The package cache creates every Nexus proxy with
strictContentTypeValidation. A raw proxy has no type contract, and Nexus
cannot type a GPG keybox: on a fresh cache it answers the Node.js release
keyring (raw.githubusercontent.com/nodejs/release-keys/.../pubring.kbx)
with 404 "Content type could not be determined". The Node.js installer
from #1108 fetches that keyring, so on main (run 39668792538) Workspace
debian:13 fails in `make install-lint`, and Workspace ubuntu, centos and
manjaro fail in `test-external`, whose URL check reaches the same file
through the cache.
The four raw proxies (raw-githubusercontent, raw-codeload-github,
raw-packagist, raw-alpine) now share the storage block with validation
switched off. Every typed proxy (apt, pypi, npm, helm, rubygems, go, yum)
keeps strict validation. The installer's integrity check does not depend
on Nexus: it verifies the SHASUMS file with gpgv and the tarball with
SHA-256.

The Fedora and CentOS Stream workspace jobs failed TLS to pypi.org,
registry.npmjs.org and repo.packagist.org (CERTIFICATE_VERIFY_FAILED,
curl error 7). package-frontend/ca.sh put the frontend CA into the Arch
anchor dir /etc/ca-certificates/trust-source/anchors, which p11-kit on
the RedHat family never reads.
Probing for the anchor dir does not fix it: with-ca-trust.sh creates
both /etc/pki/ca-trust/source/anchors and
/etc/ca-certificates/trust-source/anchors on every update-ca-trust host,
so the probe in registry-ca.sh already picks the RedHat dir on a reused
Arch runner. Both scripts now install into both dirs, rebuild only when
one of them changed, and take CA_ROOT so unit tests run them against a
fake root.

Run 34893363518 lost the fedora workspace job at certs.sh with exit 125. docker run resolved alpine:latest itself, the token request to auth.docker.io came back as 'read: connection reset by peer', and that single transport fault ended the job. Five of the six workspace jobs pulled the same image successfully in the same run, so the cause is transport, not a Docker Hub policy response, whose signature would be toomanyrequests after a successful token exchange.
Every other network operation on this path already retries: scripts/github/runner/pull_with_retry.sh serves two workflows, scripts/image/build.sh has its own ladder for the build frontend, and cli/administration/deploy/development/compose.py retries compose up six times. This call site had no attempts at all, so pre-pull through the existing helper rather than a new loop.
The attempt budget is 3x10s instead of the helper's 7x20s default because this runs as a prerequisite on the interactive local path, where two minutes of sleeping without a network would be felt. The call stays non-fatal so a locally cached image still carries an unreachable registry, the same semantics 0df75d83a6 established for the buildx bootstrap; set -euo pipefail is why it needs the if-guard.

The ubuntu CI image build (job 103277644636) hung on Canonical's
archive: apt fetched 26 MB at 417 kB/s, then 61.6 kB in 29 s, then sat
on the package download until the job was cancelled after 23 minutes,
while download.docker.com delivered 42.8 MB in under a second on the
same runner. Locally archive.ubuntu.com and security.ubuntu.com took
20-26 s to the first byte against 2 s for a university mirror.
INFINITO_APT_UBUNTU_MIRRORS in default.env is now the one list of
Ubuntu mirrors, in failover order: de.archive.ubuntu.com, ftp.fau.de,
ftp.halifax.rwth-aachen.de, archive.ubuntu.com.
- Image builds: the Dockerfile sources the list alongside the install
scripts and runs scripts/install/apt-mirrors.sh first. In an image
with ubuntu.sources it points both stanzas at apt's mirror+file
method, priorities in list order, and sets Acquire::http::Timeout to
10 s, so apt moves on from a mirror that fails or goes silent; other
distros are untouched. In ubuntu:latest apt-get update took 8 s
against 110 s on the stock sources, a dead first mirror was left
behind within 25 s against 62 s on apt's defaults, and the swarm node
packages (80 debs) came in 17 s. The Dockerfile's own RUN lines ran
clean on ubuntu, debian, fedora and arch.
- Package cache: package.sh proxies the first entry as the primary
Ubuntu repos and the second as their fallback. Nexus revalidates
metadata on every request here (metadataMaxAge 0), which costs a
full download from a mirror without an ETag; both de.archive and
ftp.fau.de send one, and the 15 MB universe index now comes back
from the cache in 0.02 s.
- tests/external/repository/test_apt_ubuntu_mirrors.py keeps the list
honest: the first mirror must answer InRelease within 5 s (median of
three) or the test names a faster later one, no mirror's -updates may
lag the freshest by more than 24 h, and every entry must be the
primary archive, a Canonical country alias or an enabled official
mirror in Launchpad's registry. It caught the first draft of the
list: mirrors.edge.kernel.org is not an official Ubuntu mirror.
After pulling, an existing checkout needs `make dotenv-force`: plain
`make dotenv` re-reads the old .env through BASH_ENV and keeps its
values.

A debian:bookworm workspace job died on `apt-get update`: the mounted
sources list carried the Ubuntu entry too, Nexus had auto-blocked
archive.ubuntu.com, and apt fails the whole update on one bad source.
Three holes, three plugs:
- One sources list per INFINITO_DISTRO under compose/package-cache/apt/,
selected by the compose overrides. A Debian runner no longer fetches
an Ubuntu suite it has no use for. The non-apt distros get an empty
file so the bind mount has a source to point at.
- autoBlock off. While a remote is auto-blocked Nexus answers `404
Remote Auto Blocked` to every client instead of falling back to the
copy it already has cached.
- Mirror failover in the frontend. Every apt suite gets a second proxy
repo on an independent upstream; a 5xx from the primary re-runs the
request against it. Nexus has no group repository type for apt, so
the retry lives in nginx.
Measured on a live Nexus 3.91.1: dead remote without a cached copy
answers 502, with a cached copy 200 regardless of metadataMaxAge. The
frontend serves 149 kB of real bookworm `Release` from the mirror repo
when the primary is dead, and the new regex locations produce upstream
request lines byte-identical to the `rewrite … break` form they replace,
including `%3a` epochs in pool paths.
INFINITO_CACHE_PACKAGE_APT_LIST is gone; the mount interpolates
INFINITO_DISTRO directly.

The update-ca-trust branch hardcoded /etc/ca-certificates/trust-source/anchors, which only arch ships. Fedora's ca-certificates rpm ships only /etc/pki/ca-trust/source/anchors and CentOS Stream is identical, so on those nodes install -d created a directory nothing reads, update-ca-trust extract rebuilt a bundle without the CA, and the script reported success. The playbook then routes the node dockerd through the MITM proxy unconditionally, so every image pull failed with x509 while bootstrap looked green.
The dir is now probed, an unknown layout is a hard error, and the rebuild no longer swallows stderr.

Move files that share a delimiter-bounded name prefix within a folder (threshold 2) into a subfolder named after the prefix, dropping the prefix from the filename. Covers plugins/filter (docker, generate, has, merge, get/all), env handler subpackages, utils/roles/entity, utils/tests/swarm/write, role SQL/scripts/templates, keycloak/mailu task-includes, shared tasks/utils/load, and CI scripts. Update every import, query_file/script/include_tasks/src/lookup target, compose bind mount, and python -m path to the new locations.
Extend the prefix-grouped-files lint to threshold 2 with dir-level .nocheck and file-head nocheck opt-outs, and skip groups whose shortest member's stem equals the shared prefix. Keep flat only where a loader forbids nesting: WordPress mu-plugins and the docs/requirements namespace. Ansible filter discovery is recursive, so nested filters stay Jinja-resolvable.

Split the single cache freshness window into content (immutable artifacts: wheels, debs, rpms) and metadata/negative-cache (indexes, not-found lookups). Content keeps the long 6-day window; metadata and negativeCache.timeToLive default to 0 so Nexus always revalidates indexes, and a newly published version shows at once instead of being masked by a stale cached index.
ensure_proxy_repo now PUT-updates an existing proxy (POST only creates), so the split applies to already-provisioned repos. Covers every ecosystem proxy (apt, pypi, npm, rubygems, packagist, alpine, go), not just python.

Store the rotated admin password inside the container (umask 077) during
bootstrap and read it back on later runs, instead of assuming the
configured INFINITO_CACHE_PACKAGE_ADMIN_PASSWORD still matches; fall back
to the configured value when the stored file is missing.

Three new lint tests close gaps in the INFINITO_* SPOT contract:
* tests/lint/filesystem/env/test_default_env_keys_handled.py
Every default.env key must be wired through a handler.
* tests/lint/filesystem/env/test_used_keys_declared.py
Every INFINITO_* in .sh/.py must live in env/{default,ci}.env or
a handler; per-line `# nocheck:` suppresses runtime-only refs.
* tests/lint/filesystem/python/test_no_infinito_get_defaults.py
Forbid ANY default in `.get("INFINITO_*", ...)` -- including the
empty-string fallback (which silently masks an unset key). The
nocheck check walks every physical line the call spans so an
autoformat-split call still honours the marker.
Cache namespace flattens to a single prefix:
INFINITO_PACKAGE_CACHE_* -> INFINITO_CACHE_PACKAGE_*
INFINITO_REGISTRY_CACHE_* -> INFINITO_CACHE_REGISTRY_*
The five previously driver-injected paths (APT_LIST, NPMRC,
PIP_CONF, REGISTRY_PROXY_CONF, FRONTEND_CA_FILE) move into
env/default.env and passthrough.STATIC_KEYS; the
`cache_env_overrides()` helper and its two call sites are gone
along with the test-fixture override for FRONTEND_CA_DIR.
SPOT-strict rewrites:
- 19 sites: `something.get("INFINITO_X", "")` -> subscript
`something["INFINITO_X"]` (loud KeyError when env loader did
not run; all keys live in env/default.env).
- 2 handler-internal bootstrap reads suppressed with
`# nocheck: handler-bootstrap-read`.
- 30 runtime-only / driver-injected / test-fixture references
annotated with `# nocheck: <reason>` per-line.
- Unit tests that previously removed SPOT-guaranteed keys via
`{k: v ... if k \!= KEY}` or `clear=True` switch to setting
the key to "" explicitly, matching the new contract.
Side fixes:
- INFINITO_DNS_DOMAIN + INFINITO_DNS_HOSTS_FILE move from
shell-side defaults in common.sh to env/default.env and
passthrough.STATIC_KEYS.
- dns_systemd_is_operational() drops the dead
INFINITO_DNS_FORCE_HOSTS_FALLBACK override branch (the
variable was never set anywhere).
- INFINITO_WORKER_FETCH switches from `os.environ.get(KEY, "1")`
to `os.environ[KEY]`.
- scripts/tests/code/wrapper.sh exec args move into a bash
array so `# nocheck:` on INFINITO_TEST_TYPE can live on its
own element line (SC2215 fix).

Replace 8 bash env modules with a single Python generator
(cli.meta.env) that materialises env/static.env + runtime context
into a gitignored .env. Each variable lives in its own handler
under utils/env/handlers/; defaults carry inline one-line `# ...`
comments.
Rename to the INFINITO_* schema:
- workflow inputs: APPS, SERVICES_DISABLED, CMD, DEBUG, WHITELIST,
BUNDLES, FULL_CYCLE, VARIANT, RUN_FLAGS, LIMIT_HOST, PARALLEL
- inventory: INVENTORY_DIR / INVENTORY_FILE / HOST_VARS_FILE,
PW_FILE -> INVENTORY_PASSWORD_FILE
- venv: VENV_BASE / VENV_FALLBACK / VENV_NAME
- new SPOT defaults: COMPILE_SILENCE, CONTAINER_NO_CA,
WAIT_HEALTH_TIMEOUT_S, PACKAGE_CACHE_FRONTEND_INIT_IMAGE,
promoted IMAGE_TAG from GHA-only to general passthrough
compose.yml hardening:
- inline \${VAR:-default} removed; strict \${VAR:?...} everywhere
- new integration lint blocks regressions
Tooling:
- scripts/install/all.sh owns the stamp-file install logic
(Makefile target delegates)
- scripts/meta/env/load.sh is the single shell entry point;
8 bash modules deleted
- new shell lint: no INFINITO_* defaults outside env/static.env
Tests:
- 93 new unit tests for utils/env/{builder,parser,runtime,writer}
- restructure tests/lint into repository/ (file-content rules) vs
filesystem/{shell,python,env}/ (filesystem-shape rules)
- drift + smoke integration tests against the generator
Docs:
- variables.md is now a pointer; per-variable docs live next to
the key in env/static.env / env/ci.env
- compose.yml.md drops the Default column

`test_public_http_urls_are_reachable` flagged
`http://deb.debian.org/debian-security` as a hard fail (HTTP 404),
breaking the test-external CI gate.
The URL is correct — apt clients fetch concrete files underneath
`dists/bookworm-security/`, all of which resolve to 200. Only a bare
GET on the redirector path returns 404 because the redirector does
not serve a directory index. The same convention (`# nocheck: url`)
already covers raw-packagist on line 121 for the same reason.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.7 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
The Nexus 3 raw-packagist proxy points at https://repo.packagist.org/
as the upstream root. That root returns HTTP 404 (Packagist serves
content under /packages/, /p2/, etc., not at /), so the external URL
reachability test fails the run even though the host is healthy and
the proxy works. Mark the line with `# nocheck: url` to skip the
literal-URL probe; the upstream is still validated indirectly when
the cache stack pulls real packages.
Extend the local cache stack with three independent capabilities:
1. Inner-`dockerd` build coverage for HTTP-only package mirrors.
`roles/sys-svc-compose/files/compose.py` (the runner's `compose`
wrapper) auto-generates a transient `compose.cache.override.yml`
per app when `INFINITO_PACKAGE_CACHE_FRONTEND_IP` is exported. The
override pins `build.extra_hosts` for `deb.debian.org`,
`archive.ubuntu.com`, and `security.ubuntu.com` to the frontend.
`pull.py` now delegates to the wrapper so build/pull operations see
the same `-f` set the wrapper auto-detects. nginx in the frontend
gains a port-80 listener with path rewrites for those hostnames,
and `package.sh` registers two new Nexus proxies
(`apt-debian-security`, `apt-ubuntu-security`) for the security
suites whose upstream URL prefix differs from the main archive.
Alpine is intentionally excluded from the inner-build extra_hosts:
3.18+ defaults to HTTPS, and inner-`dockerd` build containers do
not import the frontend CA. Routing apk through the frontend would
trip TLS verification.
2. General cache freshness env-var. `scripts/meta/env/cache/package.sh`
exports `INFINITO_PACKAGE_CACHE_MAX_AGE_MIN` (default `129600`,
i.e. 90 days). The bootstrap helper consumes it for every Nexus
proxy's `contentMaxAge`, `metadataMaxAge`, and
`negativeCache.timeToLive`, replacing the previous 1440-minute
literal. Lower the value when chasing fast-moving upstreams.
3. SPOT cache documentation at `docs/contributing/environment/cache.md`.
`compose.yml.md`, `variables.md`, the per-service READMEs, and
`requirements/012-...` now link to it instead of restating the
stack's behaviour. Net documentation lines drop substantially while
the cache page becomes the single user-facing reference.
Also: code-comment cleanup per `docs/contributing/documentation.md`
guidelines across all touched .py / .sh / .yml files. Multi-paragraph
docstrings, banner separators, and restate-the-obvious comments are
removed; one-line WHY comments remain where the rationale is not
already visible in the code.

Move the `docker compose -f ...` flag list and the cache-override
env-var setup into single helpers in `cli/deploy/development/common.py`:
* `compose_file_args()` — decides whether to layer
`compose/cache.override.yml` on top of `compose.yml`.
* `cache_env_overrides()` — produces the env-var dict the
override file requires strictly via `${VAR:?…}`.
Both `cli.deploy.development.compose` (up flow) and
`cli.deploy.development.down` (down flow) now call these helpers, so
up and down resolve to the same compose-file set and the same env
vars. Previously the cache env-var setup was duplicated inline in
compose.py and missing entirely from down.py, which made `make down`
fail under the `cache` profile with a confusing "required variable
missing" error before even reaching the orphan-cleanup step.
Single SPOT discipline: the host CA directory default lives only in
`scripts/meta/env/cache/package.sh` (sourced via BASH_ENV by every
Makefile recipe). `cache_env_overrides()` refuses to fall back to a
duplicate literal — a missing env var raises SystemExit pointing at
the env script. Tests that bypass the env layer set the var
explicitly so the SPOT-strict guard does not raise.
Containerize cert-gen: the original
`scripts/docker/cache/package-frontend-certs.sh` ran `mkdir`/`openssl`
host-side, which fails when `/var/cache/infinito` is not writable from
the invoking shell (sandboxed tooling, non-root operators). Move the
openssl logic into `compose/package-cache-frontend/cert-gen.sh` and
have the host wrapper docker-run it inside a throw-away alpine
container so the docker daemon (root) creates the bind-mount source
paths. Same pattern as how rpardini's registry-cache generates its CA
in-container.

Add a TLS-terminating reverse proxy in front of the Sonatype Nexus 3 OSS
pull-through cache so the `infinito` runner can hit upstream
package-manager URLs (pypi.org, registry.npmjs.org, rubygems.org,
repo.packagist.org, proxy.golang.org, dl-cdn.alpinelinux.org,
files.pythonhosted.org, raw.githubusercontent.com, codeload.github.com)
unchanged and still flow through Nexus.
Mechanism:
* scripts/docker/cache/package-frontend-certs.sh — host-side helper,
idempotently generates a dedicated CA + per-hostname leaf certs.
* compose/package-cache-frontend/upstreams.conf — nginx server-blocks
that match SNI per hostname and reverse-proxy onto the matching
Nexus repo path.
* compose/cache.override.yml `infinito.extra_hosts` — DNS-hijack so
the runner's clients resolve each upstream onto the frontend's
static IP.
* scripts/docker/cache/package-frontend-ca.sh — runner-side helper,
drops the CA into the system trust store post-startup so apt/pip/
curl/etc. accept TLS against the hijacked hostnames.
* cli/deploy/development/compose.py — orchestrates cert gen before
compose-up, CA install after health.
Scope today: runner-only. App-service Dockerfile builds executed by
the inner dockerd are NOT routed through the frontend; that requires
build-time CA injection and is deferred.
Also extends scripts/docker/cache/package.sh with five additional
Nexus proxies registered for transparent use: gem-proxy, go-proxy,
yum-rocky, yum-fedora, raw-packagist, raw-alpine, raw-codeload-github.
Refactor: move all cache services + runner-side cache mounts/depends_on/
extra_hosts from compose.yml into compose/cache.override.yml. Base
compose.yml now describes only the bare CI/runtime stack (coredns +
infinito). The override file is the single gate for the cache stack;
`profiles: ["cache"]` attributes and `--profile cache` flag emission
were redundant once file inclusion controls existence and removed
accordingly.

Brings up the package-cache compose service alongside the existing
registry-cache, gated by the same `cache` profile. Bootstrap helper
(scripts/docker/cache/package.sh) auto-rotates the admin password from
the well-known default, accepts the Sonatype CE EULA (3.71+ blocks
artifact downloads with HTTP 403 until /v1/system/eula is POSTed —
disclaimer must be sent verbatim with its unicode quotes), enables
anonymous read, creates one default blobstore, and registers the MVP
proxy set: apt-debian, apt-ubuntu, pypi-proxy, npm-proxy, helm-bitnami,
raw-githubusercontent. The runner gets pip.conf / .npmrc /
sources.list snippets bind-mounted in (each defaulting to /dev/null
when the cache profile is inactive) so the deploy is byte-identical
with cache off.
Cache plumbing:
- scripts/meta/env/cache/{registry,package}.sh: per-cache env defaults,
hostname-derived admin password seed (uses `hostname` command, not
$HOSTNAME shell var, so the value is identical across interactive
shells, non-interactive subshells, and Python subprocesses).
- scripts/docker/cache/{registry-ca,package}.sh: container-side
bootstrap helpers, both moved under scripts/docker/cache/.
- scripts/system/cache/clean.sh + `make cache-clean`: wipes both
/var/cache/infinito/core/cache/{registry,package} dirs and stops
the cache containers.
- cli/deploy/development/compose.py: Profile gate exports the three
new INFINITO_PACKAGE_CACHE_* client-snippet paths and runs the
bootstrap helper after the package-cache reports healthy.
Compose service uses sonatype/nexus3:3.91.1-ubi pinned, runs as
root (UBI image refuses to chown a fresh bind-mount), and forces
NEXUS_SECURITY_RANDOMPASSWORD=false so the bootstrap can log in with
admin/admin123 before rotating; the random-password mode otherwise
auto-completes onboarding silently and leaves no readable secret on
disk for an automated bootstrap to pick up.
Tests: tests/unit/cli/deploy/development/test_compose.py grows two
new assertions (cache services listed in `up` args when local; build
tests pin CI=true to retain ci-only assertions).
Closes req-012.
