`lookup('tls', ...)` aligns a cross-app domain to the consumer named by
`application_id` (utils/tls_common.py `align_domain_to_consumer`): a
clearnet-primary consumer gets the clearnet sibling of an onion-primary
target. The carrier key does not cover `application_id`, so a park that
renders inside a role hands that role's alignment to every later role
whose key matches.
The constructor and `tasks/utils/setup/role.yml` park at play scope,
where `application_id` is undefined. The re-park in
`roles/sys-token-store/tasks/write.yml` (67f6c8d7e8) and the nested-load
re-park render inside the caller: `svc-prx-openresty` at the preload
loader, `web-app-stalwart` or a provider role on the NFS host, the web
app itself under `sys-stk-front-base`. In a tor deploy that turned onion
targets into clearnet domains for onion-primary roles served from such a
park, and baked the caller's group into Nextcloud's sociallogin
`groupMapping`.
Drop `application_id` from the render's variables and from the
templar's for the duration of the render, so every park carries the
play-scope result the constructor parks have always carried. Rename the
nested re-park task so its log lines do not read as a role boundary.

Job 116975298820 (Nextcloud#5, swarm, arch, btrfs, main 463df06202) hit
its budget (rc=124 after 20136 s). The app phase loads every service as a
nested `tasks/utils/load/app.yml` include under sys-service-loader, so
`tasks/utils/setup/role.yml` parks no carrier between `svc-virt-kata`
(L6073) and `update` (L38213). The only re-park in that stretch is the one
in `roles/sys-token-store/tasks/write.yml`, and Stalwart's user management
reaches it on the manager alone. After its last token write (L23574) the
manager carried the new key while both workers kept the old one and
rendered the full tree on every task: 85 non-wait tasks of 30 s or more, 63 min
from Keycloak (L25641) to the carry past `update` (L38237).
Park the carrier after every nested load on every host of the include.
A re-park whose key still matches serves the carried payload without
rendering.

Since 778c18fb23 the carrier key holds the tokens file's mtime and size.
sys-token-store changed that stat on every inclusion (00_core.yml
touched the file) and on every persisted token, and nothing re-parked a
carrier afterwards. Every later task's fresh worker then rendered the
applications SPOT cold, 30 to 80 s each. On main fea6f31d9f (run
38812964308) seven heavy jobs logged 194 to 287 such tasks and ran out
of the 20400 s budget; the same jobs before 778c18fb23 logged 65 to 83,
all of them real waits.
- 00_core.yml touches the store with modification_time and access_time
preserved, so it only creates a missing file. In swarm the controller
sees the store over NFS with attribute caching, and the touch alone
made the second pass go cold without any write.
- write.yml re-parks the carrier when the persist or the controller
mirror changed the store. Both run once, so every host that ran the
include gets the same verdict.
- tasks/utils/setup/role.yml re-parks after every role on every host,
so hosts that did not run the writing role recover too. Where the
key still matches this serves the carried payload; measured 0.1 s per
role in a local compose deploy.
- The tokens file enters the key as the SHA-256 of its content,
memoised per inode, mtime and size, so a touch no longer changes the
key. A stat that still matches serves the memo (1.67 us against
1.41 us for the old stat signature), and a stale stat keeps key and
YAML cache on the same old content instead of pairing new content
with an old key.
- applications_carrier opens the tokens file before it computes the
key, so on the NFS-mounted controller the parked key reflects the
revalidated attributes rather than a cached stat that changes a
minute later.

No conflicts across 121 incoming commits. The one file both sides changed is
tasks/stages/01_constructor.yml: upstream parks an applications carrier for
the swarm bootstrap roles after the add_host tasks, and keys the carrier on
the tokens file as well. This branch's mesh bootstrap opens and drops its own
block-scoped carrier before that point, so both keep working as written.
Upstream also brings ruff 0.17.0, distro-derived env keys, a scoped act outer
teardown, the stalwart relay rule, the onion apex redirect and image and
version updates; ruff 0.17 reformats nothing on this branch.
The constructor parked no applications carrier between the merge block
and the token store, so every lookup in the svc-swarm-node, svc-storage,
svc-registry and svc-virt bootstrap rendered the SPOT cold, 25 to 30 s
each on a loaded host.
A carrier there was unsafe: in swarm, svc-storage-nfs-server mounts the
NFS export over the controller's DIR_VAR_LIB, so the tokens file the
render reads can appear in the middle of that section, and the cache key
did not notice. merged_applications_cache_key now includes the tokens
file's path, mtime and size, as the users cache key already did, so a
carrier rejects itself once the tokens change. A carrier parked after
the add_host tasks then serves the bootstrap roles. It is parked only in
swarm mode: in compose the section runs in about a second, so a carrier
there would add a render without saving one.
In a swarm drill of web-app-prometheus up to the known NFS probe-write
failure, "Resolve the NFS server backend flavor" went from 29.6 s to
0.07 s, "Probe-mount the NFS export" from 26.4 s to 0.4 s, "Mount
cluster-shared infinito state on controller" from 23.7 s to 0.5 s and
"Ensure Docker-In-Docker DNS works" from 30.0 s to 3.6 s; the run to
that point took 768 s instead of 1735 s.

113113e553 parks the carrier after the token store, 165 lines below the merge
block, so each of the block's six tasks still renders the applications SPOT
cold in its own forked worker. Measured in CI run wp-swarm-tor2 they cost
323.51s in the PASS 1 main play, 180.39s in the backup play and 479.79s in
PASS 2.
The cost is the render, not the work. Two tasks in that block share the exact
construct `defaults_X | combine(X | default({}, true), recursive=True)`: design
takes 0.247s and service_provider 75.94s. The difference is that
defaults_service_provider is dense with lookup('config'/'users'/'domains'/'tls')
and every one of them lands in get_merged_applications.
The carrier cannot simply move up. get_merged_applications serves the carrier
fact whenever the key matches, and the carrier action goes through that same
path, so a second carrier task would be handed the first one's payload instead
of rendering. merged_applications_cache_key reads neither group_names nor the
token file, and with a real templar 71 of 265 applications differ by
group_names alone, so a carrier left standing across add_host or the token
store would be served where a fresh render belongs.
So the block opens its own carrier and drops it again at the end. Nothing
outside the block changes: every task from sys-version to the stage-wide
carrier renders exactly as before.
Placement follows measurement. A per-key perturbation test over the whole
265-application payload, with the credential regeneration noise floor
subtracted and every role in group_names, finds exactly two reads of the seven
facts the block sets:
.web-app-matomo.services.matomo.excluded_ips[0] <- networks
.web-app-wordpress.services.wordpress.title <- service_provider
networks is the block's first task and service_provider its last, which is why
the carrier opens after the one and is dropped before the other takes effect.
The block's tasks already render before service_provider is merged today, so
the frozen payload is what they would have rendered anyway.
The action gains a `clear` argument so the playbook never spells the private
fact name. Parking the carrier serves a payload in 0.000s against a 3.417s cold
render; a wrong key and a cleared fact both force the render again, which is
what makes the drop task work.
Worth roughly 806s of the 20199s job, against a floor of 673.6s.

Ansible forks a fresh worker process for every task, so the in-process
cache behind lookup('applications') was cold in every task. Each task that
touched the merged applications tree (config, domains, nginx, tls, cdn and
their callers) paid a full render: about 16 s on main and 21 to 23 s on this
branch, where ten more application roles carry MCP and AI Jinja. Measured on
the workspace jobs of run 33574056480 against the main run: 331 such tasks
(93 min, 39 % of the job) versus 391 (141 min, 43 %); the same unit is 9 to
43 % of every compose and swarm deploy job on disk. The parent process
rendered once per play, late, while templating a task name, and only the
tasks after that point ran warm.
The constructor now renders once through the new applications_carrier
action and parks the payload with its cache key in the host fact
_INFINITO_APPLICATIONS_RENDERED. Every later worker inherits the fact at
fork time and get_merged_applications serves it while the key (roles dir,
applications, users, DOMAIN_PRIMARY, SYSTEM_EMAIL_DOMAIN) still matches; a
mismatch falls back to the old render. The action masks its own result: the
payload is the whole tree with every credential, and CI runs with
MASK_CREDENTIALS_IN_LOGS false.
The task sits after the networks, design and service_provider merges, after
the add_host placements and after the token store. An independent review
showed that an earlier position bakes stale values into the play: the
web-app-wordpress title rendered to 'Blog by ' because service_provider did
not exist yet. User records inside the payload are the token store's state
at render time; readers of tokens captured later keep using lookup('users')
or lookup('config', app, 'users.…'), which read the users cache fresh.
Expected savings per job: about 130 min on a fork workspace run, 16 min on
an average compose deploy and 28 min on an average swarm deploy. The
constructor's own lookups before the carrier stay cold.

3529 invalid comments in 528 files, grandfathered in while the linter
only saw the working-tree diff. Removal ran through the linter's own
collectors, so detection and deletion cannot drift: a comment whose
opener line is blank before it and whose closer line is blank after it
loses all its lines, anything else loses only the comment region, and a
line left holding a bare delimiter goes with it.
Five files keep their comments behind a nocheck marker instead. Four are
upstream configs whose inline docs are upstream's own (mautrix, systemd
journald, nextcloud-oidc-login, MediaWiki). In littlejs the
commented-out entries ARE the deactivation mechanism for an example
tile, so deleting them would delete configuration.

A module that dies on an unhandled exception carries no msg: the AnsiballZ wrapper returns only failed and exception, whose event holds the sole account of what went wrong. The aggregation defaulted to the literal string package install failed and discarded it, so an AUR fetch that threw in run 30713666732 reported nothing at all and took a full investigation to place. Walk msg, exception.event.msg, exception, module_stderr, stderr instead, and tag every result with the module that produced it. This applies to apt, dnf, pacman and every other module the plugin drives, not only to the AUR.
The aur module fetches the RPC record and the snapshot tarball through bare open_url calls with no error handling, so one blip kills a deploy; distribution repositories need none of this because apt, dnf and pacman retry inside their own transport. Give the calls that reach an endpoint of their own a single shared policy. Only the AUR path is declared today; copr, ppa and build carry it against the day they are.
Split the result along its responsibilities so no file passes 250 lines: calls.py holds the vocabulary, sources.py one builder per acquisition path, plan.py only the dispatcher, outcome.py the reporting and facts.py the fact shapes. The action plugin is left with executing modules. Tests follow the code.

package_install read task_vars['ansible_facts'], which under delegate_to still describes the INVENTORY host. svc-storage-nfs-server delegates its controller-mount step to localhost, so a fedora node resolved the RedHat mapping and then ran `dnf install` on the Debian-family runner. Debian-only runs never showed it because node and runner shared os_family and apt happened to exist on both; fedora, centos and arch all hit it.
The delegation target is now asked directly with a minimal setup call, so the facts always describe the host the module runs on, and a failing gather names that host instead of silently falling back. _fact() normalises the two shapes, since task_vars carries bare keys while the setup module returns them ansible_-prefixed.

makepkg refuses to run as root, so the AUR plan marks its kewlfft.aur.aur
call with become_user=aur_builder. The action plugin honoured that by
mutating _play_context.become_user, which ansible-core never reads when
it escalates: the target user comes from the become plugin bound to the
connection, and _play_context mirrors that plugin rather than driving it.
The build therefore ran as root and makepkg aborted with rc 10.
Writing the plugin option instead flips only the AUR call to
-u aur_builder and restores the previous user afterwards, so the
bootstrap calls in the same plan keep running as root. Without a bound
become plugin the action now fails loud instead of silently building as
root.
The old test mocked _play_context and _execute_module, then asserted the
mocked attributes carried what the setter had just written, so it passed
against the broken code. It now builds a real sudo become plugin and
asserts on build_become_command output.

`ansible.builtin.package` has no module implementation. It is a documentation-only stub whose logic lives in Ansible's own action plugin, so `_execute_module` shipped that stub to the target and every deploy died at the first package install with "module (ansible.builtin.package) is missing interpreter line".
Resolve the generic marker to the host's `ansible_facts.pkg_mgr` before execution.

A role states which package it needs; the registry owns every distribution
mapping and every acquisition path. Declarations live in the repository-root
meta/packages.yml when more than one consumer installs them, and in a role's
own meta/packages.yml otherwise.
schema.py owns the declaration shape, registry.py finds and indexes the
declarations, plan.py turns a resolved spec into ordered module calls, and the
package_install action plugin only executes them. Keeping the plan pure makes
every acquisition path unit-testable without an Ansible connection:
distribution repositories, the AUR with its unprivileged build user, COPR, PPA,
an EPEL bootstrap package, the pacman multilib section and source builds.
The data is guarded by lints: a package id and a concrete distribution package
name each belong to exactly one declaration, a role installs only its own or
shared ids, every id resolves for all five default distributions with an
empty mapping justified by a nocheck, declarations read in ascending order,
every plan builds and names only whitelisted modules, and an external test
queries the real package indexes of all five distributions.
This commit adds the mechanism and the shared collection; no consumer uses it
yet.

Every compose.yml.j2 now declares services as '{{ service_name }}:' with
its '{% set %}' knobs on two-space lines above the key, includes at four
spaces and if/for tags aligned to the content they wrap. The layout
renders correctly because stack_host_template enables lstrip_blocks for
compose.yml.j2; indent(4, True) in the container base and '{%+' guards
in whitespace-sensitive scalars keep the shared fragments identical
under both render modes. A new lint test enforces the skeleton.

database_query is a module: it opens query_file on the host it runs on. In swarm the task is delegated to the stack host, which has no repo checkout at role_path, so query_file is not found. A new action plugin (same name auto-wraps the module) reads query_file on the controller and passes the SQL as 'query', so every role's query_file: works in both compose and swarm with no call-site changes. Reverts the per-call-site fider workaround in favour of this root fix, which also covers mattermost, odoo, openproject and pixelfed.

stack_host_copy is the copy: analogue of stack_host_template: it folds the IS_STACK_HOST gate into the module so callers do not silently fail on hosts whose destination tree is owned only by the stack host. In swarm an app's compose / build-context directory (/opt/compose/<app>) exists only on the manager, so a bare copy: into directories.instance also ran on workers and aborted the play with 'Destination directory does not exist'.
Migrate the six compose-dir copy tasks (baserow, jenkins, bookwyrm, postmarks, yourls, openldap) to stack_host_copy and drop the now-redundant when: IS_STACK_HOST. A new drift-guard lint test (test_stack_host_copy_migration) flags any future bare copy: into the compose dir, and a unit test covers the wrapper.

Ansible 2.19 introduced a `_trust_check` in the template engine that
silently returns Python-constructed strings unchanged when they lack the
TrustedAsTemplate tag (see ansible/_internal/_templating/_engine.py:288).
`self._templar.template("{{ IS_STACK_HOST | bool }}")` therefore returned
its own input every time, _to_bool rejected the literal, and every
nginx-tree conf_template task aborted on swarm-mgr-01.
Wrap the expression with `ansible.template.trust_as_template` before
handing it to the templar. Adds a unit test that uses `is_trusted_as_template`
to guard against future regressions that drop the tag.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.7 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The previous fix (`self._templar.available_variables = task_vars`) was
not enough in the Ansible version the swarm CI ran on: templar.template()
still returned the literal Jinja string and _to_bool rejected it. Build
a fresh Templar(loader, variables=task_vars) so the variable scope is
explicit and version-independent.
Also drop `| default(false)` from the gate expression. IS_STACK_HOST is
defined unconditionally in group_vars/all/18_swarm.yml; the default was
dead code that would silently mask a future regression where the SPOT
gets removed. Without it, an undefined IS_STACK_HOST raises loudly.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.7 <noreply@anthropic.com>
CI run 27044129926 failed every nginx-templating job with
"The value '{{ IS_STACK_HOST | default(false) | bool }}' is not a
valid boolean". Action plugins must explicitly expose task_vars to
their templar before calling template(); without it the renderer has
no variable scope and returns the Jinja string verbatim, which
_to_bool then rejects.
Sets self._templar.available_variables = task_vars in run(), matching
the standard pattern for action plugins that template against play
vars. Adds a unit test that holds the FakeTemplar's available_variables
mirror in place so any future regression that drops the seed call
fails the suite.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.7 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Adds plugins/action/conf_template.py, a drop-in `template:` replacement
that returns `skipped: true` whenever IS_STACK_HOST evaluates to false.
Routes the rendered Jinja through ansible.module_utils.parsing.convert_bool
so both Python bool and string "True"/"False" templar outputs resolve
correctly. Inherits every standard template module argument.
Migrates seven nginx-tree consumers that previously aborted on workers
with "Destination directory does not exist": sys-front-tls,
svc-db-openldap, sys-svc-webserver-core (nginx.conf + default_server.conf),
web-app-matrix (synapse vhost), web-app-peertube (per-domain vhost),
web-opt-rdr-domains (redirect vhost), and web-app-prometheus.
Tags twelve legitimate bare `template:` callers with
`# nocheck: conf-template`: per-host system configs (locale, nix, systemd
manager defaults, journald, msmtprc) and per-app compose-dir configs
(magento x2, mailu x2, moodle, odoo, taiga) that intentionally bypass the
project's nginx tree.
Adds tests/lint/ansible/modules/test_conf_template_migration.py as the
drift guard: any future `template:` task whose `src:` ends in `.conf.j2`
must adopt conf_template or carry the nocheck marker. Adds seven unit
tests for the plugin covering skip semantics, dispatch, mode defaults,
mode overrides, full-arg passthrough, and the string-bool templar path.

Adds six more rule families to the strict ruleset:
- ``T10`` — committed ``breakpoint()`` / ``pdb`` calls
- ``PGH`` — pygrep-hooks (blanket ``# type: ignore`` without code)
- ``EXE`` — shebang/executable-bit consistency
- ``RSE`` — ``raise X()`` style cleanups
- ``ICN`` — standard import aliases
- ``DTZ`` — tz-naive ``datetime`` bugs
Fixes (99 violations cleared)
=============================
EXE001 (68): every file with a Python shebang now has the executable
bit set. Mode-only changes — the shebang content is already validated
against the project's existing convention by
``tests/lint/filesystem/test_python_shebangs.py``
(``#\!/usr/bin/env python3`` for portable scripts,
``#\!/usr/bin/python`` for Ansible custom modules in ``library/``).
PGH003 (17): removed blanket ``# type: ignore`` markers. The project
doesn't run mypy/pyright in CI, so these were decoration only.
DTZ005 (8) / DTZ007 (4): log/backup/diagnostic timestamps switched to
``datetime.now(tz=timezone.utc)`` so cross-host log correlation
doesn't depend on each host's local TZ. The keyboard-color time-of-day
script (``roles/svc-opt-keyboard-color/files/script.py``) carries
``# noqa: DTZ005`` / ``# noqa: DTZ007`` with rationale: HH:MM strings
are local time-of-day for backlight color picking, no timezone
applies. The OpenSSL date parser in ``utils/cert_utils.py`` anchors
the parsed naive datetime to UTC explicitly via
``.replace(tzinfo=UTC)`` (openssl always emits the literal "GMT").
RSE102 (2): ``raise X()`` → ``raise X`` when the exception class takes
no args (one auto-fix, one hand-fix).
Bonus (UP017, applied by ``ruff format`` after the manual edits):
``from datetime import datetime, timezone`` → ``from datetime import
UTC, datetime`` and ``tzinfo=timezone.utc`` → ``tzinfo=UTC`` (Python
3.11+ shorthand).

86 files changed, +55 / −37 content lines, plus 68 mode-only changes
(``chmod +x``). Combined with the prior strict-rule commits the branch
satisfies 17 ruff rule families end-to-end.

Adds ``[tool.ruff.lint]`` with ``select = ["E", "F", "I", "B", "UP"]``
and ``target-version = "py311"``. ``E501`` is ignored because
``ruff format`` already reflows what it can; the remaining long lines
are unsplittable string literals / URLs.
Auto-fixed (2753 issues, behavior-preserving):
- UP006/UP035: ``List[X]`` → ``list[X]``, ``Dict[X]`` → ``dict[X]``,
``from typing import …`` redirected where superseded by builtins.
- UP045: ``Optional[X]`` → ``X | None``.
- UP010/UP009/UP015: dropped Python-2-era pragmas (``from __future__
import absolute_import, division, print_function``,
``# -*- coding: utf-8 -*-``), redundant ``open(..., "r")`` mode.
- UP004: dropped implicit ``class X(object):``.
- UP022/UP008/UP032: stdlib idiom modernization (``capture_output``,
super-call simplification, etc.).
- B905: ``zip(...)`` → ``zip(..., strict=False)`` (preserves prior
behavior; switching to ``strict=True`` is a separate semantic
choice not made here).
- I001: import-block ordering.
Hand-fixed (66 issues):
- B904 × 54: appended ``from <bound>`` (when the enclosing ``except``
binds a name) or ``from None`` (when it doesn't) so chained
exceptions stay distinguishable from errors-during-exception-
handling. Applied via a small AST-aware script that walked back to
the enclosing ``except`` clause and matched the binding.
- B017 × 4: narrowed broad ``assertRaises(Exception)`` to the actual
``AnsibleError`` / ``AnsibleFilterError`` raised by the code under
test.
- B023 × 2: bound captured loop variables via default args
(``def _record(name, *, _path_real=path_real, ...)``) so each
closure gets its own snapshot.
- B007 × 2: unused loop control variables renamed to ``_`` /
rewritten to ``.values()``.
- UP007 × 2: ``Union[X, Y]`` → ``X | Y`` (plus dropping the now-unused
``from typing import Union``).
- B018 × 1: Odoo addon manifests are bare dict expressions at module
level by design — suppressed with an inline ``# noqa: B018`` and
rationale comment.
- UP031 × 1: printf-style format → f-string.
The 65 ``# noqa: …`` markers introduced by the auto-fixer all carry
real ruff codes (``B018``, ``E402``, ``F401``, etc.), so
``test_noqa_only_ruff_codes`` stays green.
