns}.py,
Makefile, Dockerfile, and every doc page that mentioned env/default.env
are rewritten in the same pass so future readers see one path.

The four ci.env keys (INFINITO_DNS_IP, INFINITO_DOMAIN, INFINITO_DOMAIN_RE,
INFINITO_IP4) were only honored by docker compose --env-file, so processes
that sourced .env via load.sh saw INFINITO_IP4 as unset. As a result
networks.internet.ip4 in the Ansible playbook fell through to the
127.0.0.1 default and the DinD DNS-check handler failed on the deploy
server matrix.
Moving the defaults into env/default.env makes them flow through the same
.env / load.sh / os.environ chain as every other INFINITO_* key, so
\${INFINITO_IP4} in compose.yml, lookup('env', 'INFINITO_IP4') in
group_vars, and envsubst over the CoreDNS Corefile template all see the
same value deterministically.
Side fix: utils/env/parser.py now undoes the writer's \\\\/\\" escaping for
quoted values, closing a round-trip gap that surfaced once
INFINITO_DOMAIN_RE (the only value containing a literal backslash) started
flowing through the generator.
All --env-file env/ci.env call sites (compose.py, down.py, install/lint/
test wrappers, resolve scripts, test-dns workflow + script) are removed.
coredns.py now reads .env via parse_static_env, docs and unit/integration
tests follow.

Replace 8 bash env modules with a single Python generator
(cli.meta.env) that materialises env/static.env + runtime context
into a gitignored .env. Each variable lives in its own handler
under utils/env/handlers/; defaults carry inline one-line `# ...`
comments.
Rename to the INFINITO_* schema:
- workflow inputs: APPS, SERVICES_DISABLED, CMD, DEBUG, WHITELIST,
BUNDLES, FULL_CYCLE, VARIANT, RUN_FLAGS, LIMIT_HOST, PARALLEL
- inventory: INVENTORY_DIR / INVENTORY_FILE / HOST_VARS_FILE,
PW_FILE -> INVENTORY_PASSWORD_FILE
- venv: VENV_BASE / VENV_FALLBACK / VENV_NAME
- new SPOT defaults: COMPILE_SILENCE, CONTAINER_NO_CA,
WAIT_HEALTH_TIMEOUT_S, PACKAGE_CACHE_FRONTEND_INIT_IMAGE,
promoted IMAGE_TAG from GHA-only to general passthrough
compose.yml hardening:
- inline \${VAR:-default} removed; strict \${VAR:?...} everywhere
- new integration lint blocks regressions
Tooling:
- scripts/install/all.sh owns the stamp-file install logic
(Makefile target delegates)
- scripts/meta/env/load.sh is the single shell entry point;
8 bash modules deleted
- new shell lint: no INFINITO_* defaults outside env/static.env
Tests:
- 93 new unit tests for utils/env/{builder,parser,runtime,writer}
- restructure tests/lint into repository/ (file-content rules) vs
filesystem/{shell,python,env}/ (filesystem-shape rules)
- drift + smoke integration tests against the generator
Docs:
- variables.md is now a pointer; per-variable docs live next to
the key in env/static.env / env/ci.env
- compose.yml.md drops the Default column

Follow-up to d002796a5. The formula `infinito_nexus_${INFINITO_DISTRO}` is
now defined in exactly one place — `scripts/meta/env/defaults.sh:18`,
exported outside the load-once guard so it tracks INFINITO_DISTRO across
matrix iterations (caller re-sources defaults.sh after distro changes).
Every other site reads INFINITO_CONTAINER strictly from env; nothing
re-derives the formula, no lazy/colon-dash fallbacks, no per-call defaults.
Production code aligned:
- cli/deploy/development/common.py: add resolve_container() (strict env
reader, raises SystemExit on unset). make_compose() calls it as an
early-fail guard so a missing defaults.sh source surfaces here instead
of as a confusing compose.yml interpolation error later.
- cli/deploy/development/deploy.py: stop re-deriving from compose.distro;
use resolve_container().
- compose.yml: container_name reads ${INFINITO_CONTAINER:?...} strictly,
so callers that bypass defaults.sh fail fast with a clear hint.
- scripts/meta/resolve/image/local.sh: drop ${INFINITO_DISTRO:-debian}
fallback; require INFINITO_DISTRO via :? error.
- scripts/tests/deploy/ci/dedicated.sh: drop local _container fallback.
- scripts/tests/deploy/local/deploy/fresh-kept-app.sh: drop redundant
${INFINITO_DISTRO:-debian} reassignment after sourcing env/all.sh
(defaults.sh already defaults the value).
- scripts/tests/deploy/local/deploy/fresh-purged-app.sh: drop
target_container fallback; INFINITO_CONTAINER is already in env.
- scripts/tests/deploy/local/exec/container.sh: drop the lazy
${INFINITO_CONTAINER:=infinito_nexus_...} default; defaults.sh source
in env/all.sh already guarantees the value.
- scripts/tests/dns.sh: source defaults.sh so callers only need to set
INFINITO_DISTRO (the implicit dependency was previously a footgun).
- scripts/system/tls/trust/{wsl2,linux}.sh: same — source defaults.sh,
drop the ${INFINITO_CONTAINER:-infinito_nexus_debian} fallback in
linux.sh.
- .github/workflows/test-dns.yml: drop redundant
INFINITO_CONTAINER: infinito_nexus_${{ matrix.distro }} from per-step
env blocks (3 sites). The env now flows from INFINITO_DISTRO via the
defaults.sh sourced inside the scripts.
- tests/unit/cli/deploy/development/test_matrix_deploy.py: replace the
module-level os.environ.setdefault('INFINITO_CONTAINER', 'infinito_nexus_arch')
shim — which itself encoded the formula — with a module-level patch of
resolve_container that returns an opaque test-fixture string. Drop the
now-unused distro="arch" field from the _args() Namespace fixture
(deploy.handler stopped consuming it after the --distro arg removal).
Documentation aligned:
- docs/contributing/environment/variables.md: rewrite the INFINITO_CONTAINER
row to spell out the SPOT contract — set automatically by defaults.sh,
never re-derived elsewhere, callers re-source defaults.sh after
changing INFINITO_DISTRO mid-process.
- docs/contributing/artefact/files/compose.yml.md: replace the
INFINITO_DISTRO row (which described the now-removed
`infinito_nexus_${INFINITO_DISTRO:-debian}` interpolation) with an
INFINITO_CONTAINER row noting the strict ${INFINITO_CONTAINER:?...} read.
Verified:
- Formula derivation: 1 production hit (the SPOT in defaults.sh:18).
- INFINITO_CONTAINER fallback patterns (:-/:=): 0.
- --distro CLI arg refs: 0 (one comment explaining the removal).
- make test green: 1553 unit + 168 integration tests, no skipped suites.

- Add host-level AAAA DNS sanity test against CoreDNS
- Fail hard on SERVFAIL (breaks Node/getaddrinfo with EAI_AGAIN)
- Allow empty AAAA responses (IPv4-only setup is valid)
- Keep A-record validation unchanged
This prevents silent IPv6 resolver regressions that break CSP checks.

sys-svc-docker role as a post-restart validation handler.
This change moves the inner-container DNS validation out of the CI test
suite and into the Docker service lifecycle itself, ensuring that DNS is
verified exactly where it matters: inside the Docker-in-Docker daemon.
Key changes:
- Add roles/sys-svc-docker/files/test-dns.sh:
- Runs inside the DinD container
- Waits for dockerd readiness
- Executes a BusyBox test container with explicit --dns
- Verifies DOMAIN and subdomain resolve to the expected IP
- Fails hard if DNS is broken
- Register DNS self-test as a docker restart handler:
- Runs once per deployment
- Only executed when DOCKER_IN_CONTAINER and MODE_DEBUG are enabled
- Uses ansible.builtin.script with role_path for correct resolution
- Remove inner Docker DNS test from scripts/tests/dns.sh:
- CI test suite now only validates host → CoreDNS → outer container chain
- DinD DNS validation is now part of the Docker service health lifecycle
This ensures that:
- DNS is validated after every Docker restart
- DinD networking failures are detected immediately
- CI and production share the same DNS validation logic
- Docker-in-Docker DNS becomes a first-class health invariant

- Quote dig server argument to avoid word splitting (SC2086)
- Replace &&/|| pseudo-if with proper if/else blocks (SC2015)
- Validate INFINITO_CONTAINER early via required env guard
- Keep DNS test logic unchanged, only harden correctness and linting
This makes scripts/tests/dns.sh fully shellcheck -x compliant and more robust.

- Introduce env.ci as single source of truth for CI networking
- Make docker-compose, CoreDNS and Docker daemon fully env-driven
- Render CoreDNS Corefile from template via envsubst
- Replace hardcoded IPs/domains with environment variables
- Integrate env-based networking into Ansible defaults
- Remove static Corefile and daemon.json
This makes DNS and networking deterministic and reproducible across
host, CoreDNS, infinito runner and Docker-in-Docker.
