kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5.5 df00ff0abf fix(web-app-matrix): turn off Element's forced verification in variant 1
4a56b4c19c set services.element.force_verification to false only for
the SSO variants 0 and 2, on the reasoning that only the SSO specs log
the same account in twice. The deploy's second pass logs the variant 1
administrator (ansible flavor, SSO off, password login) in again. PASS 1
bootstraps the account's cross-signing identity, so in PASS 2 Element
stops on "Confirm your digital identity" ("Use another device" / "Can't
confirm?" / "Remove this device", no skip), and the password-login spec
times out at _shared.js:436 (fork run 40979252521, job 123823820263,
Discourse#1 with web-app-matrix variant 1, all three retries).

Variant 1 now sets force_verification to false like the other two. The
services.yml default stays true, so production keeps forced
verification. No variant exercises true end to end any more; the
follow-up issue restores one.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5.5 4a56b4c19c fix(web-app-matrix): declare Element's forced device verification per variant
Element v1.12.33 (automated bump a8fba45d60, on main) ships element-web
#35364, which turns force_verification on by default. From the second
OIDC login of an account on, Element stops on "Confirm your digital
identity" with no skip button, so the Matrix SSO specs that log the same
account in twice (test-dm-admin-biber.js, test-design.js) never reach the
signed-in UI: "administrator: authenticated Element UI (user menu / room
list / welcome) must render" fails after 120 s (fork run 40625679270,
Matrix#2 and the co-deployed Moodle#2).

services.element.force_verification now carries the platform default,
true as upstream, and both flavors render it (the compose element config
and the MDAD element configuration extension). Only variants 0 and 2,
the SSO rounds, set it to false. Production keeps forced verification.

Cherry-picked from e042c9dbf9 on feature/store-i18n. main has no Element
branding block yet, so the MDAD flavor carries only the force_verification
key in its configuration extension.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5.5 ce9490d317 refactor(web-opt-rdr-domains): serve a per-domain well-known directory, not a Matrix path
045ef095f2 taught the generic redirect vhost a Matrix location and let
web-app-matrix include web-opt-rdr-domains for its server name on its
own. The first put one app's contract into a shared role and made every
redirect source (www, aliases, asset, css) advertise the Matrix
delegation; the second bypassed current_play_redirect_domains and could
overwrite a vhost the server name already had, such as the Synapse one.

Every redirect vhost now serves `/.well-known/` from `<well-known>/<domain>/`
and hands a missing file or the bare directory to `location /` via
`error_page 403 404 = /`, so it still answers 301 with the original
request URI. web-app-matrix only writes its delegation file into the
directory of its server name.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5.5 045ef095f2 fix(web-app-matrix): serve the federation delegation on the server name
The LiveKit JWT service checks each OpenID token over federation
against the user's homeserver. Server discovery found no delegation:
https://<server_name>/.well-known/matrix/server hit the redirect vhost
of web-opt-rdr-domains, which answered 301 to the dashboard and then
404, so the lookup fell back to <server_name>:8448. In compose OpenResty
runs in the host network and answers there; in swarm it publishes 80
and 443 only, the dial was refused and Element Call's token exchange
returned 401 M_UNAUTHORIZED (main run 40017166046, Nextcloud#12).

The role also wrote the delegation to `<well-known>/matrixserver`,
because the file path joined the directory and `server` without a
separator.

The file now lands at `<well-known>/matrix/server`, and the redirect
vhost serves `/.well-known/matrix/` from the shared well-known
directory, so discovery delegates to the Synapse domain on 443 in both
modes. Both flavors share tasks/utils/well_known.yml, which also
includes web-opt-rdr-domains for the server name when no play-wide
redirect claims it, so the delegation has a vhost there too.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5.5 2b04853701 fix(conferencing): give Matrix, Jitsi and BigBlueButton distinct domains
Since #1180, web-app-matrix declares a canonical `jitsi` domain for its
internal Jitsi, also when it uses the shared web-app-jitsi (only the web
health check skips it then). canonical_domains_map checks every
canonical domain for uniqueness, so a host that serves web-app-jitsi on
jitsi.<domain> fails the constructor with
"Domain 'jitsi.infinito.nexus' is already configured for 'web-app-jitsi'
and 'web-app-matrix'" (echoserver, 2026-10-23).

The defaults now use one namespace per owner:
- web-app-matrix internal Jitsi: jitsi.matrix.<domain> (was jitsi.<domain>)
- web-app-jitsi: jitsi.call.<domain> (was meet.<domain>)
- web-app-bigbluebutton: bbb.call.<domain> (was bbb.talk.<domain>)

This changes the public URL of BigBlueButton and of the shared Jitsi on
every host that relies on the defaults.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5.5 9b88fccfc6 fix(web-app-matrix): wire Jitsi, Element Call and Heisenbridge in the ansible flavor
An earlier commit on this branch turned the three off because the ansible flavor ran
them without a published port, proxy entry, domain or certificate. They
now stay on and are wired end to end.

Element Call: MDAD's LiveKit server and JWT service get their own
entities in meta/services.yml with resource limits, local ports and a
public media port (TCP and UDP). The runner container publishes them
through container_ports, and the Synapse vhost proxies /livekit-server/
(websocket) and /livekit-jwt-service/ to them. The JWT service checks
each OpenID token against the user's homeserver over federation, and
federation was not reachable in this flavor: Synapse served it only on
a plain-HTTP listener that the runner published directly on 8448.
Synapse now serves the client and federation resources on one listener,
OpenResty serves the Synapse vhost on 443 and as default_server on the
federation port, the direct 8448 publish is gone, and the role writes
/.well-known/matrix/server as the compose flavor does. With a
self-signed CA the JWT container mounts the CA bundle as Synapse does.

Jitsi: a new services.jitsi entity follows the shared-service contract.
It is enabled in the ansible flavor off tor nodes. When web-app-jitsi is
in the inventory, Element points at that shared Jitsi and MDAD's own
Jitsi stays off. Otherwise MDAD runs its own Jitsi on jitsi.<domain>
with a front-proxy vhost, its web port published to the runner and its
videobridge on a public UDP port. The entity lists the jitsi domain, so
the web health probe skips it whenever Matrix does not serve it. The
jitsi_*_container_network overrides were dropped: MDAD reads none of
them, Jitsi always ran on its own network. Variant 0 covers the shared
case, variant 1 the internal one. On an onion-primary deploy both call
stacks stay off, so Element never advertises a clearnet call surface.
MDAD's Prosody keeps an account's first password, so after a credential
rotation jicofo failed SASL with the new one. The role now derives the
jicofo and videobridge passwords from the macaroon secret and recreates
both accounts on every deploy.

Heisenbridge stays on by default. It runs in the nested host network,
where MDAD's container-name URLs do not resolve, so its homeserver URL
and the appservice URL in its registration point at 127.0.0.1.

A bootstrap that a previous deploy left failed (for example after a
Docker Hub rate limit) is now reset and restarted, so a mode=update
deploy converges instead of failing on the stale unit state.

Playwright proves each path: the RTC spec fetches a LiveKit token from
the JWT service and opens the SFU signalling websocket, the Jitsi spec
checks Element's preferred domain and joins a conference (signing in
through Keycloak first when the shared Jitsi sits behind SSO), and the
Heisenbridge spec opens a DM with the bot and waits for its answer to
"help".

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5.5 94115964b7 fix(web-app-matrix): pull MDAD images through the stack's registry proxy
The ansible flavor's runner starts its own docker daemon, and that daemon
pulled every MDAD image straight from Docker Hub and ghcr.io, past the
registry cache the stack's own daemon uses. MDAD pulls with
`pull: always`, so every bootstrap spent the shared anonymous Docker Hub
quota; locally a single run exhausted it and died with
"toomanyrequests" even for images already on disk.

The role now reads the proxy of the stack's docker.service. When there
is one, it mounts a docker.service drop-in into the runner with the same
HTTP_PROXY, HTTPS_PROXY and NO_PROXY, and pins the proxy host through
container_extra_hosts. When the stack's daemon trusts the registry
cache's MITM CA, the drop-in fetches that CA from the proxy and runs
update-ca-certificates before the inner daemon starts. Without a proxy
on the stack's daemon nothing changes.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5.5 7867a0f037 fix(web-app-matrix): default Jitsi, Element Call and Heisenbridge to off
The ansible flavor turned on MDAD's Jitsi and Element Call stacks and the
Heisenbridge IRC bridge by default, while the role publishes only
Synapse's client and federation ports and Element, and the front proxy
wires only the Element and Synapse domains. Jitsi's videobridge, Element
Call's LiveKit media ports and their web domains are reachable from
nowhere, so the call buttons cannot connect while the stacks still cost
memory and CPU, and hosts moving from the compose flavor gain an IRC
bridge they never asked for.

`services.matrix.conferencing.{element_call,jitsi}` and
`services.matrix.plugins.heisenbridge` now default to false, matching
what production hosts already set per host. The README states the
defaults, including the bridge list, which still claimed several
bridges were on.

The Element Call and bridge-roster Playwright specs skip while the flags
are off. Wiring the ports, proxy entries, domains and certificates stays
open in #1165.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5.5 f77ccf56e8 fix(web-app-matrix): publish Synapse metrics in the ansible flavor
The role advertised `matrix-synapse:9000` to Prometheus in both flavors.
That container only exists in the compose flavor. In the ansible flavor,
which is the default, Synapse runs inside the `matrix` container and had
no metrics listener, so the scrape target was down on every deployment
that pairs Matrix with Prometheus.

The ansible flavor now enables the Synapse metrics listener on 9100 and
the declaration names port and service per flavor, so the target is
`matrix:9100` there and stays `matrix-synapse:9000` in the compose
flavor.

This is the metrics part of b3e0dce578 on `feature/store-i18n`, without
the addon switch that branch introduces around it.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 50b9f60c43 fix(prometheus): resolve the native-metrics scrape target per deployment mode
`native_metrics_target` was a Jinja filter, so it could not read
DEPLOYMENT_MODE: filters see no Ansible variables. It returned
`<services.<key>.name>:<port>` unconditionally, which is `matrix-synapse:9000`
for matrix. Compose serves that name; swarm does not, because `docker stack
deploy` ignores `container_name` and the alias never exists. This repository
says as much itself, through `lookup('compose_only', 'container_name', ...)`.
The target was therefore scraped and refused, and `playwright.spec.js:274`
reported `web-app-matrix: 1 matching target(s) reporting up != 1`, meaning one
matching target whose `up` value is not 1.

It becomes a lookup that delegates host resolution to `scrape_target`, which
was already mode-aware, so exactly one plugin knows the difference between the
two modes. The port has to be handed over explicitly: matrix exposes metrics on
9000 while `services.synapse.ports.internal.http` is 8008, so the existing
internal-port lookup cannot serve this case on its own.

`scrape_target` now refuses `port` together with an explicit `port_kind`.
Before, `port` won silently and the error text still named the
`ports.internal.<port_kind>` path that the call had never consulted.

`native_metrics_apps` drops an app that pins itself to compose through
`compose_mode_force` while the cluster runs swarm, because the scrape target
would then name the wrong object. Only the literal case: matrix declares that
override as a Jinja expression over its flavour, which this lookup cannot
resolve from the scraping role's variable scope, so variant 0 on swarm stays a
latent mismatch.

The two comment lines claiming `container_name:port` went with the change;
after it they state the opposite of what the code does.

Verified by mutation: with the swarm branch of `scrape_target` disabled, the
new test emits `matrix-synapse:9000`, the exact string CI reported.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5.5 d3ca143343 docs(roles): regenerate READMEs for Stalwart as the mail provider
MAIL_PROVIDER moved to web-app-stalwart without a make docs run, so every generated README still drew Mailu as the email dependency. This is the generator output for the current tree: the root role table and each role cosmos now name Stalwart, Mailu loses its dependents, and Stalwart gains its swarm marker, the Tor dependencies and the 0..0 edges.

The hand-written cosmos of svc-net-tor-smtp gives way to the generated one, which no longer shows the SOCKS5 hop through svc-net-tor because the role does not declare that dependency.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 94429e8fc5 feat(matrix): take the Element release that has the invites section
v1.12.28 is the newest tag vectorim/element-web publishes. Read at the artifact
rather than at the tag: /app/version inside the image reads 1.12.28, and the
control on v1.12.27 reads 1.12.27, so the tag does not lie here. /usr/bin/wget
is a busybox applet in it, which the wget healthcheck flavor needs.

It carries 'Room list: add an Invites section' (#34736), the section
9661800cb0 wrote its selector for while the pin stood at v1.12.27 and rendered
no such thing. df19dd103 made that selector independent of the wrapper, so the
expansion loop beside it stops being a no-op here instead of the tile becoming
unreachable again. It also carries a fix for GHSA-wqmv-r2qj-2j9p.

What the bump can reach is bounded and was counted rather than assumed. Seven
of the twelve matrix specs hold no DOM selector at all and speak only to
synapse, which stays at v1.160.0. The exposure is _shared.js with 32, this
role's DM spec with 9 and the seaweedfs spec with 2. Of the shared helper's
selectors, ten carry a fallback chain and three are single-point, none of those
three on an internal mx_ class. meta/csp.yml grants element unsafe-inline,
unsafe-eval and connect-src *, with no hash pin, so a changed asset bundle
cannot break the policy.

Not verified: no deploy ran. The same release reworks the room list three ways
-- the invites section, collapsing sections on drag, a default people section --
and that is the area the DM spec drives, so the specs that touch it are the ones
to read first if the next round is red.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 df19dd103c fix(matrix): match the invite tile on the button, not on a row that is absent
9661800cb0 scoped the tile to [role="row"][aria-level="2"], taken from
upstream's test helpers for Element 1.12.28. meta/services.yml pinned v1.12.27
then and has never held 1.12.28 on any ref, so the selector described markup
the deployment does not render.

Read out of biber's DOM in the trace of the failing job: role="row" occurs zero
times, aria-expanded zero times, aria-label="Toggle " zero times, and every
aria-level in the document is "1" on a heading. The only aria-level="2" in the
whole trace is inside the test's own injected script. The invite is a bare
button in a virtuoso list:

  DIV[data-testid="virtuoso-item-list"] > DIV[data-index="0"]
    > BUTTON[aria-label="Open room Administrator Infinito.Nexus invitation."]

So the tile was never clicked, biber stayed on the welcome screen, and the poll
spent its 120 seconds on a page that could not change. The screenshots of all
three attempts show the same state: the invite row visible in the list, a
device-verification prompt beside it, no room open.

Matching the button directly drops the dependency on the wrapper. The label
prefix and the partner match are unchanged, and "Open room settings" is the
only other button carrying the prefix, which the partner match excludes.

The section expansion stays. It is a no-op against 1.12.27, where nothing
reports aria-expanded, and it is what upstream's helpers describe for the
release after it.

Not verified: the accept step behind the tile. biber never reached the invite
view in any attempt, so which of "Start chatting", "Accept" or "Join" 1.12.27
renders there is unobserved, and the anchored regex covering all three is
carried over untested.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 9661800cb0 fix(matrix): drive the DM invite through Element's new room list
Element 1.12.28 rewrote the room list. Pending invites now sit in their own section that renders collapsed, so no room row exists in the DOM until it is expanded. The predicate iterated an empty list and the poll spent its whole budget with no reachable path to success.

Expand every collapsed section first, then match the row by the shape upstream's own test helpers document at revision fe37d199: role=row, aria-level=2, and a button whose aria-label starts with 'Open room'. Of the four previous selectors, three matched nothing in this build and the fourth reached only the Spaces navigation. Match aria-label as well as text, because Element renders the DM partner sometimes as a display name and sometimes as a raw MXID.

role=gridcell is deliberately not among them: the cell precedes its own button in document order, so break would land on the DIV while Element's handler sits on the button.

The accept regex is unchanged. Element 1.12.28 labels the DM accept 'Start chatting' and still ships 'Accept' and 'Join'; all three are covered and Decline stays excluded. Every click stays a raw DOM click because a persistent device-verification toast overlaps the room list and would intercept an actionability-checked click.

Verified on a local compose deploy of variant 0 with sso and tor against 1.12.28: test-dm-admin-biber.js passed in 4.2m, 7 passed, no failures.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 7623c1680e fix(matrix): pin the MDAD upstream to a commit instead of a branch
ref: master was correct while repo pointed at a controlled fork (251ce17c23). When abee277216 moved repo back to the canonical spantaleev upstream it left the branch ref behind, so every deploy took whatever that branch held at that moment.

MDAD pins the images it deploys. Its commit cb58394faaef (2026-09-16 20:09Z) raised element-web to v1.12.28, which ships the rewritten room list, and the matrix DM spec went red between two CI runs with no diff of our own. The deployed container carried org.opencontainers.image.version v1.12.28; both the mirror and docker.io still served correct v1.12.27 bytes for the tag this role pins, so neither was the source.

40179e6d4a36 is that branch head at the time of this change, so the checkout is byte-identical to what master would give today and only future drift is removed. MDAD still expects migration_validated_version v2026.05.18.0 at that commit, so its migration gate stays satisfied.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 b036f60039 refactor(container_ports): express the remaining published ports through the lookup
The list form could publish a host:container pair and nothing else, so thirteen blocks stayed hand-written: the ones needing a protocol suffix, a port range, the swarm long syntax with mode host, or a container-port-only publish. Each of those duplicated numbers the role already declares in meta/services.yml, which is the drift the lookup exists to remove.

The lookup keeps the list form unchanged for its 93 existing call sites and gains a dict form: transport emits one item per protocol, container 'same' serves the services that cannot remap (STUN/TURN, media relays), mode 'host' emits the long block an edge role needs in swarm so the client address survives the hop, publish 'ephemeral' emits the container port alone, and key names the block for Discourse's launcher file, whose expose: list is what becomes docker run -p there. A declared {start, end} mapping renders as start-end on both sides, so a relay range needs no term of its own.

svc-prx-openresty had no ports block at all and bound 80 and 443 as literals in its template, while torrc.j2 carried a third literal 80 for the hidden service. None of the three referenced the others. openresty now declares the ports, the compose template reads them, and the onion's port 80 comes from ports.onion.http through TOR_ONION_EXTRA_PORTS.

Three blocks stay raw, each with the reason it cannot route through one call: keycloak's sso_proxy maps a published port owned by the consuming role to a container port owned by web-app-keycloak, and matrix's ansible flavor takes element on 8080 and federation on 8048 from the upstream playbook rather than from this repo's ports.internal.

The enforcing lint scanned only files with compose in the name and only double-quoted list items, so nine of the thirteen blocks were invisible to it. It now reads every role template that can carry a ports block, catches unquoted items, protocol suffixes, ranges, flow style and the long syntax, and tracks the block by the indentation of its key: keying on the next line closed the block on anything shaped like a key, which target, published, protocol and mode all are. Under expose: only a real mapping counts, because there the single-segment form documents a container port and publishes nothing.

Verified by rendering all 110 container_ports call sites through the real templar, the real lookup and the real merged applications view.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 dd05caa34f feat(services): require an explicit onion decision per host-bound port
A port under ports.local or ports.public binds an address on the stack host, which is what a HiddenServicePort can forward to. Whether it should be forwarded has a cost in both directions: silently off leaves a service unreachable that the operator believes is on the onion, and silently on publishes a database, an admin interface or a SOCKS proxy to everyone holding the onion address. Neither belongs in a default, so the flag is now mandatory and every false carries the reason it is false.

The first run produced 165 findings, of which 131 were one architectural fact repeated rather than 131 decisions. Four groups are therefore settled once in the lint instead: the proxy-fronted http, sso and websocket, because the node onion already forwards port 80 to the reverse proxy that routes every vhost, oauth2 hop and socket upgrade behind it; the implicit-TLS variants, because Tor is already the transport encryption and container_ports drops those listeners when TLS is off, which an onion deployment always is; the categories a hidden service cannot carry, listed once in plugins.lookup.tor_ports.UDP_ONLY_CATEGORIES, which the lint imports rather than restates; and any entity that already answers the question through exposed:.

That leaves 23 real per-port decisions, each with a reason naming its own consumer. svc-net-tor keeps its own socks, trans and dns off the onion: a published SOCKS port is an open proxy, and SocksPolicy cannot refuse it because the forward arrives from the node's own address.

Mailu turns smtp, submission, imap and pop3 on, which is what makes sending and receiving work over the onion, and leaves sieve off because ManageSieve manages filters rather than mail. Measured end to end through the merged applications view, across all 105 roles the deploy now forwards exactly 25, 110, 143 and 587.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 328113e7c3 refactor(ai): declare the litellm consumer contract once
Fourteen roles repeated the same two lines to say they use the gateway: a
`shared` flag gated on group_names, and an `enabled` flag conjoining that gate
with LITELLM_CHAT_MODEL_SERVED. Both are now single-sourced.

`shared` becomes literal true. The flag means the provider is a shared instance
rather than one deployed per consumer, and a central gateway is always that;
the dynamic form only said "shared if deployed", which `enabled` already
decides. The 50 shared pins under `litellm:` leave meta/variants.yml with it.
The tree had already noticed: 20 of those 50 lines carried
`# nocheck: variants-static-override`, two of them with copy-pasted text about
container_backup. This narrows e5de4e085a for one service key rather than
reversing it; every other dynamic flag keeps the group_names form.

`enabled` becomes `{{ LITELLM_USABLE }}`, defined in group_vars/all/16_ai.yml.

That shorthand is only possible because is_explicit_truth learns about it.
The resolver reads a dependency out of the flag TEXT — "in group_names" in
value — so a constant hides the role id and the provider silently leaves the
static closure of every role referencing it. Measured: the old expression
resolves True, `{{ LITELLM_USABLE }}` resolves False. GROUP_GATED_CONSTANTS
names the constants whose own definition carries the gate, and the docstring
states the obligation: a SPOT of this kind that is not listed there drops its
provider without a word.

The wider fix, accepting any Jinja as dynamic, was measured and rejected: 35
other flags carry a Jinja value without the marker (MCP sidecars, javascript
and SSO gates, recaptcha), and they would all enter closures they are not in
today.

A literal shared flag is no longer dynamic, so test_dynamic_flags wants the
`# nocheck: dynamic-flag` its own message documents for legitimate exceptions;
where a marker already existed the rule list is extended rather than a second
comment added.

Behaviour is unchanged where it counts. The closure keeps litellm with the same
app counts (wordpress 26, openwebui 23, hermes 23, mediawiki 22, flowise 23),
unrelated Jinja still resolves False, and the truth table of the new enabled
form matches the old one in all four served/deployed combinations. Three roles
resolve without litellm, and `git show HEAD:` proves that predates this change:
zammad pins enabled false in variant 0 at line 39, nextcloud at line 97.

Six unit tests cover the resolver, including one asserting that every
registered constant is actually defined in group_vars, so an entry cannot
become a dead promise.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 d5fc099166 fix(matrix): gate the CA binds on the predicate that provisions them
sys-svc-compose-ca writes the CA material for exactly lookup('ca_injected', application_id), which asks three questions per application: has a domain, TLS enabled, mode self_signed. The lookup exists against this drift and says so in its own docstring: anything that reads the mounted file must ask the same three or it points at a path that was never mounted.

The matrix templates asked the global TLS_MODE instead. On an onion deployment TLS is off per application while TLS_MODE stays self_signed, so run 34653754175 logged 'CA trust N/A for web-app-matrix (TLS off/not self-signed) mark done' and the templates rendered the binds anyway.

The rest follows from the timing in that run: the matrix container was created at 05:49:35, the bundle was first written at 05:58:45 by sys-ca-selfsigned. At create time the bind pointed at a path that did not exist, which docker materialises as a directory, and the later docker restart matrix from 02_render_inventory.yml:22 failed on 'error mounting /etc/infinito.nexus/ca/ca-bundle.crt ... not a directory'.

MATRIX_CA_INJECTED holds the predicate once in vars/main.yml, beside MATRIX_CA_MOUNT_PATH, and both templates read it: the outer container bind and the synapse arguments for the nested daemon. The test pins both links of the chain, that the constant is derived from the lookup and that both if lines use the constant, so redefining it from TLS_MODE cannot pass.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 ea85683796 fix(security): hoist uniform credential no_log to the include and mask bridge loops
b3ce43a596 set no_log on every task of two included files, which
test_include_uniform_apply_keyword rejects: a keyword every included task
repeats belongs in the include's apply block. The Cloudflare development
mode tasks and the ChatGPT bridge token tasks now receive no_log through
apply at their include sites. The matrix include had set no_log on the
include task itself, which never reaches the included tasks.

Two loops over MATRIX_BRIDGES were unmasked: the bridge folder creation
and the readiness gate. A loop result prints the whole item, and every item
carries the bridge's database_password, so both printed it at -v whenever
MASK_CREDENTIALS_IN_LOGS is on. The credential lint cannot see this because
the loop variable's name carries no secret marker.

Verified: test_include_uniform_apply_keyword, the credential masking lint,
the task lints and the matrix unit tests pass, and ansible-lint is clean on
the five files.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 b3ce43a596 fix(security): require no_log on every task that carries a credential
At -vvv Ansible prints each module argument and result, so a password in
a command line, a request body, a header or a fact lands in the deploy
log. Nothing enforced masking outside the MCP task files, and no check
looked at parents at all.

A new lint, test_credential_tasks_are_masked, finds tasks whose printed
parts (module arguments, environment, loop) reference an identifier ending
in password, secret, token, api_key or private_key, or
secrets.credentials. A task passes when it or an enclosing block sets
no_log, when every file that pulls it in does so through include_tasks
with apply.no_log or import_tasks with no_log (transitively), when the
secret only reaches a parameter the module masks itself, or when the
module masks its values. no_log on an include_tasks task itself does not
count, because it does not reach the included tasks. The rule can be
suppressed per task with `# nocheck: credential-masking`, now listed in
the suppression catalog, and the lint tests its parent and suppression
logic on synthetic cases.

It found 39 unmasked tasks in 19 roles, all real: join tokens, client
secrets, API tokens in Cloudflare headers, database passwords in
command lines, the ChatGPT bot login body and more. Each now sets
no_log from MASK_CREDENTIALS_IN_LOGS. The sys-dns-hetzner-rdns alias
hetzner_no_log, which only restated that switch, is gone.

Not covered yet: template and copy tasks whose rendered file carries a
secret print it as a diff under --diff.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 a20883600b fix(matrix): gate bridge health on liveness and readiness on a deploy task
304144ce67 probed each bridge's healthcheck at /_matrix/mau/ready. mautrix
sets Ready only after Synapse has pinged the appservice (connector.go
starts the listener, then ensureConnection, then AS.Ready = true), and a
swarm task with a healthcheck stays "starting" and receives no VIP traffic
until it is healthy. The ping could never arrive: Synapse logged 150
ConnectionRefused per bridge, each bridge exited FTL 13, and the stack
never converged (run 34615516009, Matrix#2, job 103327034630).

The healthcheck now probes /_matrix/mau/live, which answers once the
listener is up, before the ping. A deploy task after the Synapse wait asks
every bridge for /_matrix/mau/ready from inside Synapse, over the same
name Synapse pings, so a bridge that never becomes ready still fails the
deploy without gating swarm routing.

The ChatGPT bot is rendered only once its access token exists. Its account
and token are created by stack_host_provisioning after the first stack
deploy, so an earlier bot task failed its login with M_FORBIDDEN until the
converge wait called it stuck. The re-render after provisioning adds it
with a valid token.

Verified in a compose run of variant 2: the readiness task got 200 from
meta, signal, slack and whatsapp on the first attempt. Tests pin the live
probe and the token guard and fail against the previous template.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 304144ce67 fix(matrix): give each bridge declared tokens and a rendered registration, drop the swarm service removal
Every mautrix bridge generated its own registration with -g on start,
with fresh random tokens. Synapse had to read that file from a shared
directory, be restarted afterwards, and on swarm the services had to be
removed first so the registrations could be wiped (93735fd533). The
tokens changed on every redeploy and the deploy depended on a wait for
files a container writes.

Each bridge now has as_token and hs_token declared in meta/secrets.yml
and a fixed appservice_port in its addon. The bridge config reads the
tokens through lookup('config'), and registration.yaml.j2 renders the
registration from that config in the upstream -g format, so both sides
are known before anything starts and stay identical across redeploys.

The files reach the containers as secrets: matrix_bridge_mounts offers a
stack view (top-level definitions, content-hash named by compose_volumes),
a synapse view (one registration per bridge under /registrations, mode
0444) and a bridge view (the config at /config/config.yaml). The bridges
run as the synapse uid with an explicit --config and --no-update, keep
their scratch /data on a 16m tmpfs so hlth-volumes finds no anonymous
volume, and depend on a healthy synapse. Their healthcheck is
/_matrix/mau/ready, which the bridge only reports after whoami with the
as_token and an appservice ping carrying the hs_token, so a healthy
bridge proves the token pair.

The compose tasks lose the compose down, the swarm service rm block, the
registration wait, the permission fixes and both synapse restarts; this
reverts the workaround of 93735fd533.

Verified on the local compose stack: four bridges ready, synapse pings
answered, registration and config sha256 unchanged across a redeploy,
test-bridge-roster and 12 matrix Playwright specs green. A token
rotation (new pair in both files, compose up --force-recreate as the
handler runs it) came back healthy; a mismatched pair left the bridge
unhealthy. The swarm-shaped stack file passes docker stack config with
the 0444 secret modes, the 16 MiB tmpfs and content-hash secret names.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 dcb9ddb9cf fix(playwright): stop stretching waits on server-side clocks by the onion multiplier
The matrix DM spec sleeps 120s before the administrator signs in and 30s
between the two sign-ins, and the rate-limit dialog handler cools down
for 45s, all so Synapse's rc_login bucket (per_second 0.17 in the
compose flavor) can refill. That refill runs on Synapse's clock, yet the
sleeps went through resolveTimeout and became 600s, 150s and 225s over
Tor. They now use fixed constants with the clearnet values, which pass
there as they are. The 5s pause before the marker is sent stays scaled:
Element shares its megolm session through the homeserver, so that one
does depend on the network.

Mailu's two poll intervals (500ms for a visible element, 3s for an inbox
refresh) were scaled as well, so an arrived mail was noticed up to 15s
later over Tor. They are fixed now; the deadlines still scale. Named
constants are what the raw-timeout lints reserve for intervals that must
not scale.

Across runs 34421944328 and 34419507038 the matrix DM test took 960s
over Tor against 210s on clearnet; the two refill sleeps alone account
for 600s of that difference.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 93735fd533 fix(matrix): recreate synapse and the bridges together on a swarm redeploy
Every deploy of the compose flavour wipes /opt/compose/matrix/mautrix/ and
re-renders each bridge config with placeholder tokens, so the bridges generate
new registrations on their next start and synapse has to load them. Compose
gets that ordering from the `compose down` right before the wipe. Swarm had no
counterpart: the bridge services kept running on the deleted bind-mount
directories and never regenerated anything, while synapse was restarted by the
flush and found no registration.

Job 102705652096 of run 34421944328 (swarm, variant 2) hits it on the
credential-rotation redeploy, which changes homeserver.yaml, a swarm config,
and therefore restarts synapse every time:

FileNotFoundError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/data/mautrix-meta/registration.yaml'
    stuck: matrix_synapse

From 05:44:56 dockerd reported "current working directory is outside of
container mount namespace root" for the running slack and signal bridges, and
mautrix-meta, started at 03:50:50, only initialised again at 05:53:11, when its
healthcheck finally replaced it; stack_ready.sh had given up at its 180s grace
long before.

Before the wipe, swarm mode now removes the synapse and bridge services a
previous deploy left running, once from the stack host, so the flush's
`docker stack deploy` creates them together, exactly as on a first deploy
(which converged in about 32s in the same job). Removing only the bridges would
not be enough: a synapse that is not recreated keeps the old tokens, and the
new bridges would be refused before the synapse restart at the end of the file.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 2acf91e186 fix(matrix): pass the CA bundle into the container synapse binds it from
The mdad stack runs its own Docker daemon inside the matrix container, so a
bind source in `matrix_synapse_container_extra_arguments` is resolved in that
container's mount namespace, not on the host. `vars.yml.j2` mounts
`CA_TRUST.bundle_host` while `services.yml.j2` passed only
`CA_TRUST.cert_host`, and those are two different files: the root CA and the
bundle beside it. The bundle therefore never existed where synapse looked.

`docker create` refuses the unit before Matrix logs anything of its own. From
the rescue artifact of job 102465251843 in run 34348821577, the nested
journal at containers/matrix/nested/.../journal.txt:5018:

matrix-synapse[5612]: Error response from daemon: invalid mount config for
type "bind": bind source path does not exist:
    /etc/infinito.nexus/ca/ca-bundle.crt

Five start attempts, the same line each time, and the only error in the 872 KB
journal. matrix-heisenbridge follows it down as a dependency, `systemctl
restart` returns rc=1, the mdad bootstrap fails and the rescue task ends the
play. Not an OOM (exit 1, not 137, `OOMKilled: false`, 9.7 GB free), not disk
pressure, not a failed pull, and 16 % of the job budget spent.

b5fcd535de is where the asymmetry began: it moved this mount from `cert_host`
to `bundle_host` for a good reason -- SSL_CERT_FILE and REQUESTS_CA_BUNDLE
replace the trust store rather than extend it -- and left the passthrough on
`cert_host`. So the bundle stays; what was missing is the line that carries it
in, at the same absolute path the nested daemon asks for.

The test that comes with it reads both templates as text and requires every
CA_TRUST path synapse binds to be passed through at that same path. Rendering
would need a full Ansible context, and the invariant is about what the two
files say to each other rather than about the values. It fails against HEAD,
where `bundle_host` is bound and only `cert_host` is passed. It also fails
loudly if the regex ever stops matching how the extra arguments are built,
rather than quietly guarding nothing.

The cause is proven to the byte; the effect is not observed. `docker create`
never succeeded, so a second synapse defect behind this one would still be
invisible. A local `make compose-deploy apps=web-app-matrix mode=update` with
TLS_MODE=self_signed, grepping the nested journal for "Started
matrix-synapse.service", settles both.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 96408f23a0 perf(healthcheck): let the start window outlast a real boot
start_interval is the cadence while start_period runs, and only while it runs.
Once the window closes the probe falls back to interval, so a service that
becomes ready just after it pays a whole tick anyway and the cadence never
reached it. Six of the seven flavors were shaped that way, Curl worst: a thirty
second window against a one minute interval.

Measured across 151 converge waits in four job logs, 63 sit exactly on a tick
boundary, 36 in the thirty second step and 27 in the sixty second one.
Attributed by application, web-app-seaweedfs is the largest at 1501s over
sixteen waits with a median of 57.7s: it probes with curl and fell straight into
the gap. web-app-zammad probes with connect, whose window is fifteen minutes,
and its 154s median is real boot time with nothing to recover.

So the window moves to ten minutes and the steady state interval to two, and the
flavor overrides that sat below them go: Curl, Wget and Connect lose interval
1m, Http its twenty second window, Nc its ten. Connect keeps fifteen minutes.

Neither number costs anything while a container works. start_period delays
nothing, it only stops failures counting, and interval no longer touches
convergence at all since that hangs on the window alone; it is steady state
load, which drops from 120 probes an hour per service to 30.

Forty six role files follow. Twenty seven declarations go that repeat the new
default or undercut it, an undercut window being the defect itself. Eight
windows longer than ten minutes keep their value and now say why. The literal
blocks and the three Dockerfiles this repository builds spell every timing out,
because outside the lookup an omission takes docker's value and not the
platform's.

A fourth lint rule keeps the shape: start_period must outlast one interval,
checked against the effective values, so raising interval without the window
cannot quietly bring the cliff back.

Two faults in the lint surfaced while building it and are fixed here. It
compared timings as strings, so 600s and 10m read as different values, and it
matched the healthcheck key exactly, so a line carrying a trailing nocheck was
skipped whole, which is how the two swarm-init partials went unexamined.

One regression, bounded. A container that starts and never turns healthy is
neither rejected nor errored, so stack_ready.sh only calls it fatal after three
killed tasks, and each cycle now spans the longer window. That reaches twenty
minutes rather than six, capped there by swarm_stack_converge_retries at 600
with a two second delay, and it lands only on runs that were failing anyway.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 16be22007b fix(healthcheck): spell the timings out where the SPOT cannot reach
A healthcheck written outside the container_healthcheck lookup inherits nothing
from utils/docker/healthcheck, and docker offers nowhere to put a replacement.
daemon.json carries storage, logging, DNS, registries and runtimes, and no
health key at all, so an omitted timing lands on docker's own value rather than
the platform's. The two disagree where it matters most: docker starts a
container with no start period, which leaves start_interval no window to act in.
That is why the hand-written blocks never gained the cadence.

The three images this repository builds itself now carry it. openldap and
postgres also drop to the platform interval, and bluesky gains the start window
it never had:

  svc-db-openldap/files/Dockerfile --interval=30s ... --start-interval=5s
  svc-db-postgres/templates/Dockerfile.j2 --interval=30s ... --start-interval=5s
  web-app-bluesky/.../Dockerfile --start-period=30s --start-interval=5s

Six literal blocks move to the platform interval as well: magento, redis,
elasticsearch, matrix and both sys-svc-rdbms partials. Since start_interval
exists, interval no longer touches convergence and is steady state load alone.

Sixteen values that stay where they are now name the mechanism that keeps them
there. Two are worth reading. web-app-kix overrides start_period and nothing
else on purpose, letting the image's own HEALTHCHECK supply test, interval,
timeout and retries; filling those in would have overwritten what upstream tuned.
The memcached and redis swarm-init partials probe every second and deliberately
run with no start window, which is why start_interval is absent rather than
forgotten.

The rest name their probe: occ boots the whole Nextcloud stack, tor re-parses
its torrc instead of asking a running service, opensearch is still forming a
cluster, matrix waits on a file another step writes to a share.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 d0a8608bfa perf(healthcheck): give every probe the start cadence 42ebd9ea71 added
42ebd9ea71 gave the healthcheck SPOT start_interval, the cadence docker uses
while start_period is still running. A block a template writes out itself
bypasses the SPOT and never gained it. Measured across the repository: 46 such
blocks, 40 of them already carrying start_period, not one carrying
start_interval.

Without it a probe fires only every interval, so a service ready after two
seconds is reported healthy at the next tick and a stack converges no faster
than its coarsest quantisation. That lands in sys-svc-compose's swarm converge
wait, 1551.7s per CI job over 38 stack deploys.

Twenty five of the blocks move into meta/services.yml and render through
container_healthcheck. Each keeps an explicit test rather than picking a flavor:
a flavor would replace the command instead of carrying it across.

The move is lossless by construction. probes.py block() writes
overrides.get(key, default) for interval, timeout, retries, start_period and
start_interval, so a declaration repeating the literal values renders the same
block plus the missing cadence. Checked per block against the old values: the
only difference is start_interval 5s, nothing changed, nothing lost.

Twenty one stay literal. Seventeen interpolate a template variable, whose value
resolves in a scope meta/services.yml does not share, so moving them would be a
rewrite rather than a transcription. Four interpolate nothing and still cannot
move: svc-db-memcached and svc-db-redis probe every second in their swarm
service partial, where a 5s start cadence would report healthy later than the
block already does, and the sys-svc-rdbms and keycloak sso_proxy partials render
for the consuming role's application_id, so their declaration has no single
meta/services.yml to live in. Each carries a nocheck naming its reason.

All twenty one gain start_interval. Three also gain start_period, without which
the key does nothing at all, since it only applies while the start period runs.
That widens their failure tolerance rather than narrowing it: bluesky from 90 to
120 seconds, magento from 50 to 80, the mariadb partial from 180 to 210.

pixelfed spelled its probe as a bare string and now spells it CMD-SHELL. Docker
reads both as a shell command; only the YAML shape changes.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 b5fcd535de fix(ca): extend the container trust store instead of replacing it
SSL_CERT_FILE, CURL_CA_BUNDLE and REQUESTS_CA_BUNDLE replace the trust store;
only NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS extends it. compose_ca.py pointed all four at the
deployment own root CA, so every OpenSSL and rustls client in every container
was blind to every public certificate. Measured here, one variable, same URL:

    unset                          curl https://registry.npmjs.org/ -> 200
a single unrelated CA -> 000 unable to get local issuer certificate
that CA + the system bundle -> 200

PeerTube was the one process that hit it: its plugin install fetches from
registry.npmjs.org at runtime through a client that honours SSL_CERT_FILE, and
it failed identically in compose and in swarm with

    invalid peer certificate: UnknownIssuer

Everything else reaches its artefacts at image build time, or through Node,
whose NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS is additive and therefore kept working.

The replacement was never a posture. e7e8cf8c03 calls these variables an
"env-based CA trust fallback", f1ea036bd2 adds them "instead of falling back to
a plain docker run without CA trust", e79183f96a wires the extra CA in "so npm
traffic through the cache validates". Every commit framed them as adding trust.

sys-ca-selfsigned now builds ca-bundle.crt beside the root CA on every node,
from that node own files: the stack host mints the CA and workers fetch it, so
there is no cross-node dependency. The bundle is the root CA concatenated with
the first present CA_BUNDLE_CANDIDATES entry, the SPOT fc0881ff33 introduced.
The cat argument list is assembled in Jinja, so a host with no public bundle
emits the root CA alone, which is exactly the previous behaviour, rather than an
empty argument that would fail. bundle_host joins the existing stray-directory
sweep and the build runs after it.

compose_ca.py uses the bundle only when the file exists and is non-empty, so a
host that has not built one keeps the previous behaviour instead of binding a
missing path that Docker would materialise as a directory. The php ini, msmtprc
and the Matrix flavour may name the container path with no fallback because the
bundle is written at task 99 and the php ini at task 123: no host can carry the
ini without the bundle.

CA_TRUST_CERT and NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS stay on the single certificate. keytool,
occ security:certificates:import and update-ca-certificates each take one.

The check could not say why, because the action set the file input and moved on: the save button was optional, and if it was not found within two seconds nobody clicked it, the upload never happened, and the failure still read as an object-store problem.

42449ebf0a had fixed a real bug there, isVisible ignores its timeout and never waits, but replaced it with a two second waitFor. Element renders that button after the file is chosen, which is not always inside two seconds on a loaded runner.

Wait for the media upload itself instead. The response wait is armed before the file is set, so it covers whichever interaction triggers the POST, and it gives the flow time rather than racing it. A future failure now separates the two causes it used to merge: Element never POSTed, or Synapse answered with a status.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 ceb7e9e628 fix(penpot,matrix,n8n,swarm-drill): repair four CI root causes
From triage of run 33923190220. Each fix is independently complete.

penpot: ansible templates delegate_to before the task's merged when, and AnsibleUndefinedVariable escapes get_delegated_vars_and_hostname. PENPOT_BACKEND_HOST_NODE is set only by the resolve include, so the bootstrap task hard-failed on every host that include skipped instead of skipping with it. A block-level when cannot prevent this; move the tasks into a dynamic include.

matrix: the MDAD reconfigure looked for volume matrix_matrix_mdad_state (real name matrix_mdad_state) and container matrix-mdad (real name matrix). Both if-bodies were skipped while the task still reported changed, so a rotated S3 secret never reached synapse and every media write got SignatureDoesNotMatch. Move the shell into its own script and pass the real names through the environment. Also add no_log to the vars.yml render, whose diff printed 16 secrets in cleartext.

n8n: when the settings file and N8N_ENCRYPTION_KEY disagree, oclif's findCommand throws for every command, so 'n8n export:credentials' is unreachable in exactly the state that would need it. The re-key is one-way; pin it rotatable: false.

swarm-drill: distros.sh sees only rc=124 and cannot tell a wedged deploy from one the sweep deadline cut short. Say so where the governor caps it.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 e0048f157b fix(litellm): gate consumers on a served model, not on the gateway being deployed
The gateway publishes only models it has a backend for and renders model_list: [] when neither ollama nor lmstudio is deployed and no OpenRouter key is set. LITELLM_CHAT_MODEL fell back to openrouter/auto without checking that key, so consumers were configured for a model the gateway does not carry and every prompt failed with a 400.

Observed in the Mattermost#1 CI job: litellm.log carries 12 occurrences of "Invalid model name passed in model=openrouter/auto" next to 400 Bad Request, and tests/test-litellm-agent.js failed on every attempt while the rest of the suite passed.

Make the fallback conditional on the key so the name is empty when nothing is served, promote LITELLM_CHAT_MODEL_SERVED from the role vars to group_vars where consumers can see it (it was the third copy of this logic and the only correct one), and switch the 14 consumers from "litellm is deployed" to "litellm serves a model". The Playwright service flag reads the same lookup, so the spec skips together with the Ansible gate. The bool filter carries weight: the folded scalar yields the string False, which Jinja treats as truthy.

A new unit test renders both expressions against Jinja and pins the invariant that a model name exists exactly when a model is served, including the case where ollama preloads embedding models only.
