An earlier commit on this branch turned the three off because the ansible flavor ran
them without a published port, proxy entry, domain or certificate. They
now stay on and are wired end to end.
Element Call: MDAD's LiveKit server and JWT service get their own
entities in meta/services.yml with resource limits, local ports and a
public media port (TCP and UDP). The runner container publishes them
through container_ports, and the Synapse vhost proxies /livekit-server/
(websocket) and /livekit-jwt-service/ to them. The JWT service checks
each OpenID token against the user's homeserver over federation, and
federation was not reachable in this flavor: Synapse served it only on
a plain-HTTP listener that the runner published directly on 8448.
Synapse now serves the client and federation resources on one listener,
OpenResty serves the Synapse vhost on 443 and as default_server on the
federation port, the direct 8448 publish is gone, and the role writes
/.well-known/matrix/server as the compose flavor does. With a
self-signed CA the JWT container mounts the CA bundle as Synapse does.
Jitsi: a new services.jitsi entity follows the shared-service contract.
It is enabled in the ansible flavor off tor nodes. When web-app-jitsi is
in the inventory, Element points at that shared Jitsi and MDAD's own
Jitsi stays off. Otherwise MDAD runs its own Jitsi on jitsi.<domain>
with a front-proxy vhost, its web port published to the runner and its
videobridge on a public UDP port. The entity lists the jitsi domain, so
the web health probe skips it whenever Matrix does not serve it. The
jitsi_*_container_network overrides were dropped: MDAD reads none of
them, Jitsi always ran on its own network. Variant 0 covers the shared
case, variant 1 the internal one. On an onion-primary deploy both call
stacks stay off, so Element never advertises a clearnet call surface.
MDAD's Prosody keeps an account's first password, so after a credential
rotation jicofo failed SASL with the new one. The role now derives the
jicofo and videobridge passwords from the macaroon secret and recreates
both accounts on every deploy.
Heisenbridge stays on by default. It runs in the nested host network,
where MDAD's container-name URLs do not resolve, so its homeserver URL
and the appservice URL in its registration point at 127.0.0.1.
A bootstrap that a previous deploy left failed (for example after a
Docker Hub rate limit) is now reset and restarted, so a mode=update
deploy converges instead of failing on the stale unit state.
Playwright proves each path: the RTC spec fetches a LiveKit token from
the JWT service and opens the SFU signalling websocket, the Jitsi spec
checks Element's preferred domain and joins a conference (signing in
through Keycloak first when the shared Jitsi sits behind SSO), and the
Heisenbridge spec opens a DM with the bot and waits for its answer to
"help".

The matrix DM spec sleeps 120s before the administrator signs in and 30s
between the two sign-ins, and the rate-limit dialog handler cools down
for 45s, all so Synapse's rc_login bucket (per_second 0.17 in the
compose flavor) can refill. That refill runs on Synapse's clock, yet the
sleeps went through resolveTimeout and became 600s, 150s and 225s over
Tor. They now use fixed constants with the clearnet values, which pass
there as they are. The 5s pause before the marker is sent stays scaled:
Element shares its megolm session through the homeserver, so that one
does depend on the network.
Mailu's two poll intervals (500ms for a visible element, 3s for an inbox
refresh) were scaled as well, so an arrived mail was noticed up to 15s
later over Tor. They are fixed now; the deadlines still scale. Named
constants are what the raw-timeout lints reserve for intervals that must
not scale.
Across runs 34421944328 and 34419507038 the matrix DM test took 960s
over Tor against 210s on clearnet; the two refill sleeps alone account
for 600s of that difference.

Sixteen role specs decided something immediately after an action that had not settled, because locator.isVisible() discards the timeout it is handed. Three shapes: an assertion that could never fire, a login outcome read off the DOM before the app re-rendered, and a branch that selected a locator by whether an iframe had mounted yet.
The ones that could never fire are the worst of them. taiga test-seaweedfs polled for a rejection toast right after saveAction.click(), so a real upload rejection was swallowed and misreported as a SeaweedFS storage failure; friendica ldapauth decided whether to run its wrong-password test at the instant a fresh context finished goto, so a slow render skipped a security check silently. wordpress test-discourse-roundtrip picked titleBox by whether the Gutenberg iframe had mounted and, when it had not, bound the wrong one and then burned the full budget failing with a misleading message.
Every conversion keeps the control flow: the .catch(() => false) fallback stays, so a waitFor that throws still yields the boolean the caller expects. Twenty of the twenty-two waits use base 2000, one 3000, one 5000. resolveTimeout multiplies by five on an onion target, so the common case is ten seconds there. Across thirteen onion traces the largest wait of any kind that ever succeeded was 790 ms, so ten seconds is a twelvefold margin; the bases started higher and were pulled down because a swallowed deadline is a duration in disguise - where the optional element is normally absent, the full timeout is paid on every run, including green ones.
Not exercised: no spec was run. Three of these make a test stricter, so a job that turns red on them is surfacing a real failure that was previously hidden, not regressing.

Over Tor the redirect chain behind a login/logout/OIDC click routinely exceeds Playwright's fixed 30s action timeout, so the click throws before the flow's scaled waits run. Sweep all role Playwright suites and the shared persona helpers: give every navigation/auth-transition click an onion-scaled timeout (.click({ timeout: resolveTimeout(30_000) })) and route the remaining raw millisecond literals (timeout options, waitForTimeout, sleep-promise setTimeout, positional wait args) through resolveTimeout. Local UI clicks (menus, toggles, modal dismissals, DOM clicks inside evaluate) stay untouched.
Two new lints keep it that way: test_no_raw_timeout_literals forbids raw numeric timeout literals in Playwright specs (opt-out: nocheck: raw-timeout), test_persona_clicks_scaled requires every click in the shared persona auth flows to carry a resolveTimeout timeout (opt-out: nocheck: unscaled-click).
Verified: node --check on all 133 changed JS files, all 13 playwright lints green, make autoformat clean, make test green (2745+196+163+4 tests OK).

- _shared.js: wrap the boot-poll delay in resolveTimeout (raw-timeout lint)
- 02_render_inventory: docker -> container wrapper (engine-abstraction lint)
- seaweedfs: api becomes the primary canonical so the deploy readiness
probe hits a served vhost when the frontend (filer/master) is disabled
- seaweedfs frontend: exempt from variant pinning — the onion gate is a
hard invariant, no variant may force the frontend on a tor node
- test_coverage: add the `# nocheck: variants-coverage` exempt (same
mechanism as bond-baseline) for such invariant flags

Synapse on an onion node could never complete SSO: it has no Tor, so the
http://auth.<onion> issuer was unresolvable server-side (discovery/jwks/
token), and Synapse hard-rejects non-https issuers on top.
- runner/hostpin.{sh,service}: pin the onion auth host to the runner's real
default gateway (node OpenResty) from /proc/net/route, Before=docker.service
so nested containers see it from their first request; host-gateway is
unusable in nested DinD (resolves to the inner docker0)
- Synapse bind-mounts the runner's /etc/hosts; token iss stays the onion
issuer the browser uses
- bootstrap.service: PassEnvironment (systemd units do not inherit container
env; MATRIX_MDAD_PLAYBOOK_TAGS only worked via its fallback default)
- vars.yml.j2: skip_verification on onion (Synapse's escape hatch for
issuers without https; Tor provides transport security per RFC 7686)
- 02_render_inventory: drop the MDAD bootstrap marker + bounce the runner on
inventory changes — mode=update reconfigures the nested stack at all now
- MATRIX_SERVER_NAME follows matrix_domain onto the onion so MXIDs built from
it (DM spec, bridge configs) reference users that exist
- specs: shared Firefox onion fixture (16 files), gotoElementApp reload-retry
against Element's Tor-triggered init race, seaweedfs spec gates on the
filer frontend, env uses canonical_url consumer=
Verified in-container: SSO 302 to onion Keycloak, admin+biber OIDC login,
E2EE DM admin<->biber, CSP — all green over Tor.

New lint test_no_raw_goto.py forbids raw `page.goto(...)` in role playwright specs + persona flows (the gotoOnion wrapper in personas/utils is exempt) so navigation retries transient Tor-transport errors over onion. Migrates every raw call across ~75 roles (343 sites) to `gotoOnion(page, ...)` and teaches gotoOnion to detect relative onion URLs (`isOnionCanonical`). gotoOnion is a behaviour-identical drop-in on clearnet (single attempt, same return). Verified: no-raw-goto lint green, eslint 0 errors, make test green.

Add the global TIMEOUT_FACTOR and a shared timeouts.js helper: resolveTimeout(base) scales by TIMEOUT_FACTOR and, over a .onion target, an extra multiplier, so Tor's per-request latency no longer trips hard-coded timeouts. Migrate every raw timeout in the specs (timeout:/timeout=/setTimeout/waitForTimeout) to resolveTimeout, stage the helper in all three staging paths, and add test_no_raw_timeouts to forbid raw numeric timeouts. Clearnet behaviour is unchanged (factor 1: resolveTimeout(N) === N).

Implements docs/requirements/021-sso-flavor-migration.md atomically:
* Schema: every role's meta/services.yml replaces the parallel
`oauth2:` / `oidc:` top-level blocks with a single `sso:` block
carrying `enabled`, `shared`, and a `flavor` discriminator
(`oidc` | `oauth2` | `saml`; default `oidc`). Flavor-specific
sub-keys live under `sso.<flavor>.*` (`sso.oauth2.{origin,acl,
allowed_groups}`, `sso.oidc.plugin`).
* Provider role: roles/web-app-oauth2-proxy/ is deleted in its
entirety; its 5 sidecar templates move under
roles/web-app-keycloak/templates/sso_proxy/, and the per-consumer
rendering task lives at roles/web-app-keycloak/tasks/sso_proxy.yml.
web-app-keycloak now declares `provides: sso`.
* Runtime: new resolver utils/roles/applications/services/sso.py
centralises the SSO predicates (`is_enabled`, `is_proxy_gated`,
`is_oidc_native`) and the oauth2 sub-values
(`oauth2_origin_{host,port}`, `oauth2_acl`, `oauth2_allowed_groups`).
Three lookup plugins consume the resolver: `sso` (single-app
predicate access), `sso_proxy_consumers` (enumerates oauth2-flavored
consumers), `sso_oidc_plugin` (renamed from `oidc_flavor`, Nextcloud
plugin selector). sys-stk-backend, sys-svc-compose, sys-svc-proxy
and plugins/filter/compose_volumes.py all gate on
`lookup('sso', ..., 'is_proxy_gated')` instead of manually combining
`enabled` and `flavor`.
* Identifier renames repo-wide: `services.<entity>.ports.local.oauth2`
→ `ports.local.sso`; `PORT_BANDS.local.oauth2` → `PORT_BANDS.local.sso`;
`OAUTH2_PROXY_*` env/Jinja vars → `SSO_PROXY_*`;
`oauth2_proxy_cookie_secret` → `sso_proxy_cookie_secret`;
`OAUTH2_SERVICE_ENABLED` + `OIDC_SERVICE_ENABLED` collapse into
`SSO_SERVICE_ENABLED`; Playwright gating helpers
(isServiceEnabled/skipUnlessServiceEnabled/requireService/safeIsEnabled/
safeSkipUnlessEnabled) move from `oidc`/`oauth2` to `sso`.
* Dual-block resolution: per req's Background-Table, web-app-bookwyrm
is `flavor: oauth2`; web-app-gitea and web-app-friendica keep
`flavor: oauth2` with their existing `oauth2.acl.blacklist`
(/user/login) and `oauth2.acl.whitelist` (federation + discovery
endpoints) — preserving the operative oauth2-proxy gating.
* Tests: the two mutual-exclusion guards
(tests/integration/iam/oauth2_oidc/test_mutual_exclusive.py and
test_acl_mutual_exclusive.py) are deleted per Decision #10;
test_oauth2_contract.py is renamed and rewritten to
test_sso_contract.py, asserting that `flavor: oauth2` roles carry
`oauth2.origin.{host,port}` plus `ports.local.sso`; test_sso.py
(web-app integration) now requires the unified `sso:` block with an
explicit flavor or a `# nocheck: sso` opt-out; new
tests/lint/repository/no_legacy_sso_paths/ guards the source tree
against re-introducing the legacy strings.
* Docs: req 21 itself has every AC checked off, and reqs 006, 008,
009, 013, 015, 016, 019, 020 plus 10+ role READMEs and
docs/contributing/actions/testing/suppression.md are updated to the
unified SSO naming.
Empirically validated end-to-end against the validation app set
(web-app-keycloak, web-app-nextcloud, web-app-bookwyrm, web-app-gitea,
web-app-friendica, web-app-dashboard) in matrix variants 0 and 1; v2
also passes the 4 target roles' Playwright after a documented
pre-existing KC_HOSTNAME-drift workaround (separate concern, not
caused by this refactor).
BREAKING CHANGE: every consumer of `services.oauth2.*`,
`services.oidc.*`, `OAUTH2_PROXY_*`, `OAUTH2_SERVICE_ENABLED`,
`OIDC_SERVICE_ENABLED`, `oauth2_proxy_cookie_secret`,
`oauth2_proxy_application_id`, `ports.local.oauth2`, the
`web-app-oauth2-proxy` role, or the legacy gating helper service names
(`oidc`/`oauth2`) must migrate to the unified `sso` shape documented
in docs/requirements/021-sso-flavor-migration.md.

Role-code (meta/services.yml + tasks/01_docker.yml):
- Drop the services.matrix.setup gate. The flag defaulted to false and
silently skipped admin + chatgptbot creation, leaving Synapse with 0
users. Both tasks now run unconditionally; idempotency comes from the
failed_when filter on "User ID already taken" instead of the previous
ignore_errors: true that masked every other error class too.
- exec -it → exec -T: Ansible has no TTY, so -it failed silent and the
ignore_errors swallowed it; -T is the no-tty/no-stdin variant the
Ansible command module expects.
- Quote every template var passed to register_new_matrix_user with
`| quote`. The administrator password (`'$tr0ng€xampl3PW\!`) carries
characters that break the command module's shlex split otherwise.
- no_log: MASK_CREDENTIALS_IN_LOGS so plaintext passwords stop leaking
into Ansible output.
Playwright spec (files/playwright/):
- Split playwright.spec.js (643 lines, single file) into _shared.js +
six test-*.js modules following the taiga/nextcloud/pixelfed pattern.
Each scenario is now individually grep-able and inspectable from the
reporter output instead of all sharing the playwright.spec.js:NNN
prefix.
- Add test-login-admin-native.js: native password login for the
administrator persona, gated to OIDC-off variants
(`test.skip(oidcServiceEnabled, ...)`). Reuses the existing
signInViaElementPassword helper.
- test-dm-admin-biber.js: add `skipUnlessServiceEnabled("oidc")` —
biber only exists in Synapse via Keycloak first-login federation,
so the DM scenario is structurally impossible without OIDC.
