kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 c55f508e05 feat(readme): draw mandatory and disabled service relations
The cosmos generator linked a consumer to its provider only through an
'<role>' in group_names reference or an explicit provides: name. A hard
dependency has neither -- pinning the provider on unconditionally is
exactly what removes the Jinja reference the generator was reading -- so
web-svc-asset's bond to web-svc-file vanished from the diagram the moment
it became binding. Match a service key against the provider's own primary
key from the registry, in both directions.

Services the role turns off drew a solid 1:1 edge, claiming a mandatory
relationship for something that carries nothing at deploy time. They now
render as a red 0..0 edge; edge merging gained a real precedence so a
provider consumed through two keys stays live when only one is off.

Named colour, not hex: a '#' opens an entity code in the mermaid lexer and
turns the whole diagram into a parse error on GitHub.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 a46348b6cf refactor(handlers): bind notify to a listen topic, not to a name
A handler name was doing two jobs at once: the line an operator reads in the
play output, and the identifier a `notify:` binds to. The two pull in opposite
directions -- the log wants "restart the SSH service, with diagnostics", the
binding wants a token that survives quoting, YAML flow style and a shell
round-trip -- and a name that changes for readability silently changes which
handler runs.

Every handler that a notify reached by name now carries a `listen:` with that
exact wording, so the binding is explicit before anything is renamed. The
topics themselves become identifiers: `compose up` reads `compose-up`,
`Restart NFS ganesha` reads `restart-nfs-ganesha`, 22 of them across both
sides of every notify. Where the topic is assembled at runtime, both branches
moved together: the conditional in sys-service carries two literals, and the
LDAP renderer interpolates `import-{{ folder }}-ldif-files`, which is what
makes those handlers reachable at all.

Freed from the binding, the names take the emoji prefix every other task line
already has.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 5c60a1f63e fix(gitlab): create the MCP token owner through the service
A bare User.new(...).save! leaves the personal namespace unbuilt on this generation and dies with "Namespace can't be blank". Users::CreateService builds it and takes the organization, so the default organization is resolved first and passed as organization_id.

Three abort markers replace silent continuation: no default organization, a failed create, and a user still missing after a reported success.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 e16eb5728d test(lint): drop the minimal variant's exemption from the onion
72fd9c870 required the onion in every variant but exempted variant 1, on the
argument that the minimal round is the one place the stack runs without it. That
argument does not hold: the onion is part of the deployment under test, not a
feature bolted onto the full shape. A round that skips it is not a smaller
deployment, it is a different one.

So the exemption is gone and 95 variant-1 entries pin the onion on. Two
exclusions remain, both read from data rather than a comment: a role with no tor
block has no onion to pin, and a role whose meta/services.yml pins tor.enabled to
a literal false has already declared it has none.

That put the rule in conflict with test_coverage, which requires both polarities
of every dynamic flag: with tor on everywhere, the false side has no variant left
to live in. 94 roles take the exemption that contract already provides for
exactly this - "flags whose group-derived value is a hard invariant that variants
must never override", the same one 4e6ef2542 used for the seaweedfs frontend.
web-app-nextcloud needs none: its variant 8 pairs the clearnet-only PeerTube and
keeps the false polarity.

Measured, because the declaration is not what CI runs. assign_tor gives the onion
to every second capable entry with the run number as the parity switch, so more
capable variants do not mean proportionally more onion jobs: across five roles
and 21 entries the count goes 8 -> 10 on an even run and 9 on an odd one. The
clearnet path also survives - checkmk reports v1=false on run 0 and v1=true on
run 1, so both states are still covered across two consecutive runs. What the
94 markers give up is a declarative guarantee in variants.yml, not the coverage
itself.

The real cost is weight, not job count. web-app-nextcloud variant 1 goes from
3.09GB reservation / 7.27GB limit to 18.26GB / 43.01GB once svc-net-tor and its
closure join, so the cheap round is no longer cheap. Every variant stays under
the 32/64GB budget, and the same effect applies to the other 94 unmeasured.

Verified: tests/lint 336 passed / 307 subtests, tests/integration/roles/meta/
variants plus the role-meta lints 39 passed. The rule was checked in both
directions - it reported the variant-1 offenders before the flips and none after.

Not measured: what the heavier rounds do to wall-clock, against swarm jobs capped
at 355 minutes and one that has hit that ceiling before.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 ab72cff929 test(lint): require the onion in every variant, not just SSO ones
7a70d27b7 made a variant that switches SSO on also switch the onion on, because
that pairing is where the platform breaks in ways clearnet never shows. The same
argument reaches further than SSO: a Secure cookie is dropped, an https identity
provider refuses to embed, and crypto.subtle is undefined for any feature on a
non-secure origin, not only for a login. A variant that never runs the onion is
not testing the deployment users get.

So the rule now covers every variant of a role that declares a tor block.
Variant 1 stays exempt - it is the minimal, partner-free round every role
declares and the one place the stack is exercised without the onion at all - and
a role whose meta/services.yml pins tor.enabled to a literal false is skipped
outright, because that declaration already says the role has no onion and needs
no comment repeating it.

That found 137 variants. 101 were variant 1. Of the rest, 28 are the LDAP-only
auth-isolation rounds, which gain real coverage from running LDAP over the onion
and are flipped on here. Four cannot: svc-net-tor is the provider itself, and
nextcloud's variant 8 pairs the clearnet-only PeerTube. Both carry a marker
naming the reason; opentalk and coturn need none, since their services.yml pins
the literal false the rule now reads.

Flipping them exposed a contract that contradicted itself. test_auth_isolation
and test_non_baseline_explicit_disables demanded `shared: false` beside
`enabled: false`, while variants-static-override flagged that same line as a
static override - which is why all 133 of them carried a nocheck marker. The
demand only makes sense where `shared` is dynamic: a literal base value cannot
leak through deep-merge, so restating it protects nothing. Both contracts now
ask for it only in that case, and the 133 lines are gone.

The result is a stricter rule with fewer lines: 189 insertions against 193
deletions.

Verified: tests/lint 336 passed / 307 subtests, tests/integration/roles 107
passed / 610 subtests. The rule is checked in both directions - it reported 137
offenders before the resolution and none after.

Not measured: 28 additional onion rounds cost matrix wall-clock, against swarm
jobs already capped at 355 minutes and one that has hit that ceiling before.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 b2a0a317fa refactor(tor): loosen the onion bond to 0.5
Every variants.yml header states the rule the bond feeds: variant 0 carries each
tightly-coupled (bond>=1, same-host) service, while loosely-coupled (bond<1,
separate-host) partners are excluded from the closure and distributed across
later variants to keep every host under budget. tor was declared bond: 1 in all
101 consumers, so it had to sit in every variant-0 closure.

It does not belong there. The onion is a separate-host provider reached over the
node's hidden service, the same shape as the bridged partners that already carry
0.5, and f1dff50fb established both the reasoning and the precedent when it
dropped xwiki and bigbluebutton from 1 to 0.5: bridged partners with their own
role and their own spec, whose bond declaration was the outlier rather than
their placement.

This also unblocks the variant-level tor contract. Requiring a non-baseline
variant to pin the onion on while tor still counted as tightly coupled would
have pulled variant 0's closure requirements along with it.

Verified: tests/lint 336 passed / 307 subtests and tests/integration/roles 107
passed / 610 subtests, including test_resource_budget over every variant's
deduplicated footprint and the bond-aware test_order closure.

Not measured, and the honest cost: f1dff50fb's own caveat applies unchanged
here. Whether redistributing a service out of the baseline closure buys back
wall-clock is not established; role-runtimes has the per-role seconds and no run
has been made with this shape.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 642055a20a style(e2e): drop the timeout argument isVisible discards
Playwright declares the timeout option on locator.isVisible() and isHidden() as deprecated and ignored: both return immediately and never wait. Passing resolveTimeout(10_000) to one therefore changes nothing at runtime and only tells the reader a wait happened that never did. That reading is what let 7538b8a0b conclude two genuine call sites were fine, and what hid the false negative b97cf8888 had to fix.

Sixty call sites across fifty-eight role-local specs lose the argument and nothing else. Every added line in this commit is a bare isVisible(); a grep for added lines that are not one returns zero, so a behaviour change cannot have entered here. Files whose diff also alters waiting semantics are deliberately not part of this commit.

A repository lint added in b97cf8888 keeps the construct out. It matches isVisible and isHidden only, because isChecked, isDisabled, isEditable and isEnabled take a real timeout.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 2389b6e38b fix(gitlab): discover the OIDC issuer over the scheme it actually uses
GitLab could not log anyone in through Keycloak on an onion deployment. The sign-in page carried the omniauth flash: Could not authenticate you from OpenIDConnect because Ssl connect returned=1 errno=0 peeraddr=172.30.0.10:443 state=error: tlsv1 unrecognized name (ssl alert number 112), and gitlab-webservice logged OpenIDConnect::Discovery::DiscoveryFailed eleven times.

The openid_connect gem rebuilds the well-known URL and never reads the scheme of the issuer. Its config resource also drops the port when it is 80 or 443, so http://auth.onion loses port 80 and URI::HTTPS.build puts 443 back. The hidden service publishes port 80 only, so 443 reaches the SNI-less default listener, which answers ssl_reject_handshake - alert 112, exactly the string in the flash.

An initializer sets SWD.url_builder and WebFinger.url_builder to URI::HTTP when the issuer is plaintext. These are the same two lines web-app-decidim already ships for the identical bug, and this repo has one such fix per role for zammad, mastodon, decidim and peertube; gitlab was the gap. The mount copies the smtp_settings.rb initializer pattern onto webservice and sidekiq.

The scheme test lives in the ruby file rather than in the render and mount conditions, which both gate on services.sso.enabled alone. Two separately spelled conditions could drift once an inventory sets OIDC_OVERRIDE.URL, and would then either render a file that is never mounted or mount one that was never rendered.

Boot safety: omniauth_openid_connect and openid_connect are default-group Gemfile entries without require: false, so Bundler.require loads them before the initializers run, and openid_connect requires swd and webfinger itself. Both writers are public and assign an ivar. GitLab never assigns url_builder anywhere.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 6e93862dd5 refactor(gitlab): ship the config trees as swarm configs, not host binds
0bf1e8ef8 replaced Omnibus with the Cloud Native composition and brought nine
bind-mounted config trees with it. Their source directories are created by
tasks/01_config.yml, undelegated, so only on the play host; the peer-replication
branches in sys-svc-compose/tasks/utils/_render_one_template.yml:36-56 are gated
on `not IS_STACK_HOST` and skip entirely when the play targets the manager
alone. Under swarm any task scheduled on a worker therefore found no bind
source, was Rejected permanently, and stack_ready.sh reported "stuck:
gitlab_shell". The nextcloud-6 job dies there, before its own role runs.

Pinning the role to managers would fix the symptom and give up the distribution
the CNG split exists for. Swarm already solves this: it hands a config or secret
to every node that runs a task, so nothing has to pre-exist anywhere. The nine
trees become 26 per-file entries, and gitaly, shell, workhorse, webservice,
sidekiq and migrations are schedulable again with no placement constraint.

One mount moves on purpose. The gitaly image sets CONFIG_TEMPLATE_DIRECTORY=
/etc/gitaly and ships config.toml.tpl there, and entrypoint.sh calls
`set-config "$CONFIG_TEMPLATE_DIRECTORY" "${CONFIG_DIRECTORY:=$CONFIG_TEMPLATE_DIRECTORY}"`
under `set -eo pipefail` -- so a read-only config at /etc/gitaly/config.toml
would be overwritten and crash-loop the container. Pointing the variable at
/etc/gitaly/templates leaves no .tpl for set-config to expand (nullglob) and
gitaly still finds the file, because process-wrapper derives
GITALY_CONFIG_FILE="${GITALY_CONFIG_FILE:-$CONFIG_TEMPLATE_DIRECTORY/config.toml}".
Verified against registry.gitlab.com/gitlab-org/build/cng/gitaly:v19.2.1.

Every other mount lands where it did before: of the 32 config/secret mounts, 5
match an old target exactly and 27 sit inside the directory an old bind
provided. No mount moved unintentionally.

Repeated targets are anchored once and aliased after, so a rename is one edit.
gitaly-config.toml.j2 and shell-config.yml.j2 read their paths from the registry
through the volume lookup instead of repeating them.

Costs, both deliberate: swarm materialises configs and secrets as root:root and
neither emitter supports uid/gid, while GitLab CNG runs as uid 1000 -- so
secrets.yml, both .gitlab_*_secret files and the SSH host keys are 0444 and
readable by any process inside the container, not just GitLab. And a config
carries a content hash, so a one-character edit to gitlab.yml now rolls three
services instead of rewriting a file in place.

Checked without a deploy: validate_volumes_meta reports no violation; both
emitters produce identical configs: blocks under compose and swarm; a file
mounted inside a named-volume mountpoint survives (measured in a container); the
host keys are exactly the static pair 01_config.yml generates; no script or
binary in gitlab-shell:v19.2.1 refuses a permissive host key, and SSH_DAEMON is
gitlab-sshd rather than OpenSSH. make test-lint: 327 passed.

Not verified: nothing here has been deployed.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 700d537855 refactor(mcp): pin the adapter base by tag where the mirror looks
The adapter was the only image in the tree pinned by a hand-maintained digest,
and the pin was never recomputed by anything. It drifted twice: run 31374959721
lost seven of eight jobs to mirror/docker.io/python@sha256:6771159c... not
found, and the renewal to the newest upstream digest earlier today would have
reproduced it, because builds resolve FROM against the GHCR mirror while the
mirror is copied by tag and lags upstream by design.

The base is now FROM <image>:<version>, taken from the sidecar service in
meta/services.yml - the only file iter_role_images scans, so the tag the build
asks for is by construction the tag the mirror was told to copy. The version
moves from the moving 3.13-slim to 3.13.15-slim, which upstream stops rewriting
once published, and which the existing version drift job renews like every other
image.

With the build reading services.yml, the adapter block's digest, image and
version had no consumer left. They are removed together with the schema check
for the digest form, the warn-only drift test, and the manifest_digest helper
that existed only for it. What remains in the block describes the adapter rather
than the image it is built from.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 55f10c459e fix(mcp): pin the digest the mirror serves, not the newest upstream one
Reverts the twelve pins to 9662417a, the digest the GHCR mirror currently
carries for python:3.13-slim. The previous commit renewed them to the newest
Docker Hub digest, which is the wrong registry: builds resolve FROM against the
mirror whenever a mirror prefix is configured, and the mirror is copied by tag,
so it holds whatever the tag pointed at when the sync last ran. A pin ahead of
the mirror resolves to nothing there while a local build keeps working - run
31374959721 lost seven of its eight jobs to exactly that, as
mirror/docker.io/python@sha256:6771159c...: not found.

The external check measured Docker Hub and would therefore have kept advising
the change that breaks the build. It now resolves the source the build uses via
mirror_image, asks whether the pin exists there at all, and only falls back to
upstream when no mirror is configured.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 214e7624bc fix(mcp): pin what the adapters actually build and serve
Three fields pinned artefacts and nothing recomputed any of them.

The adapter base digest was stale for all twelve provider roles: the tag
python:3.13-slim moved to ffb752e1 while every role still pinned 9662417a.
The GHCR mirror copies by tag, so the pinned manifest is one it was never
asked to copy - a mirrored build resolves FROM to nothing while a direct
build keeps working.

adapter.specification_sha256 matched no revision of the file it pins in ten
of twelve roles; three of the old values were byte-identical to the same
role's tools.schema_sha256, so they had been copied rather than computed.
The field is enforced nowhere at runtime, which is exactly why it needs a
check.

Add a hard lint for both offline pins, computing the tool digest with the
adapter's own policy.schema_digest so it cannot drift from the code that
enforces it in production, and a warn-only external check that reports a
base digest the upstream tag no longer resolves to.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 f713ba8350 refactor(credentials): address them at secrets.credentials, like every other meta file
meta/schema.yml became meta/secrets.yml, but its content still landed at
applications.<app>.credentials — the one meta file whose payload did not sit
under a root named after the file. Every other topic obeys that rule:
meta/volumes.yml goes to volumes, meta/rbac.yml to rbac. Credentials now go to
secrets.credentials.

The path exists exactly once, in utils/manager/credential_key.py, and
OVERRIDE_SECTION is derived from its two segments rather than spelled beside
them, so the dotted form used by --set and the nested form used by the
inventory cannot drift. Six consumers read it: the loader, the generator, the
CLI override parser, the two emit helpers, and the four lookup validators.

--set now accepts exactly one key shape,
applications.<app>.secrets.credentials.<key>. The three short forms are
rejected instead of guessed at: the same short key names different credentials
on different apps. That also retired primary_app_id, which only existed to
disambiguate them.

Three defects surfaced while wiring this up. _apply_one_role_schema still wrote
to the old root, so an app's own credentials would have moved while its
providers' stayed behind. web-app-pgadmin reads through
lookup('applications', ...).credentials.<key>, an access path no regex over
lookup('config', ...) could see, and would have deployed with an empty postgres
password. And _META_NON_GENERIC_TOPICS still listed 'schema' — a bare topic
name, invisible to any path search — so the generic file-root loop assigned the
raw schema under secrets and the follow-up write landed inside the cached
document, truncating keycloak's four credentials to one for every later
reader.

tests/integration/ansible/lookups/config/test_credentials_roundtrip.py pins both
directions of the seam and the cache invariant that last defect broke.

Existing inventories still carry the pre-rename root; migrating them is
deliberately out of scope here.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 28475455db feat(mcp): give every provider its own service account from the registry
Nine roles reached their MCP surface as the deployment administrator or with
an account password kept beside the account in credentials. A Moodle site
admin bypasses every capability check, a Nextcloud app password is not
scopable, a Gitea token reads every private repository, and a GitLab token on
root reads every private project. Each role now declares its own principal in
meta/users.yml and provisions it, so the exposed surface is what the service
role permits. jellyfin, zammad and snipe-it kept their account but took its
password from a credential named token; they read the registry too.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 e96c752549 Merge fix/playwright/env-template-gate into feature/svc-net-tor
75 commits: the socialhome role reimplemented against the project it actually
deploys, native-login specs for funkwhale and shopware, a window.open IdP
handoff and a settings-link fallback in the shared persona helpers, a swarm
converge budget that gives up on a terminal task, and a long tail of role
fixes.

Eleven conflicts. The shared persona helpers (keycloak.js, logout.js) take the
incoming structure — they gained real behaviour this branch never had — with
this branch's resolveTimeout convention re-applied over it and
confirmKeycloakLogoutIfPrompted re-attached at every return point; without it
the Keycloak SSO session outlives the logout. playwright.config.js keeps this
branch's version: both sides set actionTimeout, but ours routes through an env
var and 15s is too short behind an onion. socialhome's spec takes the incoming
content — 2dbd6eb10 found the role described the wrong upstream project
entirely — and keeps gotoOnion and expectHstsWhenTls, since demanding HSTS over
a plaintext onion is a false failure. Both READMEs were regenerated rather than
merged by hand.

Three collisions arrived with no conflict marker at all, because each side
changed a different place in a different file:

- group_vars/all/18_swarm.yml declared swarm_stack_converge_retries twice.
Same value, so nothing breaks today; editing the documented one would have
  silently changed nothing.
- svc-net-tor and web-app-socialhome both claimed 192.168.74.0/24. Socialhome,
the newer role, moves to 192.168.75.0/24.
- web-app-socialhome/meta/schema.yml arrived as a new file, so ef5ea7cb5's
rename never saw it. Its credential would not have resolved and the role
would have deployed with an unusable administrator account.

The incoming specs also needed this branch's conventions: raw timeouts wrapped,
four page.goto calls routed through gotoOnion, a request.get given an
onion-aware timeout, and 21 roles marked playwright-service-flag over the tor
block this branch added to them.

make quality green on the merge result.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 ef5ea7cb55 refactor(roles): name the credential file meta/secrets.yml
meta/schema.yml held credential definitions and their runtime values, but the
name said 'schema' and read like structural metadata next to services.yml and
volumes.yml. Nothing in the file is a schema in the sense the other meta files
use the word, and a contributor had to open it to learn it holds secrets.

62 role files renamed. ROLE_FILE_META_SCHEMA becomes ROLE_FILE_META_SECRETS and
keeps its role as the SPOT the path is built from.

Two readers bypassed that constant and spelled the name themselves:
utils/cache/applications.py built meta_dir / 'schema.yml' twice, and
plugins/lookup/application_gid.py carries the filename in the marker list it
detects application roles by. Left behind, the rename would not have raised —
credentials would have resolved empty and the role would have stopped counting
as an application.

kevinveenbirkenbach 838b64a6bf feat(gitlab): proxy MCP through adapter 2026-08-12 02:02:40 +02:00
kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 cfd5c760e2 feat(mcp): separate what the platform permits from what the upstream serves
tools.allowlist meant two things at once: the surface a consumer may reach,
which is a decision of ours, and the surface the upstream offers, which the
vendor changes without asking. Conflating them made a version bump read as a
contract violation, and left no place to record what was actually measured.

Split them. allowlist stays policy; upstream_serves records the observation at
supported_version. State the second only where it DIFFERS, because a provider
that serves exactly what is allowed would otherwise carry the same list twice
and the copies would drift apart. Absence means identical.

The difference between the two measures unenforced exposure: mattermost 103,
gitlab 2, and zero wherever the fields collapse. A non-empty difference is what
tells us a provider needs a gateway in front of it.

Require a non-empty allowlist for an enabled, non-adapter, server-capable
provider. An empty one used to make the probe's comparison vacuous, which read
as a pass while every tool the upstream serves stayed reachable. Nextcloud was
in exactly that state.

Three exemptions, all semantic: an adapter authors its tools here against a
REST upstream, so there is nothing to observe; a provider declared
enabled: false is never admitted; and upstream_serves: dynamic covers an
upstream composing its surface at runtime, which nextcloud does by proxying
MCP servers an administrator configures.

Reject an allowlist naming a tool the upstream does not serve. That found
mattermost's add_user_to_channel, gone since 11.10.0 renamed it
add_channel_member, which would have been advertised and never callable.

kevinveenbirkenbach 0f14d5fe19 docs(mcp): point the role READMEs at the renamed MCP task files

those links resolved to nothing.

kevinveenbirkenbach 77896fba12 refactor(mcp): expose every role's MCP work at tasks/utils/mcp.yml
The reconciler addresses a client with tasks_from: utils/mcp.yml, which
only works when every role offers its MCP work at the same path. The
files were named per role, and on the two agents the work sat inline in
the entry point, where nothing but a full role run could reach it.

The filter docstring pointed at the pre-rename path and now names the
file that exists.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 a423bde6cc refactor(mcp): unify client entrypoints and read provider tokens through one lookup
Every MCP role keeps its task tree under tasks/utils/ without numeric
prefixes, so a caller can reach any of them through include_role
tasks_from. utils/roles/mapping.py holds that path as the single source.

Ansible resolves a relative include against the including file's own
directory when that file was reached by path, but against tasks/ when it
was reached through tasks_from. The same file therefore loaded from its
own role and failed from a caller using tasks_from. Every nested include
now names {{ role_path }}/tasks/utils/..., which holds under both bases,
and a lint walks each tasks_from entrypoint transitively to keep it so.
The exec-gating lint learns the same form, otherwise it loses the include
chain and reports inherited IS_STACK_HOST gates as missing.

The expression resolving a provider's stored token appeared eighteen
times. plugins/lookup/mcp_credential.py replaces it, and mcp_probe_owner
disappears from eight roles: it was only ever a step towards the bearer
and no probe read it.

The Hermes and OpenClaw probes stop aborting the play while it is still
running. Roles deploy in dependency order, so a client probing during its
own role can run before a provider exists at all, and failing there
prevents that provider from ever deploying. The verdict moves to the
reconciliation pass, gated on MCP_RECONCILE_STRICT, which the reconciler
sets and group_vars declares so the readers need no default.

The sys-svc-mcp-reconcile role is added here; wiring it into a stage is a
separate change.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 b1d9b56d42 fix(playwright): block the personas the sso-off variants cannot serve, and stop three claims that were false
The 21 env templates added two commits ago left the persona flags off entirely
in most roles. biber.js has no native-login branch at all -- with
SSO_SERVICE_ENABLED false it never authenticates and then hard-fails at :201
rather than skipping -- and admin.js gates its native fallback on !oidcEnabled.
CI deploys every matrix variant, and variant 1 of these roles pins
services.sso.enabled false, so each of them was a guaranteed red job that had
never been observed because the specs had never run.

Nine flags are static true: chess, confluence and jira pin sso.enabled false in
meta/services.yml with no variant override and provision no native admin, so
there is no login surface in any variant. Eleven follow services.sso.enabled in
the ternary web-app-baserow already uses, for the roles that do have an
SSO-enabled variant where the personas should run. pgadmin and phpldapadmin
lose the credential keys that a permanently blocked persona can never read.

Eleven nocheck rationales cited "the sys-svc-mail integration tests" as the
coverage that justifies not gating on EMAIL_SERVICE_ENABLED. No such tests
exist: roles/sys-svc-mail* contain no tests at all, and
tests/integration/infrastructure/services/test_mailu_dependency.py is a static
YAML parity check. The real delivery coverage is web-app-mailu's own spec,
playwright.spec.js:154. Each is now a fact checkable inside its own role.

Eight more claimed the CSS injector's origin is asserted by the shared CSP
baseline. personas/utils/csp.js:96 bails with `if (!host) continue`, and
injectorBaseUrl("css") reads CSS_BASE_URL, which no consumer role renders --
so the assertion is a guaranteed no-op everywhere. Rewritten to the
mechanically true reason: assertCspInjections resolves the injector through a
computed loop variable, never a literal gate argument, so test_spec_env_gates'
literal-only regex cannot see it.

The CSP hole itself is left standing: rendering CSS_BASE_URL would arm the
injection assertion for every consumer role at once, which is a change of a
different size than correcting a comment.

kevinveenbirkenbach 3e8a4c6cb3 feat(mcp): prove the contract and pin token ownership on the native servers
The eight roles whose MCP server is built into the application now end their MCP
step with the shared contract probe. It builds URL and Authorization header from
the role's own declaration, calls initialize and tools/list, invokes one
deterministic read tool per role, and compares the served surface against the
declared allowlist. It cannot be a Playwright test: the check needs the real
provider credential and a Playwright run would capture it in its trace.

Eleven sites wrote the MCP token into the store under the administrator's
identity while their metadata declared an owner of their own. The schema lint
forbids administrator as a credential owner, so declaration and storage
disagreed, and the probe would have looked for the bearer under the declared
owner and found nothing. They now read the declared owner.
2026-08-06 20:40:01 +02:00
kevinveenbirkenbach 06bc856c32 refactor(mcp): make MCP a role topic instead of a service entry
The block sat under services but never behaved like a service. A service has
exactly one providing role, declared with provides, so the registry can map the
key to that role and consumers bind their flag to its presence. No role declares
provides: mcp. There are seventeen providers and the pairing is done by
allowed_consumers inside the block itself.

Every rule that enforces the service model therefore needed an exemption for it:
a shared-provider suppression in fourteen roles, a playwright-service-flag
suppression, and two freshly added exemptions in the dynamic-flag and
variants-static-override checks. Four independent rules, four escape hatches,
one cause. They are all gone now, together with a bond key that only the
resource budgeter reads and only for entries under services, and a wordpress
addon bridge that pointed at a service block that no longer exists.

The block moves to meta/mcp.yml. The applications loader maps meta/<name>.yml to
applications.<app>.<name> generically, so the move needs no wiring; the file
takes the same shape as meta/rbac.yml. Every config path follows, the variant
overrides are lifted out of their services map, and the vocabulary module leaves
the services package because it no longer describes one. roles_with_service
gains an explicit topic parameter rather than an implicit fallback, so nothing
silently resolves against the wrong container.

Files that are otherwise unrelated to this move are included where the committed
tree would otherwise keep pointing at a path that no longer resolves: thirteen
vars files, eleven playwright env templates and one task file.

kevinveenbirkenbach 10de64ff78 fix(networks): give MCP overlay membership a direction
A provider overlay keyed on services.mcp.enabled and .shared admitted every
MCP-capable role, servers included, because those flags carry no direction. Each
provider's network therefore collected every other provider and the result was a
mesh in which any sidecar could reach any application. The new mcp_client
consumer kind additionally requires services.mcp.direction to be client or both,
and the four provider overlays switch to it.

A sidecar rendered its networks with the same lookup as its provider and
inherited that provider's consumer attachments, which it neither needs nor
should have. own_network_only keeps it on the provider network alone. A provider
whose own topology is default_net contributes no attachment line at all, and a
bare networks: key is not a list, so the flag returns nothing in that case and
lets the sidecar fall back to the project default, which is that provider's own
network.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 92faba5d2d feat(playwright): make the env template mandatory so specs actually run
test_has_spec.py forces every roles/web-app-* to ship a Playwright spec and
calls a missing one a hard error, because the persona contract must never be
silently absent from the deploy capstone. Nothing forced the other half. The
runner discovers roles by rglob('templates/playwright.env.j2')
(discover_playwright_roles.py:53), so a spec without that file is staged
nowhere and executed never.

21 of 76 web-app roles were in exactly that state. Verified rather than
inferred: running the discovery filter directly returns 61 roles and none of
the 21 is among them, `make compose-playwright` refuses without a rendered
.env from a prior deploy, and `git log --all` on those paths shows the file
never existed on any branch -- the single hit is web-app-gitlab on a fork
branch. Their specs have never run once. 15 of the 21 deploy in CI today,
reporting green while their only functional verification never fires.

The new lint mirrors test_has_spec and carries a per-role opt-out that is
used nowhere: uniform beats exceptions.

Every one of the 21 now has a template written against its own
meta/services.yml rather than a shared skeleton -- espocrm splits
ADMIN_PASSWORD from ADMIN_NATIVE_PASSWORD because OIDC_ALLOW_ADMIN_USER
leaves both login paths open, the four permanently auth-less roles declare
their personas blocked instead of shipping a knowingly-red spec, and
web-app-mastodon gained a real test-seaweedfs.js because no honest
suppression existed for a role that does route Paperclip to S3.

web-app-magento moves pre-alpha -> alpha here: it now has a spec that runs,
which is what the lifecycle gate is about.

Six meta/services.yml files change only where adding a template falsified an
existing suppression -- gitlab and shopware both claimed the role 'ships no
templates/playwright.env.j2', which stopped being true in this commit.

Not resolved here, and the adversarial review says so plainly: the specs are
enabled, not proven. None has executed against a live stack. The review found
three classes of defect that land in follow-up commits rather than being
smuggled in silently -- persona blocks that are missing or should be tied to
sso.enabled, eleven suppressions naming a sys-svc-mail test suite that does
not exist, and eight claiming a CSP assertion that cannot fire because no
consumer role renders CSS_BASE_URL.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 946b3769cb feat(svc-net-tor): let CI deploy the role in compose and swarm
modes.compose.enabled and modes.swarm.enabled were both false, and a
stack role is forced host=false, so all three test_<mode> columns were
false and the CI discovery filter (test_<mode> == true) dropped the role
from every matrix. It was resolved into the priority whitelist as a new
role and then silently filtered out again — svc-net-tor was only ever
exercised indirectly, as a dependency other roles pull in.

The flag is read solely by the discovery model and the README generator;
nothing in the deploy path consults it, so this has no runtime effect.

meta/categories.yml pins the whole net category to compose/swarm false,
which fits svc-net-wireguard-{core,plain,firewalled}: none of them ships
a compose template. svc-net-tor does, and is the only role in the
category that does, so it takes the category-modes exemption the lint
provides rather than bending the category default for three host roles.

Regenerated READMEs follow: svc-net-tor now carries its mode symbols in
every cosmos diagram that names it as a dependency.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 c76de1a2d4 test(gitlab): probe the MCP tool inventory, not just the handshake
The probe asserted an HTTP 200 on initialize and treated that as a working MCP
surface. It only proves the path exists and the token is accepted. This role
deploys the CE images while GitLab serves MCP through Duo, which is Premium and
Ultimate only, so an endpoint that answers but advertises nothing was
indistinguishable from a working one.

The probe now completes the handshake and calls tools/list, reading an SSE frame
when the response is one, and reports the count. A separate assertion fails the
deploy on zero tools and names the licence as the reason, which would put this
role behind 'blocker: licence' like web-app-openproject.

The assertion uses two substring checks rather than regex_search: backslash
escaping inside YAML scalars is a trap this repository has been bitten by.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 c0f01ab639 test(mcp): give gitlab, homeassistant and jenkins their own MCP guest spec
The assertions were embedded in each role's playwright.spec.js. Extracting them
follows how the other specs are laid out and completes the set: all eight MCP
server roles now register a guest spec, where only five did before.

Both assertions matter. A non-2xx alone would pass for an endpoint that answers
401 and still names its tools in the body, so the inventory is checked too.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 19eaec2b6d fix(mcp): declare the subject each server actually authenticates as
Four roles declared auth_subject: user while handing the client an
account-bound credential. Nextcloud and Home Assistant mint against the
administrator account, Mattermost issues the administrator's personal access
token, and Baserow creates a dedicated mcp@<domain> account with its own
workspace. The declarations now name what the minting tasks do; Baserow's
README additionally claimed the administrator owns its endpoint, which it
never did.

The tools declarations follow one convention instead of two: the field records
the deployment's intent and the README names the missing enforcement, which is
what GitLab already did and what Baserow and Mattermost now do.

The discovery lookup carries auth_subject through so clients can see the
subject. No consumer branches on it.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 e355bbdb8b feat(mcp): gate Open WebUI tool servers on the serving role's mcp group
Eight server roles declare an `mcp` RBAC role, so the platform mints
roles/<app>/mcp and the administrator joins it. Open WebUI now honours those
groups instead of flattening them to user/admin, and each MCP tool server is
restricted to the group of the role that serves it.

The grant cannot be rendered: Open WebUI matches it against a group id that
insert_new_group mints as a fresh UUID, so tasks/01_mcp.yml resolves the group
after the container is up and writes the grant through the admin API, the way
every instance-minted credential in this repository is provisioned.

Entries render disabled. An empty access_grants is not 'nobody', Open WebUI
reads it as every administrator, and ENABLE_PERSISTENT_CONFIG=false makes the
env authoritative again on every start. Enabling only together with the grant
keeps the fallback at no access rather than too much.

The provisioning account is the role-internal openwebui-api-bot, never a
platform identity: OAUTH_MERGE_ACCOUNTS_BY_EMAIL ships disabled and an OIDC
login whose email a local account already holds is refused, so seeding a
person's address would lock them out.

Known limits are documented rather than claimed away: a bare restart leaves MCP
off until the next deploy, a user's roles list carries no application context so
roles: [mcp] grants every deployed mcp group at once, and Open WebUI drops a
stale membership only while the groups claim is non-empty.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 e3e81e816f refactor(healthcheck): declare probes in services.yml, render them from one lookup
Seven include templates under sys-svc-container decided how a container was
probed, and they read their inputs from template-local `{% set %}` scope.
That scope leaks: a value set for one service silently reached every service
below it, which is how taiga's front and gateway ended up probing a port
declared for a different service, and how bluesky's frontend probed a PDS
endpoint.

Probes now live in utils/docker/healthcheck.py, one class per flavor behind a
PROBES registry, and each service declares its own:

    healthcheck:
      flavor: curl
      path: health/ready
      start_period: 20m

`port_key` picks another entry under ports.internal for the services that
expose their probe elsewhere (keycloak on management, nextcloud talk on
signaling). Without a flavor the entry must carry an explicit test argv, so a
missing declaration fails loudly instead of rendering a probe against nothing.

Rendering HEAD's templates against the new output confirms 49 of 56 call
sites are byte-identical; the remaining seven are covered by an Ansible run.
Three probes change on purpose: erpnext's backend gains a check it never had,
bluesky's frontend drops the leaked PDS path, and msmtp_curl moves from a
hardcoded localhost:80 to the service's own port on 127.0.0.1 like every
other flavor.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 c7ddf6eb24 Merge branch 'feature/swarm-nfs' into feature/svc-net-tor
Three conflicts, each resolved by combining both sides rather than picking one.

compose.yml passes both env vars through to the container: swarm-nfs adds
INFINITO_SWARM_MGR_IP, this branch adds INFINITO_TOR_SOCKS_PORT, and neither
substitutes for the other.

daemon.json.j2 takes the data-root block from swarm-nfs and keeps HEAD's dns
key. The incoming side writes networks.internet.dns directly; lookup(
'container_dns') already returns that value as its clearnet entry and prepends
the docker0 bridge on a Tor node in compose mode, so the incoming form is a
strict subset and dropping it loses nothing.

The WordPress CA-trust addon spec gains skipUnlessServiceEnabled("sso") from
swarm-nfs alongside HEAD's gotoOnion and resolveTimeout, and asserts on the
Plugin Name the mu-plugin header declares - the mustuse screen renders that,
not the filename - with resolveTimeout applied to the literal the incoming
side left bare.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 9e42610c02 feat(gitlab): mint the MCP token through the CNG rails entrypoint
Provision a personal access token carrying the mcp scope through the
rails runner. The role deploys the cloud-native images, which ship no
omnibus gitlab-rails wrapper, so the invocation names the rails binary
under /srv/gitlab/bin.

Attach clients through the role's overlay, keyed on the MCP service
flags, so a client container reaches the endpoint without publishing it.

Record what upstream does not enforce: the mcp scope grants read and
create, GitLab offers no server-side read-only mode, and the only filter
is a per-request header this deployment does not send. The tool policy in
meta/services.yml is therefore declarative, and every call carries the
blast radius of the root account. The endpoint additionally requires
Premium or Ultimate, so a Community deployment cannot reach it at all.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 5 673e994aa7 feat(lint): pin type and resolver on every container inspect
An untyped inspect searches every docker object kind, and a role's overlay network carries the same entity name as its main container, so the call can resolve the network and report a missing State key instead of naming the container. That is how the openresty assert died on every swarm job of run 30709070050.

Extend container-exec-resolver to cover inspect, stripping raw markers and quoted spans first so the flag walker survives Go template format strings. Add container-inspect-type, scoped to roles/ because the collision follows the entity naming convention and the outer act namespace carries no role networks. Sweep 40 call sites; suppress the delegate_to-resolved CIDs and the compose co-location probes with a stated reason.

Move the five container rules into tests/lint/ansible/shell/container/ and drop the container_ prefix from their filenames. Register both markers in the suppression docs, where the resolver marker was missing entirely.

kevinveenbirkenbachandClaude Opus 4.8 4039313266 refactor(tasks): enforce and apply a single task-file numbering scheme
Add tests/lint/repository/test_task_file_numbering.py: numbered task
files use exactly two leading digits, a numbered *_core.yml must be
00_core.yml, per directory the numbers are unique/consecutive and start
at 01 (00 with a core file), numbered includes appear in ascending
order, and shared helpers live in tasks/utils/ instead of the numbered
chain.

Apply it across every role: rename NN_core.yml to 00_core.yml with a
consecutive down-shift of the siblings, move letter-suffix children into
a subdirectory named after their parent task, relocate helpers included
from more than one place into tasks/utils/, and update every reference
(include_tasks, path_absolute, .ansible-lint-ignore, requirement docs).
Legacy narration comments in the touched files are deleted; the upstream
xwiki.properties reference block opts out via nocheck. The unused
MAILU_IP6_PUBLIC var (only ever named in now-removed comments) is dropped.
