3529 invalid comments in 528 files, grandfathered in while the linter
only saw the working-tree diff. Removal ran through the linter's own
collectors, so detection and deletion cannot drift: a comment whose
opener line is blank before it and whose closer line is blank after it
loses all its lines, anything else loses only the comment region, and a
line left holding a bare delimiter goes with it.
Five files keep their comments behind a nocheck marker instead. Four are
upstream configs whose inline docs are upstream's own (mautrix, systemd
journald, nextcloud-oidc-login, MediaWiki). In littlejs the
commented-out entries ARE the deactivation mechanism for an example
tile, so deleting them would delete configuration.

Turn a NAT/edge node into a full Tor v3 onion node: DOMAIN_PRIMARY
becomes the node's .onion, so the whole stack (web, SSO, LDAP, CA)
resolves onion domains and is reachable over Tor without a public IP,
port forwarding, VPS or DynDNS.
- utils/tor_onion.py: offline v3 key mint (address + HiddenServiceDir
key files), verified against a known key->address test vector.
- cli .../inventory/onion: `init-env` pre-mints the node onion, writes
INFINITO_DOMAIN(+_RE) into .env and authoritative key files into
.onion-identity/hs (idempotent). The onion is a deploy-time input;
no in-deploy random minting (that would not match the pre-set domain).
- roles/svc-net-tor: Tor sidecar (Debian-built, network_mode: host),
installs the minted keys, torrc with one node HiddenService + a SOCKS
proxy restricted to loopback/DiD ranges. files/test.sh probes every
served onion domain over the Tor SOCKS.
- tls: .onion -> TLS off (onion v3 crypto is the transport auth; LE
cannot sign .onion) + app-level flavor override.
- harness/DNS: coredns resolves the onion zone via INFINITO_DOMAIN;
skip the clearnet DNS sanity check for onion; raise nginx
server_names_hash_bucket_size to 128 for long onion server_names.
- test-e2e-playwright: gated browser SOCKS proxy (PLAYWRIGHT_PROXY) +
navigation/action timeouts so specs reach .onion over Tor and fail
fast; the onion node points it at the Tor SOCKS.
- docs/requirements/031: full design.
Verified: dashboard + SSO (Keycloak) + 9 apps reachable over Tor
(HTTP 200 through the node hidden service). make test green.

Consumer lookup plugins now reach the merged config through the Ansible
lookup loader instead of importing get_merged_applications /
get_merged_domains from utils.cache. The merge stays one cached
implementation surfaced via the applications/config/domains/users lookups;
consumers call lookup_loader.get(...).run() (the compose_networks idiom).
- get_merged_applications walks the whole meta/ tree recursively
(meta/**/*.yml to applications.<app>.<path>, addons and any depth) and
folds the raw meta/volumes.yml subtree onto applications.<app>.volumes
after the templar render so the Jinja source: strings stay unrendered.
- 31 consumer lookups rerouted; providers (applications/config/
applications_current_play/users/domains) and the raw-volume accessors
(volume/nginx) keep the cache import behind # nocheck: lookup-cache-import.
- New lint test_no_cache_imports_in_lookups enforces the contract.
- nfs_flavor is now the flavor SPOT (svc-storage-nfs-server + nfs_client_src
resolve via lookup('nfs_flavor')); removed the unused STORAGE_NFS_FLAVOR
group_var. Extracted extract_default_credentials to
utils/cache/schema_credentials.py to keep applications.py under the cap.

CI job 77797371504 on run 26428080957 crashed with:
tls lookup: application_id '{{ lookup('env', 'INFINITO_DOMAIN') }}'
not found in domains mapping
`DOMAIN_PRIMARY` is defined in inventories/development/default.yml:20
as `"{{ lookup('env', 'INFINITO_DOMAIN') }}"`. On Ansible 2.18+ that
string carries a `TrustedAsTemplate` tag (it is an
`_AnsibleTaggedStr`). The constructor at tasks/stages/01_constructor.yml:64
wrapped it in `[ DOMAIN_PRIMARY ] | flatten | map('string') | first`
— the explicit `str()` cast strips the trust tag. The resulting plain
string flowed into `CURRENT_PLAY_REDIRECT_DOMAINS.source` as the
literal text `{{ lookup('env', 'INFINITO_DOMAIN') }}`, was passed
through `domain: "{{ item.source }}"` in
roles/web-opt-rdr-domains/tasks/main.yml:14 (one render pass that
produces untrusted content), and finally reached `as_str(terms[0])`
in plugins/lookup/tls.py:39 unchanged. The tls plugin never templated
its arg, so `resolve_term` looked up the literal Jinja string in the
domains mapping and raised.
Two layers, both necessary:
1. plugins/lookup/tls.py:39 — defensively template `terms[0]` through
`self._templar` before string-coercion. Mirrors the idiom in
plugins/lookup/unit_name.py:33 and plugins/lookup/email.py:61. Any
future caller that hands the plugin an unresolved expression now
gets it resolved before the domains-map lookup.
2. tasks/stages/01_constructor.yml:64-65 — drop the
`[ X ] | flatten | map('string') | first` ritual for
`DOMAIN_PRIMARY` and `DOMAIN_HOMEPAGE`. Both are scalar strings in
every known inventory (group_vars/all/00_general.yml:41,43 +
inventories/development/default.yml:20); the over-defensive
wrapper was the trust-tag stripper. Direct reference preserves the
tag through `CURRENT_PLAY_REDIRECT_DOMAINS` and every downstream
consumer.
Downstream consumers audited; all transparent to `_AnsibleTaggedStr`
(it inherits from `str`):
- merge_mapping filter: content-based dict-key compare
- domain_mappings filter: takes `DOMAIN_PRIMARY` directly, no cast
- items2dict(key_name='source', value_name='source'): hashable
- generate_all_domains filter: `isinstance(item, str)` matches
- sys-stk-front-base `when: ... | length > 0`: only counts
- web-opt-rdr-domains -> tls lookup (the failing path): now templates
Coverage: new `test_term_with_unresolved_jinja_is_templated` in
tests/unit/plugins/lookup/test_tls.py verifies the lookup feeds its
first term through the templar. The 12 existing tls tests stay
green. `make test` green across all 5 targets.
Class follow-up (not addressed here): the
`| string` / `| map('string')` cast still strips `TrustedAsTemplate`
elsewhere if a future commit reintroduces it; 12 other lookup
plugins do not yet defensively template their args. A lint guard and
plugin-wide audit will come in separate PRs.

Removed leading `# filter_plugins/...py` / `# lookup_plugins/...py`
comments that referenced the old plugin paths. The plugins now live
under plugins/filter and plugins/lookup, so these headers are both
inaccurate and redundant.

Extends ``[tool.ruff.lint].select`` with six additional rule families:
``RUF`` (ruff-specific), ``SIM`` (flake8-simplify), ``C4``
(flake8-comprehensions), ``PERF`` (perflint), ``RET`` (flake8-return),
``PIE`` (flake8-pie). Adds ``RUF001/002/003`` to ``ignore`` because
those exist for homoglyph-attack detection, not English typography —
the project uses em/en-dashes and ``ℹ`` as a UI-hint glyph in CLI help
output deliberately.
Auto-fixed (~225, mechanical & behavior-preserving)
====================================================
- RUF005: ``a + [b]`` → ``[*a, b]``
- C408: ``dict(k=v)`` → ``{"k": v}``
- C420: ``dict.fromkeys(seq)`` shape simplifications
- SIM103/SIM110/SIM118: truthy-return / dict-key / dict-method
idiom simplifications
- RET504/RET505: drop unneeded final assigns / ``else`` after
``return``
- PIE810: combine ``str.startswith(a) or .startswith(b)``
into one call with a tuple
- RUF010: ``f"{str(x)}"`` → ``f"{x\!s}"``
- RUF100: removed unused ``# noqa`` directives that
became stale (mostly old ``# noqa: E402``
markers that ruff's smart E402 implementation
no longer flags after ``sys.path`` shims)
- RUF015 / RUF013 / RUF022 / RUF046 / RUF059: misc small wins
- I001: re-sorted import blocks where the new
imports above shifted them
Hand-fixed (~140, scripted where mechanical)
============================================
PERF401 (42): scripted AST rewrite of
``for x in iter: target.append(expr)`` (with optional ``if`` guard)
→ ``target.extend(expr for x in iter [if cond])``.
``list.extend(genexp)`` consumes the generator immediately, so the
rewrite is semantically equivalent to the original eager loop.
SIM117 (41): scripted AST combiner for nested ``with`` blocks where
the inner is the only statement of the outer (38 sites). The remaining
3 multi-line ``patch.object(...)`` chains were combined by hand using
the parenthesised ``with (\\n A,\\n B,\\n):`` form.
SIM102 (14): scripted AST combiner for nested ``if`` (10 sites). The
remaining 4 carry an inline ``# noqa: SIM102`` with rationale —
combining would either change semantics (the outer body has siblings
beyond the inner ``if``, e.g. ``cli/encrypt/inventory/__main__.py``
where ``encrypted_value = …`` runs regardless of ``ask_confirmation``)
or hurt readability (long literal whitelists).
RUF012 (9): annotated mutable class attributes with ``ClassVar[…]``
and added ``from typing import ClassVar``.
SIM105 (6): ``try/except: pass`` → ``with contextlib.suppress(…):``
with the necessary ``import contextlib`` added. Verified on
``utils/templating.py`` (3 occurrences in a ``finally`` block) —
cleanup behaviour is identical.
SIM115 (4): wrapped ``tempfile.NamedTemporaryFile(..., delete=False)``
call patterns in a ``with`` block; ``delete=False`` keeps the file
on disk after the block, so callers' ``return f.name`` still works.
PERF402, PERF403, B007, SIM108, SIM103: 5 misc fixes (loop→list-copy,
loop→dict-comprehension, unused-loop-var rename, ternary, return
expression).
Verification
============
- ``ruff check .`` → All checks passed
- ``ruff format --check .`` → 894 files already formatted
- 1621 unit tests → all pass
- Integration suite: 44 baseline failures, 1 skipped (unchanged)
- Sample-audited PERF401 rewrites in ``resolver.py``, ``inventory.py``,
``cache/files.py``, ``ressources/__main__.py``; SIM117 in
``test_main.py``; SIM105 in ``utils/templating.py``; SIM102 noqa
rationales in ``cli/encrypt/inventory/__main__.py``.
182 files changed, +993 / −960. With this and the prior strict-rule
commit the branch satisfies 11 ruff rule families end-to-end.

Adds ``[tool.ruff.lint]`` with ``select = ["E", "F", "I", "B", "UP"]``
and ``target-version = "py311"``. ``E501`` is ignored because
``ruff format`` already reflows what it can; the remaining long lines
are unsplittable string literals / URLs.
Auto-fixed (2753 issues, behavior-preserving):
- UP006/UP035: ``List[X]`` → ``list[X]``, ``Dict[X]`` → ``dict[X]``,
``from typing import …`` redirected where superseded by builtins.
- UP045: ``Optional[X]`` → ``X | None``.
- UP010/UP009/UP015: dropped Python-2-era pragmas (``from __future__
import absolute_import, division, print_function``,
``# -*- coding: utf-8 -*-``), redundant ``open(..., "r")`` mode.
- UP004: dropped implicit ``class X(object):``.
- UP022/UP008/UP032: stdlib idiom modernization (``capture_output``,
super-call simplification, etc.).
- B905: ``zip(...)`` → ``zip(..., strict=False)`` (preserves prior
behavior; switching to ``strict=True`` is a separate semantic
choice not made here).
- I001: import-block ordering.
Hand-fixed (66 issues):
- B904 × 54: appended ``from <bound>`` (when the enclosing ``except``
binds a name) or ``from None`` (when it doesn't) so chained
exceptions stay distinguishable from errors-during-exception-
handling. Applied via a small AST-aware script that walked back to
the enclosing ``except`` clause and matched the binding.
- B017 × 4: narrowed broad ``assertRaises(Exception)`` to the actual
``AnsibleError`` / ``AnsibleFilterError`` raised by the code under
test.
- B023 × 2: bound captured loop variables via default args
(``def _record(name, *, _path_real=path_real, ...)``) so each
closure gets its own snapshot.
- B007 × 2: unused loop control variables renamed to ``_`` /
rewritten to ``.values()``.
- UP007 × 2: ``Union[X, Y]`` → ``X | Y`` (plus dropping the now-unused
``from typing import Union``).
- B018 × 1: Odoo addon manifests are bare dict expressions at module
level by design — suppressed with an inline ``# noqa: B018`` and
rationale comment.
- UP031 × 1: printf-style format → f-string.
The 65 ``# noqa: …`` markers introduced by the auto-fixer all carry
real ruff codes (``B018``, ``E402``, ``F401``, etc.), so
``test_noqa_only_ruff_codes`` stays green.
Verification
============
- ``ruff check .`` → All checks passed
- ``ruff format --check .`` → 894 files already formatted
- ``tests.lint.repository.{test_project_root_import,
test_no_direct_yaml_calls, test_noqa_only_ruff_codes}`` and
``tests.unit.utils.annotations.test_suppress`` → 20 tests OK
- 1621 unit tests → all pass
- Integration suite: 44 failures (pre-existing baseline, none from
this change), 1 skipped.
Going forward, the new rules block regressions on E (style), F

The 934-line `utils/cache/data.py` monolith mixed cross-cutting helpers
(constants, yaml-loaders, deep-merge, signatures, render machinery)
with three independent domain caches (applications, users, domains).
Per the KISS/SPOT/DRY guidelines, split it along domain boundaries so
each file has a single, well-scoped responsibility:
utils/cache/__init__.py — package; owns _reset_cache_for_tests()
orchestrator
utils/cache/base.py — cross-cutting helpers: constants,
yaml-loaders, _deep_merge, cache-key +
content-fingerprint signatures, the
cross-domain re-entry guard, and the
templar-render machinery (the only
ansible-coupled symbol, lazy-imports
its dependency)
utils/cache/applications.py — variants + defaults +
get_merged_applications. Strictly
ansible-free at import time so the
GitHub Actions runner-host CLI path
(cli.deploy.development.init →
plan_dev_inventory_matrix →
get_variants) keeps working without
ansible installed
utils/cache/users.py — user defs, token store hydration,
alias materialization,
get_user_defaults, get_merged_users
utils/cache/domains.py — get_merged_domains, derived from the
merged applications view
utils/cache/data.py — DELETED. Façade is gone; the package
exports nothing the domain modules
don't already
Backward-compat: the facade was deleted (per operator request) and all
36+ consumers — 18 plugins, 2 CLI entry points, 9 test files, 4 doc
files, plus a role-internal lookup_plugin — were rewired to import
directly from the owning domain module. `_reset_cache_for_tests` is
now exposed at `from utils.cache import _reset_cache_for_tests`.
Tests added (per-module, focused):
tests/unit/utils/cache/test_base.py (31 cases)
tests/unit/utils/cache/test_applications.py ( 9 cases)
tests/unit/utils/cache/test_users_module.py (21 cases; suffix
disambiguates from
the existing
tests/unit/plugins/
lookup/test_users.py)
tests/unit/utils/cache/test_domains.py ( 6 cases)
The ansible-block invariants from CI runs 24934007615 and 24935979190
are now pinned via subprocess isolation: each ansible-less import test
spawns a fresh `python3 -c '…'` with a meta_path filter denying every
`ansible*` import and asserts the import + invocation succeed in that
clean process. The earlier in-process sys.modules-manipulation shims
fragmented module identity and broke under Python 3.13 inside the
infinito container; subprocess isolation has neither problem.
Doc-style audit (per docs/contributing/documentation.md):
- Removed em-dash from utils/cache/README.md (split into two
sentences)
- Updated stale `utils.runtime_data` reference in
docs/contributing/design/matrix-deploy.md
- Removed two SPOT self-declarations
(docs/agents/files/group_vars/applications.md and
docs/contributing/artefact/files/plugins/lookup/users.md) per
the documentation rule that SPOT status is conferred by
cross-links, not by the page asserting it about itself
Empirical proof:
- All four domain modules import without ansible (subprocess
isolation tests)
- get_variants(roles_dir=ROLES_DIR) returns 99 apps in the
ansible-blocked subprocess
- 142 cache tests + 1085 wider-suite tests pass; the only
remaining failures (test_host_vars free-function fixture bug,
test_runtime_performance timing flake) are pre-existing and
unrelated to this refactor (verified via `git stash`).

Both in-process cache layers — the cached YAML loader and the cached
runtime-data getters — now live next to each other under
`utils/cache/`. The package gains a README that documents the
"orthogonal layers, no third cache" rule so future contributors hit
the right primitive on the first look.
Moves:
- `utils/yaml_cache.py` -> `utils/cache/yaml.py`
- `utils/runtime_data.py` -> `utils/cache/data.py`
- `tests/unit/utils/test_yaml_cache.py` -> `tests/unit/utils/cache/test_yaml.py`
- `tests/unit/utils/test_runtime_data.py` -> `tests/unit/utils/cache/test_data.py`
- `tests/unit/utils/test_variants.py` -> `tests/unit/utils/cache/test_variants.py`
New:
- `utils/cache/__init__.py` (empty per project convention)
- `utils/cache/README.md` describing the two layers, when to reach for
which, lifetime, test-only helpers, and design guidelines (RFC 2119
keywords, emoji-after-headline, no self-SPOT declaration, no
slash-in-link-text).
- `tests/unit/utils/cache/__init__.py`
Mechanical updates:
- All imports across cli/, plugins/lookup/, tests/, and roles/ rewritten
from `utils.yaml_cache` -> `utils.cache.yaml` and
`utils.runtime_data` -> `utils.cache.data` (40+ files).
- `REPO_ROOT` parents-index in the moved tests bumped from `parents[3]`
to `parents[4]` to reflect the deeper nesting.
- Six broken markdown links in docs/ updated to the new module paths
(test_markdown_links lint test stays green).
- Two test files that used the `from utils import runtime_data` form
now use `from utils.cache import data as runtime_data` so the local
alias remains.
Tests: 848 passed across unit + lint suites (1 pre-existing collection
error in test_host_vars.py unrelated to this change).
Shorten the module name now that it backs more than just lookup plugins
(validator CLI, tests, dashboard role). Updates all 26 import sites and
adds a unit test covering the pure helpers.

Commit 9b5de4e47 removed the `domains` set_fact in 01_constructor.yml
and migrated only the `domain` lookup to get_merged_domains, leaving
`tls`, `cert`, `compose_file_args`, and the dashboard `docker_cards`
lookup still requiring variables['domains']. That caused
`tls_common: required variable 'domains' is missing` during the OIDC
merge task (first lookup('tls', ...) call at defaults_oidc render).
Also updates sys-svc-compose tasks/handlers so the CA-trust when-clauses
use `lookup('domains') | has_domain(application_id)` instead of the
removed top-level variable. Unit tests for the four lookups now patch
get_merged_domains to read from variables['domains'] so they stay
hermetic without touching the real roles/ tree.

Replaces inline `applications`/`users` merging with dedicated lookup
plugins and runtime hydration. Introduces `add_csp_hash` filter,
integrates sort into `find_dock_val_by_bkp_entr`, splits the Keycloak
one-shot realm import into `05a_realm_import_run.yml`, and fixes the
Mastodon administrator task YAML. Removes obsolete `csp_hashes` filter,
`sys-token-store` Jinja filter, and empty CLI setup modules.
