kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Fable 5 194671d90f feat(readme): uniform description schema and clearer role titles
Rewrite all 254 role descriptions to a uniform noun-phrase schema
(function-first, no leading verb, no trailing period, <=120 chars) and
enforce it via the extended description lint. Rename 12 role README H1
titles for clarity (e.g. Backup Container to Local -> Backup Docker
Volumes, CSS Service -> Corporate Design, NGINX Legal -> Imprint) and
regenerate their Cosmos and Quick Setup sections. Overview table
regenerated.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.8 bb45434d61 fix(swarm): overlay beacon networks for discourse, wordpress and nextcloud
Declare the proxy_resolvable overlay (swarm mode only) with the app domain as alias, following the committed keycloak/seaweedfs pattern: the front proxy harvests the alias and resolves the app cross-node over the overlay instead of 502ing on an unreachable node-local network. Compose deployments are unaffected since the overlay is gated to modes: [swarm].

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.8 7a6268fa96 refactor(deploy): replace skip with services modes
Per-role deploy-mode opt-out moves from meta/tests.yml 'skip:' to meta/services.yml <entity>.modes.{compose,swarm}.enabled on the primary entity. get_role_skip now derives from it; get_role_mode_enabled added. A new lint requires every role shipping templates/*compose*.yml.j2 to declare both mode flags. Migrates 107 services.yml and drops 11 skip-only tests.yml. Also removes the variant_status deployability gate so swarm runs one job per variant unconditionally (variant_status.py and deployable_variant_indices deleted, complexity model simplified). Adds the i8matix alias.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.8 f78ec52385 fix(nextcloud): stop the config copy-up race and the root-owned config bind
The custom Dockerfile ran mkdir -p /var/www/html/config, which broke the
stock image's empty-/var/www/html invariant: Docker then had image content
at the shared nextcloud_data mount point and did a non-idempotent copy-up
os.Mkdir(config) per container. compose up --force-recreate starts
nextcloud and cron concurrently, so both raced that mkdir and the loser
crashed with 'failed to mkdir .../_data/config: file exists'. Reproduced
char-for-char locally (31/60 with the infinito bind, 7/80 without, so the
bind is only an aggravator); removing the image content gives 0/80.

Drop the Dockerfile mkdir so /var/www/html stays empty and the stock
entrypoint (reached via nextcloud-init-gate.sh -> /entrypoint.sh) creates
config/ as www-data with no copy-up. The mkdir only existed to pre-seed
config as www-data because binding infinito at /var/www/html/config/infinito
forced Docker to create config/ root:root; move that bind (and its
NEXTCLOUD_DOCKER_CONF_ADD_PATH loader path) out to /var/www/infinito so
config/ is owned by www-data and config.php stays writable. Keeps type:
bind, so the swarm config-object fix from 699008a16 is not reverted.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.8 ee07cd96b2 fix(ci): cap variants per compose job per role instead of globally
The nextcloud compose job bundled variants 2,3 into one runner and
needed ~332min of deploy time against the 300min step budget inside
GitHub's hard 360min job cap; raising the timeout leaves no headroom
for the measured runtime variance and starves the post-steps that
upload artifacts. Add a variant_bundle_size override in meta/tests.yml,
consumed by the variant bundle packer and the complexity report alike,
and set it to 1 for web-app-nextcloud only: eight ~190min jobs with
over 100min of headroom while every other app keeps the global
bundling.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.8 f2825407f6 fix(web-app-nextcloud): disable files_linkeditor on nc33 (removed New-menu API)
files_linkeditor 1.1.25 registers its New-link entries via the legacy fileList.newFileMenu API that Nextcloud removed in the v28 Files rewrite, so the entries never render on nc33 (the menu opens and every other addon registers, this one is absent) - network-independent, not Tor-related. Disable the addon and let its spec skip via skipUnlessAddonEnabled until an upstream version using addNewFileMenuEntry ships.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Fable 5 4a23e0cb09 feat(services): declare locally-built images via services.<key>.custom
The custom flag moves from 33 hardcoded template kwargs into the merged
service config: 'custom: true' names the shared <entity>_custom build,
a string names a second distinct '<string>_custom' image inside one app
(nextcloud whiteboard). The image lookup reads the declaration as a
fallback, so config consumers (e.g. backup image matching) resolve the
exact deployed reference from one declaration point. nextcloud cron now
runs the nextcloud_custom build like the app service instead of the
upstream image.

A new services lint couples the declaration to reality in both
directions: custom requires a role Dockerfile, and a role Dockerfile
requires a custom declaration. The eight legacy roles deploying local
builds under upstream tags or ad-hoc image= overrides are ratcheted via
'# nocheck: dockerfile-custom'.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Fable 5 cf32840586 feat(lint): require *_PORT vars to resolve via lookup, migrate literals
New lint rejects literal port numbers in roles/*/vars/main.yml: the port
belongs in meta/services.yml (services.<svc>.ports.<scope>.<name>) where
band governance and stack rendering read it; vars resolve it via
lookup('config', ...). Migrated the 16 remaining literals across
elasticsearch, registry-docker, erpnext, flowise, funkwhale, magento,
moodle, nextcloud, penpot and shopware.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.8 f76bfcf531 refactor(svc-bkp-volume-2-local): rename role from svc-bkp-container-2-local
Rename the role, its test tree, the primary entity key
(volume-2-local), the derived vars (BKP_VOLUME_2_LOCAL_*,
SYS_SERVICE_BACKUP_VOLUME_2_LOCAL), the run-once fact, and every
group_names consumer flag, include path, doc, and lint reference. The
container_backup service key and the on-disk backup-docker-to-local
tree keep their names: both are contracts with existing consumer
entries, snapshot trees, and the baudolo pull tooling.

Operators must rename the svc-bkp-container-2-local inventory group and
disable the previous versioned units on already-provisioned hosts; the
pre-deploy snapshot glob derives its base from the new role name and
will not find them.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.8 3875eb2cf9 feat(variants): pin container_backup per matrix variant
Variant 0 pins the backup consumer flag enabled so the matrix baseline exercises the in-group branch; every other variant pins it disabled (shared: false carries the static-override suppression since the base value stays literally true). The matrix and wordpress variant entries move their services mapping to the list-item head so the static-override line parser resolves the override paths; yaml semantics are unchanged.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.8 4473edafb2 feat(roles): declare the container_backup consumer flag on stack roles with volumes
Every invokable stack role that declares named volumes in meta/volumes.yml now carries the standard container_backup consumer entry: enabled resolves via 'svc-bkp-container-2-local' in group_names, shared stays literally true since there is no per-consumer backup instance. Playwright/dynamic-flag/bond-baseline suppressions ride on the block per the established idioms; stale explanatory comments in the touched files are dropped.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Fable 5 8ebc912d7a fix(users): opt service bots out of identity provisioning
Keycloak's realm import enforces the ^[a-z0-9]+$ username pattern, so
the LDAP-disabled seeding path (Ensure non-reserved users exist) died
on every hyphenated bot: "Username is reserved or contains invalid
characters". These are API/basic-auth accounts that never need an SSO
identity; accounts: [] takes them out of the seeding loop (semaphore's
breakglass-administrator convention), and no-reply keeps only its
mailbox account.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.8 77be21f5fd feat(tor): mark tor as non-playwright-gateable in domain services.yml
Onion routing is transport-layer with no persona/UI surface, so tor cannot be gated from the per-persona Playwright specs. Mark the tor block with '# nocheck: playwright-service-flag' in the 60 domain roles that ship a playwright.env.j2, per test_env_services_match's documented exemption for services that legitimately cannot be Playwright-gated.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.8 1d9d355bc9 feat(tor): add onion on/off variant coverage to domain roles
Each role's meta/variants.yml now pins the tor onion gate both ways so the matrix exercises it: variant 0 pins services.tor.enabled: true, every non-baseline variant pins enabled: false + shared: false (# nocheck: variants-static-override, since tor.shared is a static literal). This gives real test_coverage / test_bond_baseline coverage without the removed per-key code exemptions.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.8 0a7164af48 feat(tor): per-role onion service block in meta/services.yml
Domain-serving roles reference the svc-net-tor provider via a tor: block. Consumers declare enabled (dynamic group_names gate) and shared: true (static — onion is always the shared node model, inline nocheck: dynamic-flag). The provider svc-net-tor additionally declares exclusive/primary defaults that consumers inherit via resolve_service_config unless overridden.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Fable 5 b73706c022 fix(web-app-nextcloud): converge on swarm and run multi-node fpm safely
The fpm/cron occ-status healthcheck rendered a 30s start_period, far shorter
than the (image-serialized) first-boot init, so swarm killed every task with
exit 137 mid-init and the stack never converged. Give both healthchecks a 10m
start_period and raise swarm_stack_converge_retries to 600.

The nextcloud image already serializes first boot across replicas (its own
init lock), so unpin fpm from replicas: 1 and let it run on every node; keep
cron pinned as a genuine singleton. For correct multi-instance runtime, follow
the Nextcloud caching recommendation: memcache.local => APCu in both modes,
memcache.distributed and memcache.locking => Redis in swarm, backed by an
explicit redis connection array (which also fixes the RedisException at occ
upgrade, where OC\Memcache\Redis previously fell back to 127.0.0.1).

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Fable 5 699008a168 fix(web-app-nextcloud): mount the infinito config dir as a bind, not a swarm config
infinito_conf's source is a DIRECTORY (volumes/infinito, rendered from
config/*.j2), but a Docker Swarm config object is a single file, so
docker stack deploy aborted the whole nextcloud stack with
'read .../infinito: is a directory'. Compose only tolerated it by
emulating configs: as bind-mounts. Declare it as type: bind read_only
so a directory payload mounts correctly in both modes; the single-file
nginx_conf and nextcloud_includes stay config objects.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Fable 5 1e50e4adeb fix(web-app-nextcloud): replace volumes_from with an explicit ro data mount on the proxy
docker stack deploy rejects volumes_from ('compose file contains
unsupported options'), so every nextcloud swarm variant died before the
stack was even created. Mount the shared data volume on the proxy
read-only via meta/volumes.yml instead; the render pipeline emits
data:/var/www/html/:ro and the proxy nginx only reads the tree
(try_files/static/fastcgi_pass; temp dirs live in the container fs).
Compose behaviour is equivalent, matching upstream fpm+nginx examples.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Fable 5 30afef6bbe fix(resources): entity fallback, short compose service names + SPOT vars
resource_filter now falls back service_name -> entity_name -> hard
default, so entity-level limits keep applying to per-service compose
entries. Compose service names drop the entity prefix (kix, jitsi,
zammad, bluesky); the docker container_name keeps it via compose_only.
A new lint forbids '<entity>-'-prefixed service names.

Service names and internal ports are declared once: vars/main.yml
holds <ROLE>_<SERVICE>_SERVICE constants (container names derived via
entity_name), meta/services.yml declares ports.internal consumed
through config lookups. sso-proxy upstreams stack-qualify the origin
host in swarm because short aliases are ambiguous on shared overlays.
Stale proxy.service_key entries fixed for erpnext/shopware/nextcloud.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.8 9e7f28db20 test(lint): enforce swarm config objects are world-readable + widen 18 roles to 0444
Swarm config objects mount root:root; a 0440 mode is unreadable by a non-root container app user and crashloops the service (jenkins JCasC AccessDeniedException, exit 5). docker compose never hits this since there the file is a host bind-mount inheriting host perms.

New lint test_config_object_world_readable flags type:config modes lacking o+r (type:secret exempt, per-line # nocheck escape). Widen the 22 offending 0440 configs across 18 roles to 0444: adds read only, cannot break a reader, and fixes latent non-root cases (e.g. synapse, pixelfed).

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.8 e55fb78f15 test(lint): comment-policy linter scoped to changed files
Add tests/lint/repository/test_comments_valid.py: across .py/.sh/.yml/.rb/
.php/.css, a comment is valid only as a file header, a doc comment directly
above a class/function/rule, a tool directive, or a mid-code EXCEPTION that
flags a real trip-wire (text starts with Warning/Exception/Caution/Gotcha/
Workaround/Security/Important/...). Plain narration, banners, commented-out
code and neutral notes are rejected.

Scope is the working-tree diff (staged + unstaged + untracked vs HEAD): the
legacy tree is grandfathered in and never breaks the build, while every file a
change touches must comply going forward. Python is parsed with tokenize
(string-aware); a multi-line trip-wire's marker on its first line validates the
whole block.

Also fold in autoformat normalization of 11 meta/{csp,domains,server}.yml files.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.8 6ce6780575 refactor(meta): split server.yml into csp/domains/networks.yml
Extract the csp, domains, and networks blocks out of roles/*/meta/server.yml
into dedicated meta files, each mapping to its own top-level applications key
via the recursive meta-walk:

  csp:      -> meta/csp.yml      -> applications.<app>.csp
  domains:  -> meta/domains.yml  -> applications.<app>.domains
  networks: -> meta/networks.yml -> applications.<app>.networks

Residual nginx/proxy keys (status_codes, client_max_body_size, locations,
ip6_enabled, config_upstream_url) stay in server.yml; an emptied server.yml is
deleted. 98 server.yml -> 249 new files, 74 deleted.

- Consumers repointed applications.<app>.server.{csp,domains,networks} ->
  applications.<app>.{csp,domains,networks} across templates, vars, tasks,
  lookups and filters.
- Infra readers migrated: canonical_domains_map, application_domain_index,
  build_ldap_role_entries, service-registry overlay discovery,
  roles_with_service, and the file-based readers utils/domains/list.py +
  utils/meta/scan.py (read the now-deleted server.yml directly).
- Detection + mapping: _META_TOPICS gains csp/domains/networks;
  ROLE_FILE_META_{CSP,DOMAINS,NETWORKS} constants + ROLE_FILES entries.
- New self-expiring lint guard (test_server_meta_no_split_fields) fails if a
  server.yml still carries a split field; auto-fails from 2026-12-28 as a
  delete reminder.

The per-role swarm overlay local subnet was a /28 (14 usable IPs). Re-allocate all 74 /28 roles to a unique /24 (254 usable) inside 192.168.0.0/16, chosen via the network address suggester so the assignments stay non-overlapping. kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.8 d6e646e458 feat(web-app-nextcloud): rebalance deploy variants
Disable talk_recording in variants where talk is off, and isolate gitlab into its own variant so it no longer shares a CI runner with discourse and mastodon.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.8 f935daa61f chore(roles): right-size container mem/pids resource limits
Trim padded limits (nextcloud redis 8g->1g, talk_recording 6g->3g, whiteboard 1g->512m; mailu reservations; postgres 4g->3g; onlyoffice pids 8192->4096; simpleicons rounding; matomo) and raise the under-provisioned prometheus limit 512m->2g.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.8 594109018a refactor(compose): publish every container port through the container_ports lookup
Take the host IP as an optional third element of each term
([service, protocol, host_ip]) instead of an ip= kwarg, and build the whole
ports: block from declared ports.local/public (host) + ports.internal
(container). Convert every compose template across 84 roles, folding the
remaining raw var/numeric/specific-ip mappings (including mailu's per-interface
mail ports bound to MAILU_IP4_PUBLIC). Multi-term calls render one term per line.

Add the compose-ports-must-use-container-ports lint: it forbids any raw
"<host>:<published>:<container>" publish item under a ports: block and requires
every term to declare ports.internal. Remove
tests/lint/roles/test_swarm_internal_ports.py, now subsumed.

Fix a container_depends_on rendering regression. The lookup self-indented
(default indent=4), so the added 4-space placement + | indent(4) triple-indented
the block. Flip the lookup default to column 0 (consistent with
container_networks), make every call use the 4-space + | indent(4) form, and add
a lint enforcing it.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.8 9f43364c00 fix(apps): swarm-specific deploy fixes (matomo, nextcloud, prometheus, dashboard)
matomo: force-restart the swarm service after patching config.ini.php DB creds (the compose-up handler is a no-op in swarm), extracted into 10_resolve_host_cid. nextcloud: gate the redis PONG wait on the engine being local. prometheus: config 0444 (swarm config objects are root) and gate the host-monitor binds plus privileged cadvisor/node-exporter to compose only. dashboard: probe the public icon URL in swarm.
